the idea is that the dvd distributors can control how and when they distribute films to various markets; they don't want some films to come out too soon here, etc..

I asked because I just put a DVD in my Mac for the first time and the option of choosig region came up. But the thing is that you can change that 5 times and then it becomes permanently locked on the last one.
Now what's the fucking use of that?

don't worry about the 5 changes thing. there are apps that will read any dvd. vlc is one if i'm not wrong. or just google for a firmware update that will unblock your player for ever. even simpler: i unblocked my stand alone dvd player with just a remote control key combination. most players are standard and the block is in software not in hardware.
