Here's a rather alarming(/alarmist?) look at what is in the pipe for America:

I must admit I was surprised by this. I expected the opposite from a nation's youth, especially America's.

Not all of us are that bad.

It is appaling though, how most of America's youth are either uneducated on their constitutional rights, or could care less about them. I do find it scary that so many teens believe that rights such as a free press should be limited. I just hope that as they mature, so will their minds as well. One thing to take into account is the accuracy of a survey like this. Although it was performed on a large scale, I can speak from the experience of a high-school student, most kids take these surveys without much thought put into them. I can even admit to filling out nonsense on some of the surveys that I have recieve in the classroom. I'm not excusing these results, just saying that perhaps they are a bit skewed.

That's a good point, sir, though with 100,000 participants, you'd think that would weigh out the percentages a little more.

But if it weren't for the First Amendment, TV and video games would probably suck.

not only that, but really, what did a lot of us know in high school? in high school some times people's politics are more easily swayed by their parents'. i'd like to see a similar survey of college students, or graduate students.

i'm much more concerned about the 3% of teachers that don't think people should be allowed to express unpopular views than the kids.

Isn't that the truth. I think the present high schoolers have been subjected to national discourse that has featured extremely hyperbolic criticism of America and its president, and so may be less appreciative of the merits of free speech and its protection. For example, without knowing the constitutional arguments, I do think Michael Moore and his ilk take it too far (I know, big surprise), but I realize the best posture is to err on the side of tolerance of speech. "Letting every flower bloom" puts a lot of responsibility on the parents regarding what their kids are exposed to, be it the media, games, or whatever, but many parents are hardly up to it. And then many minds, and not just the young, end up thinking the gov'mint should do something about it. Cooler heads will prevail, I hope.

After reading this I figured out why, exactly, the future is *FUCKED*: because anyone who's truely smart is smart enough not to bring a child into this world.

But yeah, this other survey says that 2 out of 3 high schoolers are brain-dead fucks who care too much about fitting in. The 1 out of 3 are the apathetic brains who actually become something in life.

Fuck the status quo. I always thought college was supposed to be some hip, alternative place where people share ideas and information. After living in State College, home of PSU, for over a year and a half, I've learned that it's just one big frat, which should be renamed Cookie Cutter University.

I guess I just wasn't made for these times.

i wasn't implying that all high schoolers don't think for themselves, our own sir mikeabye is a fine example of a free thinking youngster - and i was not a fascist or a robot in high school - however, you just are not exposed to as much as you are later in life. in high school you are limited by many things, and influenced by your teachers and parents much more. just my two cents

This is so true. You can't hide your children from media, games etc., so its an ever ongoing battle to explain and promote critical thinking.

As a small example of how sheltered some children are, my best friends little brother who has just turned 13 said to her the other day;

HIM. I want to join the army
HER. You realise you have to shoot people and kill them in the army, dont you?
HIm. Yeah, but thatll be ok, because they will be the enemy, and theyve done something bad
HER. Not always, a soldier could come walking downt he street right now, if we were in a war, and he might be told to shoot me and you - were nott he enemy, were just innocent people. Youll have to kill innocent people
HIM. Yeah, but Thatll be alright - i do it all the time on video games. its easy.

scary stuff. And its not like hes a stupid kid, he really isnt, hes highly intelligent. Hearing that come out of him was fightening.

Uh, so he'd be "alright" with killing his own sister? Or just someone else's sister?

Doesn't sound very intelligent to me. Probably he's looking for attention or shock value. Or maybe he's just messed up. Who knows.

That said, I was just thinking about it, and how war is becoming more impersonal. I could have seen myself in a fighter jet shooting other jets down when I was young and naive. A lot easier to think about shooting down a jet then potentially dooming someone to a 45,000 ft fall to the ground, an explosion, etc. Though I guess you have parachutes, but still, it's just that we talk about 'killing' the machines and not the people inside them. Tank killers. Bunker Busters. And so on.

They want him.
Arlo said so 35 years ago:

And I went up there, I said, "Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I
wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and
guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill,
KILL, KILL." And I started jumpin up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and
he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down
yelling, "KILL, KILL." And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me,
sent me down the hall, said, "You're our boy."

But thats just the thing, its not just academically intelligent - i dont really rate that sort of intelligence. hes street wise, hes got a high EQ...or so i thought. the kid i knew before this just doesnt addup to the kid that said this.

i wonder if it more the impression hes got from tv - that wars no big deal, they can just start whenever, or as he said computer games? and can they really influence a kid that much? scary

Maybe she'll just change the definition of "king" when she's undisputed world leader, and can do things like that for no apparent reason.

Back on topic, I always kind of figured that young people were the ones who would be MORE in favor of absolute free speech than the older types. You know, because kids are rebellious and want to get away with as much as possible.

Hmm, maybe they think the government should be more strict so they'll have more to rebel against. :P
