I know that Cobain listened and liked the Pixies, but I defy you to show me anything in a Nirvana song that sounds anything like a Pixies song. I don't hear one damn thing. To me, Nirvana sounds like earl Replacements.

Not so much the melodies as the use of dynamics. Meaning quiet parts of songs followed by really loud parts followed by quiet parts. A lot of songs on Nevermind had quiet verse, followed by loud chorus with distorted guitars, back into quiet verse. Then think about certain Pixies songs "Tame","All over the World" etc. Similar in songwriting.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is a clear rip-off of U-Mass (Chorus Riff)....this is pretty much agreed upon by most people in the Forum and many others.

They can agree on that, but they are wrong. Nirvana is more steeped in hard rock of the 1980s. The Pixies were more "new wave" influence, kind of like The Cars on acid.

I think 'Rock Music' could fit on 'In Utero'.

Don't get me wrong, the best 'In Utero' track is at least 10 times worst than 'Rock Music'. And yeah, Nevermind has a Pixiesque reminiscence.

Here's a good time to laugh at the many who agree with this.

Nevermind (where "Smells Like Teen Spirit" can be found, of course) was released on September 24, 1991. And I believe a much earlier version is found on that box set that came out last year.

The Pixies' Trompe le Monde (where "U-Mass" can be found) was released on October 8, 1991.

I did not know that. Can you point to any documentation of this?

Not for the sake of an argument, but just for my own curiousity.

Unless you're kidding.

I was kidding, but the point is, you cant say that the release date of albums has anything to do with it (especially when the dates are so close together, and the Pixies really did have a tendency to play new song long before they were released, Frank Black did this also)

I think all the stuff Nirvana's most known for (the power-pop, screamy, quiet/loud stuff, not the Sabbath-riffing stuff that's on all of their studio albums but Nevermind) sounds like a pale imitation of the Pixies. Cobain never had the songwriting chops to match Frank, but he tried. For example, "On a Plain" or "Breed." I can hear it in the melodic structure and especially the arrangements on these really clearly. Also, "Tourettes" always reminded me nonspecifically of the Pixies. I mean, it's just a wild, loose punk song, but the way Cobain does the vocals is a dead-on Frank imitation. And I think "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the most obvious example. I mean, if you don't hear it there, you won't hear it anywhere.

Smells like teen spirit sort of has a recemblance to Debaser, guitar rythm-wise.

Smells Like Teen Spirit, in terms of song structure, parallels "gigantic". Quiet verse, builds up in the pre-chorus, and a great big loud chorus.

Melody is similar as well. "Hey paul, hey paul, hey paul" is kind of like "hello, hello, hello".

It really does not matter to me, though. Nevermind is a great album. As are all the Pixies albums.

Some of the songs on Nevermind and In Utero have a bit of a Pixies flavour, not really Bleach though; apart from the odd dynamic chord stucture, it's very 70's sludge-grunge-I remember KC talking about how he went in that direction because they were signed to Sub Pop, or something!

I kinda think the PIXIES sound like the effect acid would have on cars...corrosive, cancerous, and mesmerizing.

..kurt cobain said himself that smells like teen spirit was a pixies rip off..most of us seem to agree that it sounds like u-mass/debaser (including me) and some of us agree that it sounds like "more than a feeling" (which i agree with aswell) but if you read the interview with kurt about the practice where they wrote the song then they even admit too having ripped off the pixies....

i do thik some nirvana songs sound a lot like the pixies but nirvavan have a lot of depressive stuff too...(a lot of depressive stuff)

i think only the more comercialised of songs (the stuff on the best of) sound pixie-ish...if you listen to songs like "hard long now" (is that what its called; i keep on forgetting) then its a completely different nirvana

but thats only my opinion

Check out the Pixies cover of "Wild Honey Pie" by the Beatles and you could probably see the resemblance in Cobain/Thompson's voice. At least I think of Cobain when I hear it, or at least the Thompson influence in his screaming.
