In France, when they published their first album that I bought, that I enjoyed, journalists from Les Inrockuptibles (former music magazine turned into left wing reactionnaires propaganda paper of NOTHINGNESS), said of placebo, that they would be the next U2.
They were right...

I would say they are no where near as bad as U2. Placebo had 3 good albums, 2 of them really bloody good.
I love placebo. They were one of those first bands that i started getting really into. Got me through teenage angst and all that stuff. I have every single singe they ever released, with some really cool bsides on them.
They are good live aswell. Ive seen them twice, and both times was really good., Great stage performers. Yeah okj, so brian may be a bit....odd. But he makes music that hundreds of teenagers nad adults alike can relate too. PLus they are great to dance too.

I hate them, that voice ruins my years...
Sorry to say, but for me they are much worst than the U2!

Every song sounds the same. Even worse than U2. |

Right... I did like a lot the first album. There was something. Songs like Nacy Boy, 36 degree, I know, were more than honest tunes for a first albums. The B-side "Then the cloud will open for me' blew me away.... Then came the second. More or less the same texture as the first, good tunes too, but not as many as the first... Sweet price and Mother earth stuff.. though it bears so many similitude with the sound of earleier songs. Ok waiting without frenzy for the third. It generaly never fails to show if a career is to be or not. I heard it. A mere parody of their style. all the songs sounded the same. The same tone in the voice, the same inflection, almost the same chords. No real good song like Nancy Boy, nothing catchy.
The Fourth album is purely unbearable. They simply killed their style . Moreover their affects on stage is just NOT NICE.
Born dead band to my opinion... though very alive.

Ok, i agree with soe aspects of that, Self titled firt album is really good. Second album, hmm, can see what you mean, there are some songs which sound simialr...but theres good stuff such as Pure Morning, With Out You IM Nothing, The Crawl...many more.
Third album, took some getting used to. I hated it at first, but a few of the songs really grew on me. Like Heamoglobin, and a couple others.
The last album, havent listened to properly, but what i have i ound to be boring and dreary. I didnt like that fact they re released all their singles again, that was pointless. But i did enjoy the gig of 'once again, with more feeling'.

The second album was good - a heady mix of Sonic Youth, Bowie and the Pixies.
Listen to "You Don't Care About Us" and tell me that ain't a fine song.
Not everyone all at once though please ;)

I'm with Rita on this one. His voice is one of the horrible sounds to ever escape a human mouth. I haven't listend to any of their albums, I've just heard their singles, but just can't listen to that man sing. |

To paraphrase someone else:
"It was the best of times, it was Placebo"
"Some of us were born in the gutter, but do we have to be reminded by Placebo?"
"Join the Cult of Frank / Seriously." |

Glad to hear that Mike, I can't listen to his voice...it makes me sick!

Black Market Music is a good album. Half of Placebo's songs are good (The other half is pretty bad). A few are really good (heamoglobin, ...) Brian Molko is a dick, though. And I would love to hear a solo album by Stefan Olsdal. |

I wa very suspicious of them at first(as in they seemed at bit fake-o and annoying), but a friend of mind started getting into them, and I have to say, they have some great songs. 'Slave To The Wage'(the one with the Pavement sample)is great. |

thats a nasty thing to compare placebo to U2, Placebo always delight me, they are bloody good live and their albums consistantly good. U2 are and will always be shit liked by nans and people who think alternative music is oasis and kasabian.

I bet U2 play their instruments even better than Placebo actually, so the only way they are gonna be better is if you already prefer their songs. They certainly won't put on a show as much as U2, that's for sure.
To be honest with you, I am not even sure why we are discussing both bands on this forum. There are so many better bands to be spending our time on. |

PLACEBO TO PLAY ONE OFF THEATRE SHOW Placebo
Brian Molko's band also cover Pixies on new iTunes covers LP
Placebo have announced that they will play a one-off show at London's Coronet Theatre next month.
The intimate show on March 7 will be a warm-up for the band's massive South American tour which begins mid-March.
The same week as the special show, the band will also be re-releasing ten rare cover versions as an iTunes download album. The tracks were previously only available as a bonus disc with 2003's album "Sleeping With Ghosts."
"Covers" includes a version of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" and Pixies' sublime "Where Is My Mind."
Other tracks include Placebo-ised versions of T-Rex's "20th Century Boy," Moz's "Bigmouth Strikes Again."
Tickets for the Coronet warm-up went on sale this morning, priced £25.
