BLT is a sig sophisticate. I love his many-layered approach to the legend of the Gunn, and his tribute to the immortality ring, and its effects on "skin" and "meat".

Really Mike, you're stepping out of line knocking Joy Division. That band is far better than most people realise or appreciate. Interpol are good, but they're not up to the level of Joy Division.
I miss all the Cult Of... signatures. I still like my "I have joined the cult of frank/and I am not afraid" one, but there were many fine examples. I do pine for the Gunn as well.

Is calling them very good but overrated knocking them? I'm not sure it is.
Thanks for the reminder Jon, I may go back to that one, seeing as I need one. I still haven't worked out how you get that line that divides it from the rest of your post though. How do you do it? |

I think they're pretty similar and I base this solely on the fact that not having heard them (until recently) but loving Interpol, our band had been told many times that we sound like Joy Division. Which could only be via Interpol, really.
Now that I've heard JD, I do love 'em, but I think it's a little too fashionable to bash the new guys.

Yup and it's bitter old people and music snobs that do it. I hate it.
As for Joy Division, I just think they needed to produce more to be recognised as one of the true greats. Unfortuntate circumstances as to why they didn't I know, but that doesn't detract from the fact that they didn't produce enough material to be considered true greats for me.
I agree that they are a seminal band though. And very very good. It's just some people consider them to be the most important band ever, hence the overrated tag. |

If Nirvana was still around, making progressivly shittier records while Kurt battled addiction and a psycho wife, history would probably not remember them quite so fondly. Hell, if Bono had killed himself after Joshua Tree, I bet U2 would be considered one of the most important bands of our generation, and everyone would wonder what could have been.... |

I think its OK to be a music snob. For example, if I didn't think I had the best music taste in the world, then I would have someone else's music taste, if you see what I mean.
On the Interpol vs Joy Division thing, I like Interpol very much - there're some tremendous moments on both their albums, but in my view Joy Division produced two approaching-flawless albums in the same space of time.
I have no objection to bands basing their sound on other bands, I just thing Joy Division are significantly superior in a purely opinionated, subjective way.

By the way, any one else think (like me) that they don't even really sound like each other that much (except perhaps a similarity in the lead singer's voice) anyway?
And by the way, I read an interview in the Manchester Evening News with their lead singer Paul Bannks, just before they were gonna play a show here, and he had only just found out about Joy Division recently, and certainly did not site them as an influence at all. It's just other people making assumptions 'cos his voice sounds similar. Joy Division were more punky and Interpol are more epic and melodic I'd say. |

How dare you speedy to talk like that about JD, they were amazing, but they were also ahead of their time. I also like Interpol, but they never will be anything like the Great JD!
Ian Curtis was something...Kurt Cobain is nothing for me comparing to him.
