Okay, I've been on this Strummer kick for I don't know how long now. I can't stop listening to him. Who else is hip to how good his music was the last few years before his passing?
Am I alone on this?
Anyone who loves The Clash, will soak this stuff up!

I've been an ardent JS fan since his first solo release, 'Earthquake Weather', in 1989. Imo 'Streetcore' is simply the best album of 2003. |

It's going to be worth it! Just don't email Carolynanna about the time I sent her a cd. She was found frozen near the mailbox.

Good thing it's worth the wait!

I'm a big fan of Streetcore... not really heard much of his other stuff (apart from The Clash obviously)... Streetcore is a great album.
This is a high class bureau de change, not some Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Margate! |

You need to go buy Global A Go Go right now! Hell, go buy Rock Art and the X ray Style, too. They are both killer, and quite possibly better than Streetcore.

I have my Nomad Jukebox 3 (an iPod precursor) set to random, all-tracks. There are about 4000 songs on the thing, including everything the Clash ever did and all of Joe Strummer's solo stuff.
The other day, I was listening to it at work and it decides to play 1977, which is an early Clash single only available on Super Black Market Clash and Clash on Broadway. Random setting still on, mind you; directly after, my little MP3 gadget played Coma Girl from Streetcore.
I thought it was a little freaky.

I love his cover of Redemption Song. Sadly we do not have much. Only a 45 and a few mp3s. But I want more!
I should be shot I guess.

I had the extreme pleaseure of seeing JS&M's three times before his demise. They were quite possibly the longest consistent periods of smiles I had ever experienced. He is a role model. If you would like to check out a beautiful show that they did in New York google Punkcast and Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros at St. Ann's Wharehouse. Killer video. Have you checked out strummersite.com? They are going to stop updating it soon. I went to a show in Dublin Ireland this past Decmember 22nd to celebrate Joe's life. Quite awesome! For what it is worth, I must say - I think that X-Ray Style is my favourite all-time album. Every other recording by the man is a close second.

The Mescaleros CDs were totally worth the wait and the frostbite!
I especially love the title track of Global A Go-Go. (I think it ends with a shout-out to McDave!?)
World service bulletin - from the nightshift D.J., To all wavebands on earth - Reconnoitre on the killahertz, This tune is going out to Marconi, To all corners of the globe, There is no hut in the Serengeti, Where my wavelengths do not probe, An' if a rocket went to Saturn... We sure a D.J. is on board, For some anti-gravity mixing, With two dub plates of U-Roy... Throwdown!Stray Cat strut in Bulawayo, Buddy Rich in Burundi, Quadraphenia in Armenia, Armenia City of the sky, Big Youth booming in Djkarta, Nina Simone over Sierra Leone... Wild sound of Joujouka in Nevada... Everywhere, everywhere Bob's bringing it all back home... Yeah I let the boogie woogie rumble, In the back of Bangalore, I get complaints from Bondi Beach, What? No longboard surf hardcore? Oh, send the rock steady out to Freddy, Who juggles plates in Tsing Tao City, 'Cos tonight! Bo Diddley's in Finland Station... Sun Ra's in Omaha, The Skatalites in New York City, The Stooges rule over Habana... The Bhundu Boys rock Acapulco, Good hip hop in Islamabad, Ali Farke Toure's in Oaxaca N'Baaba Maal's all over Stalingrad... While some are waking some are sleeping, From Kamchatka to the Gabon, Above the tradewind wingtips beating, We calling out for Ronnie, And da do Ron Ron Ron We call the Cumbria to tumble, Accross the peaks of the Himalayas, We send the funk into the jungle, To the last outpost of the bass player

The live versions are awesome. Especially the recording with Mick Jones. 1969 and A Quarter Pound Of Ishen are great songs. Well worth the order and the wait.

thanks brendan! I saw him at the troubador in La a few years back. Such a great show. Some drunk jackass was starting fights and joe asked him to come on stage. the dumbass thought he was being invited up onstage and was all excited about it. joe took off his guitar and asked the kid to have a go if he wanted to fight. The joker was so humiliated he left shortly after.

I bought the first album when it came out. I even bleached my jacket like in the video. I walked around smelling of Clorox for over a week. My eyes were a red and puffy. What fuckin dork! Luckily the thing fell apart after two weeks from all the bleach. I liked BAD 2's album I can't think of the name. Not much other than that though

Very nice story King! That is the Joe that will always be remembered. "Come on 'av a go mate!" I had a dream the other night that Joe, Frank and Tom Petty started a "Travelling Wilburysesque" band. Unfortunately they wouldn't let poor Bobby Dylan join. Not sure why?

No doubt. Although it may have had something to do with their inferiority when it comes to looks. Damn, Bob gets cooler and better looking with each passing year.

What a great dream!
I got into B.A.D. but nothing like I'm digging the Mescaleros right now!
Go to www.joestrummer.com and have a private moment, maybe say a prayer or down a brewski.

i saw a show with "live" then "blind melon" then "P.I.L." (that was the main reason i went and "B.A.D." were the headliners. live sucked, blind melon were awesome (this was way before 'no rain'), P.I.L. were great too, then i got thrown out 3 songs into B.A.D. but one of them was 'the globe' so that was cool. i then mooned johnny lydon on his bus while he was brushing his teeth as the bus was pulling away and he mooned me back and took his tooth brush and fake stuck it in his ass-crack and turned around and continued brushing his teeth, then he gave me the finger and smiled, it was cool. |

"johnny lydon on his bus while he was brushing his teeth"
What you wouldn't have been able to see back in the late seventies.
He was called Johnny Rotten because of his teeth.

I completely agree, miss. To my eyes BAD is clearly one of the most inventive and talented bands of the '85-'95 era. They were the first to combine classic rock songs with reggae, hip-hop and high-tech sampling. It's really a shame and a wonder that they're not more well-known. At least four of their albums - 'Tighten Up Vol. 88', 'Megatop Phoenix', 'The Globe' and 'F-Punk' - count among my all-time favorites. I recommend them to anyone who is curious to know what kind of music The Clash would write and play today if they were still together.
