What do you think are the best recorded live shows of Frank Black solo or Frank w/ the Catholics? I'm listening to a copy of Frank solo at the Prinzenbar in Hamburg Germany and the quality is great. The setlist is very good too. So factoring in quality of recording, setlist, band banter and everything else what are like the top 10 best circulated live shows out there?

I have that show, UYN, and I understand why you rate it so highly.
FB+TheCs, off the top of my spaced-out head:
I've been impressed, recently, by the 3/28/3 Back Door, Chicago show.
I also like the 7/15/99 Higher Ground, Winooski show is also good -- good quality and song selection plus Frank talks before just about every song, which is a treat.
And Shepherd's Bush just slays. The quality, songs, etc. are all superior, methinks.
Can't think of solo stuff at the moment, but it will come to me.
Good question.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Catholics |

From the bootlegger's mouth :
June 8 1993 is gold. June 24 1993 is awesome. June 14 1996 is short but very sweet. July 18 1999 is damn fine. Feb 20 2000 is a must hear. Jan 30 2001 was the first FB concert i ever heard so i absolutely love it. March 1 2001 is an FM broadcast that is very tight. Aug 24 2001 is another FM that is complete respect. Nov 19 2002 is the best 'recent' show ive got.

I think the April 4 2003 recorded in Regina, Sask by the CBC is terrific! In fact, a few tracks were put on the Nadine EP.
They didn't release the covers he did (Black Rider, Sister Isabelle, ____), but the setlist of the recording is:
1. BLD 2. All My Ghosts 3. Cactus 4. Hermaphroditos 5. WIMM 6. Bullet 7. Southbound Bevy 8. Mr Grieves 9. Robert Onion 10. New House of the Pope 11. Horrible Day 12. Headache 13. Nimrod's Son 14. California Bound 15. Sir Rockaby 16. Jane the Queen of Love 17. Gouge Away 18. Freedom Rock 19. How You Went So Far 20. Crackity Jones 21. I Want Rock & Roll 22. Monkey Gone To Heaven 23. Massif Centrale 24. Nadine 25. Cold Heart of Stone 26. Los Angeles
Honorable mentions to Slims Concert that same year which featured FB solo, with EDF, and then full band; 1993 Electric Ladyland for that awesome cover of One Step Beyond with Joseph Alberto Santiago and EDF; and there's one other which I can't remember.

I particularly enjoy the May 16, 2001, Protland, OR, recording. The band sounds great, the quality is great, and there's some great, rare covers, such as "Dirty Old Town," "John the Revelator," and "Some Things."

I love the Back Door show too although when Frank screams THANK YOOOU at the end, it is a little scary. I think my favorite live recording is Frank solo in May 2003, but mostly because it captures my own interaction with him and his saying "she's with me" about me! It thrills me every time. I am easily amused...

Bug Jar rochester is awesome - love the calistan on that
Pixies radio show in Boston just after recording COP is just amazing
Frank Black live in Camden barfly where he starts with "hard to make things out" is beautiful. Amazing version of this song and perosnally i think much better than the pistolero version.
FB+C's from Slims is pretty cool too. |
