Well, besides the reunited Slint that is.

Verktum
http://www.velocityweekly.com/2004/1006/sound/rock_town.html

Some free mp3s for the taking:

Face Walk
Oh Canada
Yo-Knight

Just found out they're opening for Slint in Chicago. Spudboy used to play with one of these guys, the universe, she is strange some days. I heartily recommend you check em out. Good chunky hooky bass and guitars and energetic as hell. I hope you like em at least as much as I do.

Tell us your own newly discovered band!
If they're local to you or from your hometown, even better. I love supporting a local scene.

Thanks I'll check them out. I am suprised you didn't save this for the New Favourite Band game though. Or couldn't you wait that long?

nope. oops! I'm impulsive sometimes. Especially when it comes to things like this. I made this recommendation on just the first track, it was that good.

The second track has a Jesus Lizard feel to it, except for it's got serious funk. Man. mmmMM!

I just listened to the first track and it is bloody brilliant. Thanks for this. They sound foreign to me in their style, perhaps South American.

EDIT: Excuse the French but this is fucking excellent. Thanks again Apl, just the third track left now. This second track is like Stevie Wonder meets the Pixies.

Geez, I just listened to the first thirty seconds of the first song, and this big grin came over my face. Cool stuff Apl. Thanks a bunch.

I have a couple of songs from a local band that I love. How did you post those direct song links Apl?

My pleasure you guys. Sweetens the cake to know you like it too.

Apparently they only have a 5-track EP so far. I hope opening for Slint in March gives them some really good exposure. They definitely deserve it. I can't even imagine how great seeing them live will be.

Homers - they were from that Velocity Weekly article I linked up there. I just got the link properties for the mp3s they had listed, and copied em over. Where are your mp3s? Do you have a myspace.com or similar-type free website? Email me if ya want to figure something out. :)

Thanks Apl, you have reminded me of my YouSendIt link. This is a local band called Nine Black Alps. I have seen them 4 times locally now, including a house party (a few doors down from BumbleBeeBoy2's flat actually) that ended up getting reviewed in NME. This song is called Cosmopolitan.

Homers, I finally got a chance to listen to the Nine Black Alps this morning. It's not bad, but I think my 4 months' daily hanging in pubs and clubs in 1994 Sunderland, hearing Blur and Oasis ad nauseum from the jukebox, must've burned my Brit-pop appreciation neural pathways into little ashen cinders. Hell, I can't get into most of the indie-pop here either, so it's definitely not a case of favoritism. Probably more a case of me just being an old coot. Darn whippersnappers and their new-fangled music.

I tried to watch the video but I don't want to register for NME to do it.

I can certainly see why they're hitting it big though. Good on em. :)

Pretense- 4 months of schoolin'. Sunderland University cum Polytechnic (or was that vice versa?). Art school.

Reality- dodging locals' bricks and pipes to the international students' heads. Feezing my ass off in the North Sea wind, and getting soused every day at the pub (a block away from the dorms) by around 2 PM.

Ya know, when in Rome...

Actually, it wasn't that bad. Just wish I had had more money, to travel. and eat.

Yeah to travel away from Sunderland. Actually I have never been, and I hear it's not too bad. One of my favourite new bands, The Futureheads, come from there. Good to hear them sing in their local accents. I am sure they weren't the ones throwing bricks and pipes at your head.

hehe, no doubt. The accents of the older generation locals were impossible to fathom, but damn if they weren't friendly wonderful people. I actually loved it there.

I actually didn't get accosted there. but knew of some international students that were sent to the ER (or whatever it's called there) with massive head contusions. One guy even went into a coma. No idea how that turned out. The overall feeling for me was sympathy/empathy for a town that lived and died for industry. Very high unemployment, and a fog of ghost town about it. Very glad to see a band from there making it. Saw them (the Futureheads) on Conan and was impressed by their 4-part harmonies. It was almost old school. :)

I found Verktum's EP...and discovered their brand new full-length CD! (not sure of the title, I think it's "2"? -I bought it w/out asking).

It's available over the phone from ear X-tacy in Louisville, KY. I searched their online store and it didn't show up, so I called and - voila!

If you're interested in either one, here's the contact info:

It's not in their online store, Homie, only in-store. sheesh! doesn't anyone read what I write anymore? kidding, kidding ;) If ya like I can work out something where I call em and order on your behalf. Or easier still, when I get the discs I'll let you know and I can send you some...files.

Then hopefully they'll be getting a better distribution once they open for Slint later this month, and you can get em then. They're sure to get a great response.

yeah, I should made it a little more clear there.

I just got the Verktum cd on my front porch. Importing now, and loving it so far.

funny note, one of the songs is titled "My Morning Jackoff". hehe

"We'll obviously have to make a movie. This will mushroom or mutate -- either way -- into a real craze. And given the mood of this country, being that a lot of people in the mood to play golf are also in the mood to shoot something, I think it would take off like a gigantic fad."

Can you share an mp3 floop?
I liked the one you included on your mix ("Everyday"). A lot. Reminds me of Papa M some.

Funny, I thought of you and Dios a little while ago, somehow I had a feeling you would post it.

Really? Wow, that's cool floop. I LOVE this band ever since I saw them support the Shins/Stills tour last year. What a great gig that was. I'll post the whole album if you like Apl.

everytime i've seen them the lead singer has 3 or 4 coronas on his keyboard at the beginning of the show. i admire that kind of planning ahead

I was just listening to the album again last night. Definitely one of the very best from last year. They should have some new songs to play I would imagine. I can't wait 'til they return to Manchester.
