Another gem. The way The Man sings it; McDave belting out "Heloise" in the background; the darkness of the mood; the song's historical basis....the whole thing works.

| Sorry, FB's Heloise has nothing to do with Rousseau's novel. It's about the tragic love between the famous philosopher Pierre Abelard and his only female student, in medieval France. |

Sister Isabelle rocks too! And is the first thing I thought of
when I first heard Heloise. Frank's two nun-related songs bring to mind
the Clash line "he who fucks nuns will later join the church." But I so digress.
Jop, I don't recall that about the excellent film Being John Malkovich
but I do know that Froggie knows of what he speaks when he mentions
the story of Heloise and Abelard. I have always assumed that's what the song is
she's the protagonist of the song. Perhaps Frank will put down that diaper
and post and enlighten us, but I think that's what that song's about.
Lastly, I have tried and tried to find the original Sister Isabelle. Anybody
else manage to locate it?

I love this song. Heloise kept popping up for me everywhere, like other people have said in Being John Malkovich and in the Sopranos. When I first heard it it reminded me of old Church scandles and abuses like the Magdelene Laundies in Ireland, even though I know it's about something pretty different now.

about this song whenever I read about yet another
sex-abuse case in the Catholic Church. "Welcome
to your new joy...down here serving the priests." Frank
cannot be accused of avoiding The Dark Things In Life.

I think it was a puppet show based on Heloise and Abelard that John Cusack's character was performing at the beginning of the movie, right?

I couldn't agree more, Kathryn. There is something about the way The Man sings it. Something so compelling in his voice, as if he is a conduit for the pain and injustice heaped upon Heloise and her soul mate and lover.
You can hear this same something in a lot of Frank's tragic love songs, but for some reason the one this most reminds me of is "How You Went So Far" I think the part that I really find similar is when he sings "I don't know how you went so farrrrrrrrr" at the end, and on "Heloise" when he sings for the last time "They sent you far away, they took your only boy.........Heloooiiiissseee" (Although, I must say that while I've been writing this post I've listened to the two songs back to back 3-4 times and I find Frank's vocals a little more sad and compelling on "How you went so far", but I think that is probably because I can relate to the lyrics somewhat in that song, while I haven't experienced anything remotely similar to the fate of Heloise)
Heloise is definitely another gem! |

OldMan, you are so right. And I hate to analyze songs
and, worse, to try to project what Frank's mood/meaning/
emotional life was like at the time...but....that said...
the passion/desperation/voice with which he sings
"Heloise" feels to me a part of the "I am divorcing"
songs. Lastly, I probably have no fucking idea what
I am talking about here.

The best on Devil's Workshop. DW is 10 times better than BLD in my opinion...DW is almost an antithesis to DITS, or a mirror-mirror version. Im being vague and can't quite formulate what I'm trying to say, but DW is like an evil twin to DITS. Whatever. Can anyone help me out here? Example: San Antonio, Tx is a frenzied and off-kilter companion piece to Llano del Rio. Ok. I have a high fever by the way.
