Well, until know I have been happy that Rock and Roll is cool again after several years of taking a back seat to hip hop.
But I am thinking that maybe things have gone too far. Kelly Clarkson was on SNL... rocking out, well or at least trying to. Her guitarist was even making feedback.
I want to puke. Although there have been a lot of really good legit bands either forming recently or refoming-- it kinda makes me puke thinking about all the posers that are now jumping the rock and roll bandwagon.
What do you guys think about all this new attention rock is getting and the positives and negatives that come along with it? |

I saw Kelly Clarkson on SNL. I felt that she was trying to connect with the rock crowd. And then I felt myself being slowly drawn to the music...and I felt very scared. You have to admit...musically, that song was decent.
What is your evidence that rock and roll is cool again? Cause to me, rock still seems as dead as it was in 1994.
I guess I just wasn't made for these times. |

Yea that song was kinda cool. But the thing is I could guess with 99% accuracy she did not write the music and within 90% accuracy she didn't write the words.
Well there are the fashon trends that make it look like it's coming back. The music on IPOD commercials also indicated trends.
The Pixies tour.
Greeday was one of the top downloads on IPOD and one of the top albums. about 1/4 of the top albums in the country are rock-- which to me seems up from a few years ago where it seemed R&B.
In the last two years, my city has gotten two new alterative stations.
There is some dude on local tv playing air gutair with a worn out stick with his band (lol). Ok I know that doesn't count! |

If you listen to some of the new hip hop stuff that is being released at the moment, even that is now starting to feature more heavy guitar work (thinking in particular of the new Ludacris single).
Rock is most certainly back again.
But then me making that statement is hardly going to surprise any of you.

Does "rock music" really even mean anything nowadays?

It never left apl, I think that it just that it fell out of favour with the mainstream. We're just going to watch it go full circle yet again.

For me rock has always been cool, and I don't care if the others think that it isn't.
So this is for when you're feeling happy again And this is for when you're feeling sad And this is for when you feel... Something

I can remember years back when supposedly adidas was 'out' and nikes were 'in'. I still wore my three stripes. |

That's probably true to an extent, but I don't think there's ever one style of music that's "the mainstream." Usually several different things are "mainstream" at the same time. It's quite common that they all suck, but, I mean, is the same thing going to be considered mainstream in inner-city New York as in the hills of West Virginia?

That I wouldn't know. I do know that over here while there are subtle regional differences, it's all a very general flavour. Maybe it's the difference in size.

Oh no, pop is dead Long live pop. It died an ugly death, By back catalogue. And now you know it gets you nowhere, And now you know you realise. Oh no, pop is dead It just gave up, We raise the dead but they won't stand up. And radio has salmonella, And now you know you gotta die. It left this message for us. So what, pop is dead, it's no great loss So many face lifts, it's face flew off. The Emperor he has no clothes on, And his skin is pealing off. Oh no, pop is dead, long live pop, One final lot of coke to jack him off... Jack him off.. He left this message for us. He left this message for us. He left this message for us

I just got a copy of the most recently completed FB.net CD swap...all in all, this is about 15 CDs.
This means much to me. Rock is alive and so am I. Where I live, we have one "pop" station that still thinks Spin Doctors should be in rotation and a pile of country stations and a rather boring college station. Even an hour west, where there are a few other stations, mostly it is all corporate crap...like everywhere I guess. I found myself on the road recently...felt that kneejerk desire to start surfing the FM band...and realized that I know have at least several hours of music I most likely have never heard and a source for so much more. Fuck commercial radio. I'm just gonna let the members of the FB.net forum be my radio.
*huge grin and thanks*

Ditto Kim
I'll send mine off with my genre-specific swap.

On topic: I don't really listen to many current groups. I like the Liars and TV On the Radio.
Any more in that vein?
