I don't know if this thread is going anywhere but I was thinking about these movies I remember from when I was little, that I thought were truly amazing cinematic achievements. Then I rented them and realized they sucka de ass.
Two perfect examples are:
The Hills Have Eyes. I saw this at the drive in in Lowell Ma. I was about eight I think. I remember being scared out of my wits and thought it was a really great movie. I rented it not so long ago and shut it off after a very tedious thirty minutes. Just horrible. Not scary, just cheesey. Very seventies.
The other one was Soilent Green. I remember seeing this at about five or six. I thought it was great back then. I rented it and it was not very good. Nice neckerchief Charlton.
I also loved 'Night of the Living Dead' but now I'm afraid to rent it, out of fear of it's potential suckitude.
So that's my story. |

I can't think of any right now but I bet those Police Acedemy films are not as good as I thought they were as a kid.

This is so embarrassing. I liked Officer and a Gentleman when it came out. I wasn't a kid, I think I was in high school, but I guess I was going thru my romantic stage or whatever and I liked it. Now I think it's cheese-o-la.
Your mom shouldn't have let you see Soilent Green at age 5. Not age appropriate, this mom thinks.

Willow. When I was a kid I could recite the entire movie from memory. You have no idea how excited I got a few months ago when I found out Willow was actually an Ewok in Star Wars.
Harry and the Hendersons - I watched this again recently and I can't decide if sucks ass or not.

A few too, "Uh oh, Harry stretched out the roof of the car again!" moments. The end always made me cry, but it was cheesy fun. You have all the 80's movie cliches - the bitchy teenage daughter who comes around at the end, the younger brother who is cool, John Lithgow, etc. Don Ameche owned every scene he was in.
Bigfoot trivia: the guy who played Harry also played the Predator.

Willow does not suck. I watched it again over christmas and it does not suck.
I'm trying to think of some, Krull.. no doesn't suck. Army of Darkness... not sucky. Jason and the argonauts (sp?), no suck there again. Goonies, neverending story, indiana jones, dune, princess bride, alien, total recall... none of these movies (films) suck.
I always had excellent taste

Krull didn't suck? Isn't that the one with the wacky eyeball ring, the creepy witches and the tall dudes that disolve people by hugging them?
Neverending Story ruled, though I could never watch it again after hearing that Atreyu (the horse) ACTUALLY DIED in the swamp after the harness that was supposed to lift it out of the mud broke.
The Beastmaster totally sucked but I loved it. I got a pet ferret when I was 10 and named it Codo after the one in the movie that was killed falling into the volcano (or however the hell it died).

I just checked imdb and I seem to have mashed The Beastmaster and Krull together in my head somehow. Since I apparently can't remember anything about Krull I repeal my rating of "are you sure that one didn't suck?" So seeing as it didn't have the huggy dudes and witches, was it the one with the giant spider and the cyclops?

No it was Beastmaster that had the huggy dudes wasn't it? I thought they were damned scary.
Wasn't The Beastmaster an 18? (the highest classification in Britain).

Krull had the cyclops, the spider lady and some other stuff in it. And No, it didn't suck. I thought for a minute it might have but then I remembered I thought it was pretty cool, I like cyclopses.
Which was the one with Tom Cruise in? Was that legend? that sucked (I knew that as a kid though)
and Time Bandits.. that doesn't suck either.
ok, do short circuit, flight of the navigator and urgh whats the other one called, the one thats an abbreviation.. damn it.. do they suck?

Tom Cruise and unicorns don't really go well together.

The hills have eyes has Di Wallace from Et and Cujo. It also has the bald guy from the motely crue (weird science biker guy) videos. HHE was just plain bad. the worst part of the thirty minutes I watched was this one actor was supposed to be ahusband or something. He was so obviously gay in real life that it was comical to watch him try to act as if he was a straight man. He had these ultra tight Levis and an Izod with the collar up. He was running around trying to be all macho man but really was nothing but super gay man. It was just really bad all the way around. |

I think I'll cross it off my list of films to watch and add it to my list of if it's on TV and I have nothing better to do I might watch it then.
Thanks.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
NO NO NO NO NO.
No suck, not a drop. It ROCKS. I have it (It's really cheap to buy, cost around £3) on DVD, the proper black and white version. It's brilliant. Not as good as the (original) Dawn of the Dead maybe but still great. It's a zombie classic man!

Dirty Dancing. I remember when I saw it again as an adult and thought OH MY GOD. It's all so ridiculous. Mostly b/c the two main charecters both suck and they would NEVER be together.
I don't know if being 14 counts as a kid either. I should have known better!

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD still holds up. it's not like i saw it in the 60's, but, it's a great film. sure, it's dated, as is anything that's made a long time ago.. but it's still an impressive film. and that first scene is scary as fuck.
i've never seen HILLS HAVE EYES. SOILENT GREEN is hilarious because of it's severe cheese (and datedness) but i still think it's a "good" film in its own way.
when i was a kid i thought RED DAWN was a fucking bitchin film. now i'm kind of embarassed by that (though it is still a guilty pleasure)

I watched The Last Unicorn again, don't ask me why. It's shit and it made me cry when I was 5.

One bad Seed at ten or whatever I thought this was great. Later in life...SUCKA DE ASS!!!
Anyone ever see Alice Sweet Alice? I had remembered fragments of that film from when I was real, real young. 4? 5? I saw it at the drive in and was sitting on top of my fathers convertible. My knee went through the roof. I remember the yellow raincoat, and the mask, and it being scary as hell. I never knew what it was but then caught it late night on tv.
No suckitude. I now own it. It rocks!

I agree with dayanara about Willow, in fact when I saw this thread I immediately thought of it. It does suck a lot.
Night Of The Living Dead is great. Does not suck at all. I saw it again last year and it still creeped me out. Anyone seen "Night Of The Living Bread"? It's a short movie spoofing the Romero movie, but instead of Zombies it's living toasts that attack people. Had me rolling on the floor. At the end the black guy comes out of the house and he sees hundreds of loaves of bread lying on the grass and suddenly jumping at his throat. Classic.
