I'm going to Boston next week. 17th-20th to visit some friends who go to Northeastern. It's my third time visiting them and I haven't really seen much of the city before when I went. I was curious if there is anything you guys suggest I should do or see while I'm there. Also, I know I'm not the most vocal person on the forum but if there are any forum members who reside in Boston and want to meet up for an oldschool fb.net sequential picture thread i'd be more than happy to. I assure you I'm not a serial killer.

go see fanueil hall and eat some pastry in there--it's pretty good (and an easy ride on the T)
a trip to fenway wouldn't hurt ya none.
go eat at an irish pub...there are lots of old ones down by faneuil...just ask the locals. good beers.
you'll be there for st patrick's day--you BETTER have some green beer!
have fun and post back when you get back. (and get sober) |

I live in Boston so listen to me.
DON'T go to Fenway unless you've got a ticket to see a game. Otherwise, that area has little to offer but vacant sport's bars. You've probably seen it anyhow seeing that you've been visiting NorthEastern.
Fanueil Hall is the cheesiest tourist site in Boston. There's nothing much there except a big food court and some stores. It's basically an outdoor mall with a few historical statues here and there.
There are a lot of good irish pubs around, but you'll probably get lost trying to find them unless you figure it out before hand.
I'd recommend a trip to the MFA especially if you like Impressionism and/or Asian art. If you're a Modern Art fan, you'll be disappointed unless there's a specific exhibit.
Go record shopping on Newbury Street. Newbury Comics is the best damn record store, but there's also a nice used CD place and for your corporate music needs and gianormous Virgin Megastore. Walk all the way east to the Boston Common. You can stay on Newbury St if you like galleries and boutiques, walk down Boylston St if you like more upscale places, or walk over to the Charles River park if you want a more vista view of the city. The Boston Common is nice and there are a lot of interesting places nearby such as Chinatown, the Theater District, The Freedom Trail, Cheers, and yes, Fanueil Hall. You can even walk to the ocean and visit the aquarium or Imax theater.
A trip to Harvard Square in Cambridge on a Friday night can be fun. Lots of freaky people and sometimes some street performers and such.
I'd actually lay low on St Pat's unless you know what to expect. Boston is usually out of control on St Pats.
That's my two cents. Basically, Boston is best seen by foot. If you have more specifics like what's the best place to get sushi or whatever, just ask. Hopefully this fucking snow will be gone by the 17th.
Will I ever reach 1000?

I spent about a month there about 10 or 12 years ago...whenever Rose Kennedy died...i was in Boston then..flags all flyin half mast.
You have to to see the old North Church and Paul Revere's house and walk around those old streets and alleys. Athiest is of course your best guide so far, but i just wanted to chime in and say that I'd been there.
You might check out the Harper's Ferry bar in Allston if you dig anything even remotely bluesy...but it is rather commercial. I didn't do much else while i was there. I ate in some nasty little joint over in Quincy once - lady (nasty old bitty) gave me three early 40's quarters as part of my change. I still have them. I went in another place call The Yardrock Cafe but didn't stay long. Also Quincy? Can't remember.
Listen to the Emerson College radio station - 88.9? Great stuff. I'd like to go back some day.
Oh - I also did some recording at Berklee a few years ago. That was fun.
Boston's cool.
What was i doing there? I was in Dunkin Donuts University.

Yeah. In Braintree.
I shit you not. One of my college jobs rented me a car ang gave me an expense account and I spent a month in Boston (sort of) learning how to make da donitz.
There were guys there that took the making of donuts entirely too seriously. |

First off, congrats on making a trip to the town where Frank was born.
May I second what Atheist4Catholics advised? I've spent some time in Bean Town and you do not want to go to Faneuil Hall or Fenway when there's no game.
Newbury Street. Two thumbs-up. Newbury Comics a definite stop. Ditto the Boston Common. Ditto Harvard Square. The Coop is a good place if you wanna meander indoors and look at books and such.
It shouldn't be too difficult for you to have a great time; staying away from drunken throngs on St. Pat's is another story.

Wasn't Chuck born in San Diego, floop?
I seem to remember San Diego or environs being determined to be the birthplace of Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV. |

Harvard Sq is cool. Although it is in Cambridge. There are a lot of good record stores there.
I like the Newbury Street area and the Back Bay in general. And Boston Common is pretty.

Stop with the naughty nurse fantasy and focus, floop! Focus! This is serious business. We are going to settle this once and for all. It's Allston. Have you not bought FBF or at least read the liner notes?
We will meet you at dawn in the woods behind the golf course. Be prepared. We will have the pistols.

kathryn, do you know how many times he's shown me that picture? at least 6 times. i'm immune to outrage when it comes that outfit. very impractical. she has nice hair, though.
