My lovely husband just walked in the door with a CD called "Super Bad @ 65: A tribute to James Brown," released in 1998. The first song is "Mother Popcorn (You Got to Have A Mother For Me)" by "Frank Black at the G," basically Frank at a place called Studio G, with the vocals recorded at Lyle's "Home Complex."
The song's fun and funny and I have never heard of it or about Frank doing this James Brown tribute. (The Fleshtones are also on here.)
Anybody know anything about it.
With apologies if there already exists a thread about this fine little cover that our Frank cut.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

isn't it great when you think you've heard all of franks released material and then you find something like that. i found mother popcorn a couple of year's ago. great track. and then about a month later i just happened to see james brown live. great show and he did play mother popcorn, but i do prefer frank's version:)

Thanks, you guys! I love how informed forum members are on All Things Frank. I was not familiar with this tune or the compilation. I love how Frank sounds doing this song, he's really getting into the spirit of things! He's so versatile and, in this song, wonderfully growly.
I remember digging the Pixies' cover of Born in Chicago and Frank has continued to impress me with his most excellent covers (which is not to take anything away from his amazing own songs).

Is your love based on the coffee shops, K?
BTW, I met a dutch girl yesterday. She was a fucking weird one. This is totally off-topic.

This is off topic. My obsession is not about coffee shops but about all Dutch things in general.
Back on topic.Frank's the best thing on that tribute album. Ha!

The Milkweg, Dutch Indies food, lots of really cool little bars and places. Frank tours extensively in Holland. He knows the deal.

This is one of JB's great one's.... and FB really does it up in typical FANTASTIC fashion. FB is one of the few who could pull off the Screams that do any justice to JB's originals. Thanks a bunch for showing an old fan a track by the master that he hadn't heard, this one is especially nice as I am a big JB fan as well. Odd to hear FB have anything at all to do with funk beats, though. Very cool... and with his own style on it.

True.
I just love the screams and bleeps and blurps at the beginning of the track, especially. Frank sounds like he's having a great time.

Hey Kathryn, thanks for the topic, great song
Does the album list the musicians playing with Frank on Mother Popcorn, and who produced the song?
And, yeah, I agree, only The Man could pull-off such a tribute of screams and funk to The Godfather.
I wonder if either one of them even know what they're singing when it goes something like this..."mmmnnnmeite..mmmmnnnmeite..." (or something like that. What are they saying?)
And, can't you just imagine Frank and James Brown on stage together, doing this song, dancing, and completely full of funk. Of course, they would be introduced by Don King, in black tie, and having a great hair-day

The liner notes say: " Tony Maimone - bass popcorn; Kurt Hoffman - sax; Steve Bernstein - trumpet; Sean Haney - guitar Brian Dewan - keyboard; Brian Doherty - drums. Mixed by Sean Haney and Paul Agnelli. Produced and recorded at Studio G by Sean Haney and Tony Mainone. Vocals recorded at Lyle Workman's Home Complex."

Maimone, Hoffman, and Doherty were the back-up band for They Might Be Giants during the John Henry era. Brian Dewan also collaborated with them a few times.
