A. Pixie Frank (Black Francis)
B. Solo Frank (first three solo albums)
C. Catholic Frank (You know which one this is)
Yes, they are all great, but which one do you have a sentimental fondness for and why? I am partial to B.. I just really think Frank was able to show some creativity that perhaps he was not allowed to show in the past. I love the Pixies, but at the same time, I think Frank was constrained under the group concept. His first solo albums were so diverse and mindblowing. Songs such as "Czar," "Thalassocracy," "Speedy Marie," "Men in Black, " etc.. I like FRank's work with the Catholics, but his Catholic sound is a bit more workmanlike and not nearly as "far out" as his other stuff. I will not call it "bar rock," but it is a far cry from "Teenager of the Year."

I think I'm going to go B also, just because of the time in my life when all three albums came to me.
Well not only because of that because of the totally unique sound to those three albums as well. It's almost like something that is unrepeatable and no one else could manage. Not a third as well at least

B because of the way he wrote his songs back then, his distortion pedal, the way he dispelled the Pixies and brought to the world Frank Black.
Basically, showing the world and all those wannabes how to fucking ROCK 'N' ROLL.

Awesome. It was like he found his passion again.
And soon we have Honeycomb to add to 'solo'. B for sure. |

No question for me, my SENTIMENTAL FAVORITE is Black Francis for so many reasons, here a just a few:
The year, 1988, I'm about four years into College Radio, "New Wave" music, having given up listening to 1970's, classic rock and roll, (however, still enjoying Springstein and John Cougar) digging the hell out of U2, REM, BAD, CURE, PIL, Ramones,...and all of a sudden I hear the screaming, strained vocals, high energy, guitar feedback, melodies, minor keys of Black Francis and the Pixies. And, from that moment until their breakup in 1992 that was the only music that mattered to me. It did it all for me. It expressed everything that I felt and / or wanted to feel. That other stuff, (see above) was good, and still is, but nothing was like Black Francis and the Pixies.
I turned my brother on to them. We were living together for awhile in 1989 and we use to ride around with Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim blasting from his Honda Prelude, windows down, sunroof open. Then we would come home from partying and crank up the Pixies until our friends couldn't take anymore.
I even got my girlfriend, who is now my wife, to dig some of their songs. However, she hated the ones that "sounds like music to a knife-slashing horrow flick" (referring to Tame, Something Against You, etc...)
I never will forget going into a record store in the mall and asking some young, hip-looking clerk if they had the new Pixies (Doolittle). He said yeah, but I don't like it, it's too much screaming like the first two. My brother and I both grinned and said great, that's our favorite parts, we'll take it!
In 1992, my wife and I were lucking enough to see the Pixies' show at Vanderbilt's Memorial Gym, which was nothing but high energy rock and roll from beginning to end. Yeah, no question, Black Francis is my SENTINMENTAL FAVORITE. |

COR is already a catholics album. it has the same band as FB&TC - lyle w., scott b., dave mc. so, for the sake of useless accuracy, there are only two FB solo albums.
I joined the cult of Souled American / 'cause they are a damn' fine band |

A. Black Francis, that's how I knew his music, and that was love in a minute. He's my SENTIMENTAL FAVOURITE, for many reasons, but maybe because makes me remember some of the best moments in my life, back in 1988 .

"sentimental" favorite would probably be the Pixies. When you spend 2 years listening to Trompe Le Monde & Bossanova at least once every single day, it obviously means a lot to you. But if we're talking about the old Frank/Pixies debate, I'll choose Frank.

does these sound like from one man or one band ? no. when i played "dog in the sand" (the album) to a friend, he couldn't believe, that this was from one band.
i mean, FB is evolving all the time. of course, the sound does change from band to band, but there are no sharp transitions. and if it comes to a songwriter like FB, the sound is not so important, i guess. i can't divide between a pixies/solo/catholics frank, not even for sentimental reasons. the whole is more than the sum of the parts.
but to conribute something to this thread, i must name "Los Angeles" as my favourite Charles Thompson song for sentimental reasons. why ? it was 1992. i just got into the pixies, and i thought, wow, incredible. and immediately they broke up, so my dissapointment was great. then i heard, that there was one bloke of them who puts out a solo record. and i was like, hmhmm, i hope it will be 10% good as the pixies, even that would be enough for me. then i got the record and i put it on. "there was a man, he was a good man..." - 3 minutes later i was smiling from ear to ear. the first song of the first album from frank black - it restored my faith in the world.

Catholic Frank.
For all the FB&TC's shows I have seen and for the reason that those brought me here in the first place. I wouldn't want to imagine my life without a few people I met through this forum.

To me, they sound like the work of one man. When I listen to his latest offering, all be it not the finished article, it has the same qualities and signature as the very first solo effort, Frank Black. He has his own unique style of writing (even though not original), and by looking at the chords even without hearing the song you can tell the work of FB.

My favorite Frank is B...His first 3 solo albums are the closest to my sensibilities. The most humor and weirdness and a lot of heart. I kind of count Trompe Le Monde as this too, because Motorway to Roswell, Navajo etc are VERY solo Frank Black-like songs.
I love the Pixies but I dont know their stuff as well as I know Franks solo stuff. I mean I have every pixies albums but I dont know it all by heart. Also I feel a little more detached to it...Like..I'm in awe as I'm listening to this screaming maniac screaming all these horrific and beautiful lyrics, but I don't feel like I could have a conversation with whoever is doing it...But the solo Frank Black I feel like I get it a lot more, and just feel a lot friendlier towards it. Well it makes sense since Frank said the Pixies are meant to make you feel uncomfortable.
I respect that a lot but I like the warmness and fun and occasional sillyness of his first 3 solo albums (and bsides).
I also love Frank and the Catholics but its a lot more "adult" sounding...His first 3 albums just have this wonderful youthfulness and naivite to them almost...Hell its even called "Teenager of the Year"...its like a young man wondering if there are aliens out there who will be his friend.

D comes very close. Because of that amazing Pixies show and the amazing night that followed.

| B because I discovered FB in 95 and the Black Session Tape is probably the record I listened to the most in my life and although I love The Catholics (and The Pixies), I think the 95-96 line-up was the best he ever worked with (ouch don't hurt me!). |

CoR is as quirky and distort filled as the previous two, and a world away from the C's works of art. But that's just my opinion. We all have one, and we're all right (as can be).
(except the thought of Catholics being favoured ahead of the Pixies. That I find hard to believe)
Are all votes in now, Shazeb? It's B, right?

Yep, B won it, with A coming in 2nd. Teenager of the Year helped B to victory, but I think Frank;s first solo album is the biggest reason. So many great songs on that album. If it had sucked, I think Frank would have never lived down breaking up the band.

I wonder when FB wrote these songs for 'Frank Black', whether it was while he was with the Ps or after their demise.
The demo version of 'Ego' he did with the Pixies is blown way into oblivion by the self-titled version, even though I love Loverings drums.
Soon as Frank heard the boom of the tom-tom on L.A for real rather than in his head, he must have known he had something special.
Hope so.
Because he had. And still does. |

Frank can usually put out about a dozen songs in a day. I have a hunch that he did most of the Frank Black songs after the Pixies and the touring that had been involved with the Pixies. I tell you what, one of the great things about FB is his prodigous work effort, there will be tons of stuff to remember him by. Think about those poor Nirvana fans that have such a small catalog to hold on to.

Wow this is a great topic.
It's pretty hard to dissociate FB from BF from FB&C etc. What strikes me is how those three "different" eras are all so counter-current. When Black Francis starting screaming about penises, whores and Mother Mary, mainstream was all about glam rock, big hair, and Van Halen-inspired guitar solos, or some teeny bopper one hit wonder chick whit a dance video and too much make up.
Wouldn't you know it, the sound (A) Black Francis created broke onto the scene, not through his voice, however, but it was still his sound... Grunge, "alternative", "indy punk" ironically became mainstream, and suddenly it became real lame to have guitar solos, synths, or overproduced albums. And already, the Pixies were no more and where was the (B) Black Francis? Recording multi-tracked, overdubbed, guitar-solo ridden, synth- textured melodies of (I think) his highest caliber, while his Pixie counterpart got on the grunge bandwagon, patting her own back because of her success, judged mostly on record sales and not critical acclaim.
Well, just about 5 years go by, and corporate music did what it does best : integrate, water-down, overplay all that was originally unique. And we saw a 180 degree turn in music, going back to polished, over-produced, cliched "punk rock", and the resurgence of that one-hit wonder chick (and now boys) and her/his dance videos, although she has traded her bad hair for a g-string.
In the era of over compressed sound and impeccable million-dollar studio recordings, where do we find (C) Black? Traveling cross-country in his bandwagon (how literal is that?), with his Catholics, making one-take, no edit music of profound, emotional grandeur.
Whether it’s the uniqueness of A, the megalomania of B, or the warmth of C, I’m still astounded by how this man always chooses the road not taken.

I got into The Pixies first and it was genuine love. I couldnt get over the imagination, energy, down right pshychoctic and at times sweet blend of genius. It awakened something inside me. Thought there was never a hope that Frank could ever beat it. I believed that up until about Dog in the Sand came out. Teenager of the year had already knocked my socks off but i still thought the pixies always had that edge. I now realize that i dont pick up the pixies albums much anymore and when i do they do not give me the same appeal as the solo and catholics stuff does. My choice would have to be C even though there are a small few songs in the catholics albums that i dont like, (which never happened with pixies or FB solo) the great ones just are so full and powerful that i know for the rest of my days I will be able to pick them up and fall straight back in love with them. More substance in my view, less imagination true but the music and maturity can hold me for life. F, Future Frank is what im craving though...
