The Swimmer film seems to have little in common with the song other than the name and a bit of swimming.... more sea aquatic life references, neptunian type things in the song.....
or it could be about "Gamble Rogers"
http://www.gamblerogers.com/
Florida lost one of its greatest folk singers on October 10, 1991, when Gamble gave up his own life while trying to save a drowning man. Although Gamble may be gone, his spirit and wisdom live on in his music and in his stories. So we hope you will spend a little time here listening to some of Gamble's music, reading his stories, and even sharing your own stories about Gamble with all of us.

Ok, I read "Manta", nice tail. It was written in 1997, "Dog in the sand" in 2000. The star is Charlie (not the tuna) there is also a gal named Jean, now thats fishy. And yes I do have a question, what is George? he and Charlie seem to hit it off. |

I have no clue if it's connected, it probably isn't. But there's this scary/cool story that was in my reading book in sixth grade about this guy in a boat off fla. Some how he grabbed onto this huge manta ray and rode around on it. I wish I could remember the name of the story. I always think of that tho. |

My first impression was that it might be about Harold Holt. Why FB would delve into Australian politics, I don't know?

Well lonely persuader you've got to be right. "The Swimmer" is as good as it gets, and a hero is as hero does. I'm headin to the record store to see what the've got I'll search through the folk and pass up the pop.

actually, i dont think im right about either now.... the "Manta" story or "Ganmble Rogers"--
i think the song is about a suicide or a guy fed up with materialistic life (florida) and goes to test a hypothesis (or maybe it looks that way to the writer), if living under sea can make him happy... but really he dies (the scene way so tragic, but that way the magic)..
anyways, all i can say is, i dunno |

ok , you raised the question, then offered suggestions as good as any now you pull out? I doubt your doubt . like i said, theres somthing fishy here. the search or faith in a forgotten part is dangerous yet seems so right at times. p.s. "The Doctor" is dead. He seemed to be testing some hypothesis as well and was in to much of a hurry. R.I.P. |

the swimmer is originally a john cheever (sp?) short story.. it uses swimming/water as a metaphor for alcoholism... some guy walks home from a party and swims in every pool/river on the way.. when he gets home, he finds his house abandoned, his family gone, and realizes that he's just an old alcoholic banging at the door of his old house..
i don't think frank's song has any direct connection... but similar idea... |

I guess i said the writer because writers often write a song from a different perspective and saying frank could be a red herring if u know what i mean.... like if someone was to write a song from a murderer's point of view, i would say writer rather than Grant Hart, if u know what i mean "Diane".... and i'm not callin u a girl Danjersey.... |

I'm hearin ya, Its funny years ago this guy, well it seemed like he was callin me Diane, i had a short temper at the time man he pissed me off, just got right under my skin and stuck. but i've mellowed, gettin older yet younger. like i said i gotta get to the record shop. so the swimmer? i liked that "Manta" tail, Charlie, George and Sharky that was nice. |

I remember thinking there may have been a connection between the song and a short story of the same name (was it Cheever that wrote it?)
