This is a subject I've been meaning to look into properly for some time, and I know there are some members here with a better understanding of the subject.
I'm not talking about really far-out experimental composers here, although I have no objection to that, I'm really looking to know where to start to appreciate good worthwhile dance/electronic/etc music.
I'd like to kid myself that I have some knowledge of the genre outside the filth in the charts, but aside from a bit of M83, Air, a very fleeting acquaintance with Boards Of Canada and Aphex Twin and some knowledge of creating sequenced music, I'm a bit at sea.
Little help?

I wish I could help you out Cheese, but I was actually just about to start a very similar topic. My only experiences are with Air and Aphex Twin. I'd also love to get some info.

I have had brief flirtations with electronic music, including periods of listening exclusively to it. Stuff like Air, Notwist, Postal Service, Max Tundra, and the like. Melodic, not entirely eletronic, poppy stuff. I've also gotten into some more eletronic oriented stuff, often called IDM (Inteligent Dance Music), Mouse on Mars, Ellen Allien, Hrvatski, Keith Fullerton Whitman, etc. Althought Whitman falls into that difficult (to me, at least) to appreciate "ambient" category, where it's more about soundscapes. I find those a bit boring and tedious, as I'm very much a melody-centric guy. Having said that, some of the more well received ambient artists I don't mind are Max Richter, Fennez, Supersilent, William Basinski, etc.
I'd like to know a lot more about electronic music, I think there's a lot of great stuff out there that I don't know about or haven't given enough time to. |

I really like these guys. They are from Austria. This is their record label. They are very jazzy. l
Listen to stiff jazz and sliding off of gran riserva. they have a live cd of the release party for grand riserva that is great too. I dodn't really listen to much other electronic music other than these guys.

I love The Prodigy's early stuff and I like house music from the late eighties, such as Altern8 Activ8. I don't listen to it at home but I like to hear it in a club. It's great to dance to. Some of Mylo's stuff is also pretty good, and The Go! Team produced one of the best albums of last year, and one of the greatest dance albums of all time IMO.
Daft Punk are also very good.

Cheers guys. Mike, I very much liked the Go! Team track on your CD, so I might well check them out further.
The Mylo track however, is just annoying right? the one with "Duran Duran" etc...

Not heard that one but I know there is one with a sample of some other cheesy 80's song. However I think that one is good. Some of their stuff that I downloaded is shit though. Some of it I like.
I also really like Le Tigre, who kind of dance/indie.
Mike, you MUST just buy the album. They are great live too and very friendly. I am going to see them again next month. Can't wait.

I absolutely love the Go! Team. I like to pretend like they're my little secret, but apparently not. I own one Notwist album, Neon Golden, and haven't listened to it a ton.

Cheers - I was listening to some Ninja Tune yesterday, it sounds pretty cool, also a little hip-hop-ish in places which is cool.
Jim, when I was talking to M83 (name-dropping or what...) they told me Virgin Suicides was their favourite Air album, I might have to see if I can get hold of that as I loved Air's latest.
They also recommended one or two other French artist(e)s: anyone familiar with Abstrackt Keal Agram?

may i use this to promote the electro-pop thing my girlfriend is into. she is the one who made the "debaser"-cover on the "hey"-pixies-tribute-sampler.
apart from her own music, she has a cooperation with a polish musician. This duo is called Technologic, and the web-site with some tunes is www.wearetechnologic.com. a whole LP should be out soon.

| Barbara Morgenstern - great german artist (she sings in german too..). Kaptein Kaliber is übercool, but wacky. If you want more slick-sounding electronica like air, maybe you should check out royksopp. Jeans Team is another good german electronic band. And, don't forget to check out some of the electronic stuff raymond scott did - allthough experimental, it is fun, and vintage. |

For some reason I stopped checking out the latest Ninja Tune releases. But there was a time when I was a big fan. Simon, you might want to check the Zen compilations, released last year. They're some kind of a NT best-of. And if you can still find it, get the Xen Cuts 3 CD box set. It was released in 2000 and it's fucking amazing.
Man this topic is too huge and I don't know where to begin. I'm a big big electronic music fan. But I'm more into techno than all the electronica stuff. Although I like Aphex Twin a lot. My fave style is the Detroit techno scene, Carl Craig, the whole Underground Resistance crew... Detroit Grand Pubahs are great too... Plastikman, Jeff Mills... And the French: John Thomas, Technasia, Scan X... And the minimal techno scene, from labels like Perlon, Kompakt, Telegraph, Ware...
I also listen to a lot of house music, less than before though. Moodymann is my hero, the best house producer ever.
OK this post is going nowhere. I'll just list some essential records IMO:
Plastikman - Consumed - everyone buy this record NOW! You've never heard something like this. It changed my life.
Moodymann - Forevernevermore - house music but not like anything you know. Tracks that last 18 minutes and other ones that cut short after 30 seconds, samples of gospel, political speeches, insane saxophone by the wonderful Norma Jean Bell,
Air - The Virgin Suicides
Massive Attack - Blue Lines, Alpha - Come From Heaven & Archive - Londinium - 3 of the best "trip-hop" records from the middle of the 90s.
Innerzone Orchestra - Programmed - a blend of techno, jazz, house, noise, by the great Carl Craig and many guests
Kraftwerk - Radioactivity
Transglobal Underground - Rejoice Rejoice - not all their albums are great but this one blows my mind.
Nuyorican Soul - s/t - the classiest house music ever, by the Masters At Work playing with Roy Ayers, George Benson, India and many more.

Sadly for you, they are not just your little discovery.
I had one of their tracks on my last mix CD, 'Huddle Formation'. It was after hearing that track in a record store that I bought the album immediately. I didn't even care if the rest of it was crap, I just HAD to have that song. Fortunately the rest of it is fantastic.
I am just glad that you have heard of them in the US. I am surprised by that. I always assume you only really find out about our bands/acts when they do big things over here first.

This is all great stuff, I've been looking for Go! Team stuff for awhile and can't find any, probably havn't tried hard enough, it's so cool you guys know all about them. Anyway Chesseman, I would highly recommend Matmos, The Civil War. Great quirky album and who would have thought you could make Medieval English Folk music sound so cool . They also have an album thats made up of samples of plastic surgery. I also have to mention the last two Bjork albums (even though I don't think she has many fans on this board) , one of which Matmos worked on.

Cheers HPM. Just my laziness really . I went to two or three record stores where I thought they'd definitly have some of their stuff, just have to look harder. I'm not really into the downloading thing, I like to have the actual cd in my hand type thing, and make my pile of cd's that little bit bigger  . Another band I've just thought of, who are sort of electronicaish, are Colder, anyone heard their stuff. I've seen one of thier videos a couple of times?

Yeah, there's some Air stuff on the NA Mixer that I really enjoyed, definitely a good segue into electronica. Never been a big fan of Aphex Twin though my cousin loves him.

Most of the links I put in have free mp3s. There are a bunch of others I really like a lot, but at this point I feel like I'm babbling.
edit: now I remember, there was a thread about electronica, where I posted a bunch of these bands and others probably, misunderstanding that it was supposed to be electronic-a, vs. electronic. potato potatoe. epitonic and warp should help you find what you like I think.

I just remembered this topic. I can definitely say I appreciate electronica and it's ilk more now, although there are still only a few artists which hold my attention. I just received the new Four Tet album, and this guy is one of them. 'Folktronica' apparently, but thoroughly excellent, really inventive as well as very listenable and danceable. This new album's great ('Everything Eclectic' - I can't say how great yet), his first ('Pause') is good, and his last ('Rounds') is just plain superb.

Hmm, I should dig that Four Tet record out again.
Well, nobody has mentioned Mum yet. Anyone here like their music. I think their album Yesterday was dramatic, today is ok is excellent.

Hey cool thread. I enjoy a good electronica spin from time to time. Although i am far from an expert on the music style.
Haven't seen much live (Juno Reactor...who was just amazing complete with African drummers,....The Orb, and Tricky)
Other bands I enjoy are Nightmares on Wax, UnderWorld, Orbital, William Orb, (think there is enough "orb" in band names?), Death in Vegas, Boards of Canada, Chemical Brothers, and Crystal Method.
This thread though has given me some ideas of others I would like to try. Thanks! |
