Yes it was harash and I apallogize.
The Pogues were a very 80's thing.
Shane had a punk band before the Pogues...he said once that he moved to traditional Irish music because punk had "petered out" in the late 70's.
The schtick - thing about the pogues is that it is so very euro to be out of your mind drunk in a pub going completely to pieces over some 500 year old song about somebody's dead wife...or roving around looking for a pair of brown eyes you vaguely remember seeing at some point during a blacked-out drunken episode...or crying because you're toasting to JFK on Broadway in NYC at 7 am after having been up all night drinking and being very, VERY Irish.
For those that have trouble with obvious and open expression of emotion in music *cough*, the pogues may seem a bit cheesy.
A lot of the music seems to come from that place where you are so drunk on brown liquor that you feel like shouting and screaming at the stars and that you can't start crying because if you start you just might not be able to stop.
My theory is that Shane writes (wrote?) in this condition.
If you've never been on a crying, wall punching whiskey drunk, then the Pogues' music may seem a bit...empty.
I can see the connections between traditional Irish music and American "Old Time" music, so it hits home on another level for me as well.
Where the Irish got drunk and cried and fought each other, the Americans got drunk and danced...or passed out in a ditch...or both...or all four.

i've heard maybe one or two Pogues songs i liked but the rest all sound the same to me. and what they sound like is not my thing
also, i worked on a project once that had a Pogues song that i had to hear about a zillion times. i think that contributed to my attitude

floop, baby, I think you're vacuous and harash, but it's more of a general opinion than anything based on musical taste. For example, I love the Pogues to bits, but I've never heard Wilco, and they don't look particularly exciting to me.
