OK, I have all of the Pixies albums and love them all.
I have Frank's first three solo albums (pre-Catholics)
I have "Dog in the Sand."

OK, I have limited funds here, so, which FB album would you suggest as my next purchase? For your money, which one is a must have?

i like show me you tears and thats an easy aanswer for me since i know its newer and you don't have it.
i bought almost all my frank black (except for show me you tears) on the same day, when i came into some money. so i don't really know the order that they go in chronologically. without researching, i don't know what you have.get show me your tears.

Show Me Your Tears is a good one, but Black Letters Day has the most tracks for your money, Pistolero is pretty heavy, i mean distorted, compared to the rest, Devils Workshop is this...and self-titled is that...

I guess it all depends on what your after. Everyone can offer up there fave but it's only because of their own personal taste, which you know on this board differs from one extreme to the other.

It's a cop out to say It's too hard to name just one, each album offers so much, and is both similar and different than the next one and I'm not really helping here so i'm gonna shut up now.

(Pistolero!)

Yeah, eventually you're gonna have to get all of them anyway, so if you're short on money get Black Letter Days 'cos it has the most tracks on and will give you plenty of listening hours before you save up for your next worthy investment into FB.

I'd pick show me your tears...I have a hard time listening to Black letter days without next listening to devil's workshop (got 'em the same day since they came out on the same day).

smyt is a darned good album...then go get the rest of 'em when you can.

happy listening!

Yeah, I really like all of them-- but for some reason I am going along with the crowd that says SMYT. The good thing, It's one of those things you can't go wrong no matter what you pick, Shazeb /

Definitely Pistolero, if you like the hard-stuff.

Some of the best ever include "I Switched You","Western Star","I Love Your Brain","Smoke Up","Billy Radcliffe","So Hard To Make Things Out","85 Weeks","I Think I'm Starting To Lose It","I Want Rock & Roll","Skeleton Man",and "So. Bay"

Now, if you want to get mellow, go ahead and get Show Me Your Tears or Black Letter Days. I think I would get Black Letter Days before Show Me Your Tears.

show me your tears is the catholics peak
not saying the others suck
they all have their own great points
but SMYT is the best one

To my opinion this album really doesn't sound like the other Catholics albums...
Yeah, I hear you saying "But all the Frank Black Albums sound different, you miserable french frie"

But I replie: No, you're wrong.

It may merely be a question of recording... Only Mr Black could explain to us.

Are you around???

get the "headache"-ep with "amnesia" and "hate me" - especially the latter one is a must.

but it doesn't really matter. you will love them all.

fb&tc overall
black letter days for the acoustic guitars
pistolero for billy radcliffe
smyt for the top-notch songwriting

hang on, i can't find similiar reason for devil's workshop...although heloise and bartholomew could provide them

I say keep going in order.

Although you have DITS (which is out of order) and the first three solo, keep going in chronological order. Your next SHOULD be FRANK BLACK AND THE CATHOLICS (Self-titled).

Not only does it make sense, but I tend to feel FB&C selftitled is his most important, or solid maybe, of his albums lyrically and spiritually.

I was leaning towards "Show Me Your Tears" before this started, becauese I had heard quite a bit of buzz about it. But I am not 100% on it. I like the enthusiasim some of the other people in here have for other albums. Maybe I should sashea on over to Amazon and see the ratings. But, I think the FB LOYALISTS are in here!

No problem (pistolero), glad to offer our advice (pistolero), you know you really can't go wrong (pistolero), check 'em out (pistolero), pick one (pistoler), and then get another one ASAP (pistolero)

You know, for some reason, I am kind of leaning towards pistolero. And I don't know why, I am just leaning that way for some reason. Something in oldmaninacoffiecan's thread that I can't put my finger on.

Actually, I went to win Amazon and got a free download of "Heart of Stone" off Black Letter Days and I like that a lot as well.

Maybe you should get "Pistolero" before the first Catholics album, because compared to the first one Pistolero is a letdown. The production, songs, and lead guitar are generally much better on "FB&tCs". If you get "Pistolero" first it may seem better in the long run.

FB & THE CATHOLICS (self titled) is a great album Pistolero also. both are harder rocking albums smyt and black letter days are nice mellow albums. self titled should be your next purchase in my humble opinion
