Merge Records website is streaming M Ward's new album (here: http://www.mergerecords.com/jukeboxes/mward/mw_jukebox.html). I'd never heard any of his music before, but I've been listening to this non-stop all day. It's just bloody amazing good. I'd try an describe it, but whenever I try to describe music, I fail miserably. So give it a spin. Anyone know about this dude?

You're mui welcome Mike (if we go around calling each 'Mike' all the time, would that be really annoying?). I think I might have to buy this record. Normally, the thought of some acoustic guitars and some mellow singing would bore me to tears, but this is so good. His voice (and style) at times remind me of Louis Armstrong. The feel of the music in general is quite "old timey", but not in a retro-chic sort of way. It's just... good. Wow, this is why I don't review albums.

Reminded me a little of Leadbelly at times.

a friend of mine turned me on to m(att) ward this past summer - i've been spinning his 2004 release, 'the transfiguration of vincent' regularly ever since. it's a great disc and i am really looking forward to his new one (very positively reviewed today at pitchfork, for those who read reviews) and a chance to see him on 3/4 in northampton, ma.

Mike, I was wondering where in the world you were hearing Louis Armstrong in it, until I heard his cover of "Sweethearts on Parade".

I feel like I've heard this guy before, a longish time ago. I am really enjoying it! "Fuel for Fire" is lovely.

He does a lot of cool genre-jumping, and does it well, imho. "Regeneration No. 1" is some nice quasi-surf Mexicali.

As an aside, if you like this, you may also really dig Andrew Bird's "Oh! The Grandeur" and "Thrills". Similar feel, similar singing, and incredible musicianship.

I've been listening to Andrew Bird just recently, actually. I think it's his latest one. I like it so far, but I need to listen more closely. I'm also loving Feist recently. She's terrific.

Oh, and who originally did Sweethearts On Parade? Please excuse my ignorance.

hmm, hey! No excusing necessary mister.... internet say it was some chaps named C. Lombardo and C. Newman that wrote it. I know the song from Louis Armstrong. I am ignorant too, of who first recorded it.

I like Andrew Bird's earier stuff even better. Is Feist the lady on his latest album?

I don't think so, Leslie Feist is part of the Broken Social Scene/Arts + Crafts collective. Her debut album is terrific. Listen to "Inside Out" here: http://www.listentofiest.com and stream the video for the single "Mushaboom" here: http://www.arts-crafts.ca/feist/

Thank you Speedy Mike, this is so good, I've never heard of him before, but I think it's beautiful.

And the Feist video...lovely as the music!

Didn't realize there were so many Matt Ward fans hanging around here. My friend has a show of his (live tracks) posted on his site for download. If you want to hear some live M Ward then check out this link.

http://www.acousticwood.net/livedive

Also, his site is a music blog that he updates pretty regularly. He tends to post mellower type acoustic folkie pop, if there is such a thing, anyway I enjoy his updates. www.acousticwood.net

I expected a thread about shopping at the late great Montgomery Ward. Now disappointment reigns supreme.

You'll be less dissapointed when you listen to Transistor Radio. Trust me.

Nearly a year and a half later, I'll have to resurrect this thread for Matt Ward's upcoming album (in August) called "Post-War"

Just a few links I've found online

Track 4 "Post War" mp3

Post-War album at SendSpace

Give it a listen and tell me what you think.
So far, I'm really liking it. It has a familiar vibe, but this time I think he's got it down perfect.

now for a random picture:

Lovely! I have been craving some softer, smoother sounds lately for those lazy summer nights. This is perfect for that. I remember hearing about Rodriguez years back but never explored their stuff. Do you recommend them and if so, what albums?

Yep, M. Ward is awesome. Especially Transfiguration of Vincent, that is a truly amazing record. Saw him live last year too, amazing performer. There were a few guitar parts that listening to the record I had assumed were overdubs but he actually plays both parts at the same time live. Can't wait to see him again, hopefully he'll tour this summer/fall when the new record comes out.

I don't post often enough to need a signature.

Very talented guy. Loved Transfiguration of Vincent, End of Amnesia, and Transistor Radio. His Green River single they have on I-tunes is incredible as well. Really looking forward to his new album. Thanks for the heads up.
