Late one night we sat at the kitchen table and looked at a map and decided that on our next vacation we would drive as far as we could. So on a windy fall dawn we drove (and took two ferries) all the way to the Madeleine Islands, a remote part of Quebec, more sandspits than islands, really. The solitude and wind and ocean were magnificent. We talked and napped and read a lot. Couldn't find an ATM, forgot our credit cards, so we bought tomatoes and bread. Finally, we went back to the States, hit the first ATM, then drove down to Acadia, where we ate warm food and drank, took showers and slept in a bed for the first time in a week. It was great.
I am posting these REM lyrics for Surfer Rosa:
I remember redwood trees, bumper cars and wolverines The ocean's Trident submarines Lemons, limes and tangerines I remember this I remember traffic jams Motor boys and girls with tans Nearly was and almost rans I remember this
History is made History is made to seem unfair I recall that you were there Golden smile and shining hair I recall it wasn't fair Recollect it wasn't fair Remembering it wasn't fair outside
Low ebb, high tide The lowest ebb and highest tide A symbol wave I must confide I guess we took us for a ride I guess it's just a gesture
I remember this defense Progress fails pacific sense All those sweet conspiracies I remember all these things I remember traffic jams Motor boys and girls with tans Nearly was and almost rans I remember this...this Low ebb, high tide The lowest ebb and highest tide I guess we took us for a ride I guess its just a gesture.
At the end of the continent At the edge of the continent

I am sure she will appreciate the thought Kathryn, if not the the band that the lyrics come from. I've a feeling she hates REM. Could be mistaken though.
My greatest vacation was my year long one in Australia, the best place on earth.
In terms of regular vacations I had a great one snowboarding in Andorra, but I think the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll one that I had aged 19 in Costa Almeira in Spain, is pretty hard to beat.

I guess I would say studying abroad in Spain-- the second would be Austraila.
Loved the Spanish scheudle three days a week-- get up and 9 go to class for three hours. Hang out on the Plaza major drinking sangria. Go have a meal. Take a nap. Eat dinner. Go out to the Plaza Major...go to some bars... go to a club and dance with beautiful Spanish men. Go home at 5 am. I cut class more than I went... mostly because of my babe of a professor, Jesus. I got a bad grade from one uptight prof- but it was worth it.
On the weekends I traveled somtimes alone and sometimes in a group. Traveling alone people thought I was French which was cool. I went all over that country. My highlights are partying at the running of the bulls, Guernica in La Reina Sophia, the Salvador Dali Muesum and Barcelona-- especially Parc Guelle. Oh also... I split from some of my class mates cuz this girl broke her arm... so I traveled from Sevilla to Gibraltar and I talked one of the Brit gaurds to stamp my pass port even tho he wasn't supposed 2. I was going to go on to Africa, but it felt so sketchy as a single woman. But that was the best train trip ever... little brooks and fields and fields of sunflowers.
My host family was also very special. I wish I could do it again someday-- but I know I can't party like that any more. |

My sister lived in Paris for three years and I visited for one month when I was 18. I grew up in a small town so taking the metro by myself to go and look for record shops was incredibly exciting.

Room-mate from college was responsible for two of my best trips. First was to Cap d'Ail in south of France at Greta Garbo's old house which jutted out into the Mediterranean Sea. It was within walking distance of Monte Carlo and was insanely pituresque. Parties by night, then lounged around watching the Tour de France by day as we recouped for the next night. Second one was at his house in Round Hill, Jamaica. I will never forget swimming across a bay with my friend's beautiful spanish girlfriend while the rest of our friends played cricket on the beach. Those two trips are so far removed from my mundane life that I can't believe they happened to me anymore~ |

Many great vacation memories, where do I start... I think the best time I ever had was when I lived in Mexico and we went on a week-end in Acapulco. I had friends who were studying in Miami and they visited us, and we rented a room in a 4 stars hotel in the Acapulco bay. Went partying on Saturday evening at a disco called Palladium, in the hills over the Acapulco bay, and the club had this amazing view of the bay, you were dancing and drinking and you could see the cruise ships and the landscape. And then we spent the whole Sunday on the beach having Coronas with some very cool Mexican guys. That was awesome. What else... One week in Scotland which has the most amazing landscapes and the best whiskies too of course... A 3-days trip to the Great Lakes and Niagara Falls, sleeping in motels just like in the movies... Our 3-weeks holidays in South Mexico... Also the time I learned skiing with a friend of mine, back in '96, in a village called Valloire where we're going back in less than 10 days...

Definitely travelling around South Africa with my two brothers. We flew to Cape Town (almost certainly the most spectacular city in the world) and stayed there with friends of friends for about five days, then flew to Durban on the East Coast. We stayed about a minutes walk from a deserted, endless beach (Blythedale if you're familiar...) on the Indian Ocean where we sat and watched dolphins swim through the waves. We drove up through St Lucia Wetlands park (hippos and crocs) then stayed three days in Swaziland in a nature reserve (this country is absolutely beautiful, btw). We left Swaziland and drove to the Kruger National Park, where we drove around for a couple of days looking at giraffes and elephants and rhinos, then drove on to where we left my brother (he was volunteering in the north of the country for a few months, staying with a family), that was Vaalwater, about two hours drive from Botswana. We stayed over then drove back to Jo'burg to fly home.
That was sooooo too short.

I spent 3 unforgettable weeks on the North Oregon Coast, in '98. Never seen so much beauty in one place.
New Mexico and Colorado are gorgeous too. And so peaceful. I think I should find my Promised Land somewhere in one of these States :)

My best vacation has been pretty well documented here (and bragged about. Sorry) - but it involved my going to London and Scotland on my own for 10 days in 2003. I also saw Frank twice, met a lot of forum peeps and just had a fantastic time alone and doing all sorts of stuff like going to museums and shopping and just walking EVERYWHERE. I hope to do it all again this year, perhaps (sadly!) minus the Frank part.
My other best vacation, which was totally different, was going to Siena, Italy with my dad and a bunch of family and friends and staying in a villa for 2 weeks in the summer of 2000. It's gorgeous there, and we had way too much fun.

I have empathy, carolyn. I spent a week in Hilton Head with family back in high school but was pretty much bored to tears...cause I'm a boring person of course.
By fall of this year, my best vaction will have been the one where my son and I take my 1974 VW transporter to somewhere cheap on the east coast for a week in the summer. Maybe.
...and now I have to go buy a copy of Green. Thanks Kathryn. You're taking food outta my baby's mouth - you understand this, right? |

Okay - this is going to be a bit rambletastic - but you've all asked for it so here it goes:
Rather unsurprisingly my most recent holiday has been the best so far. It started off with the car hire company being was foolish enough to give us a free upgrade to a convertible mustang with no bootspace but hey - nothing like the open road in an open top. It meant that we did attract an awful lot of attention (the driver/my buddy's hair was the same shade red as the car) and all the curious security check points that the US has wanted to inspect us further. Started in San Diego where we succumbed to Sea World (stroked a manta ray) and all it's tourist tat and ate at my first Raw restaurant from there went to Tijuana (did not see KOK in his infamous donkey show). Did a few more tiny mexican border towns (both of us have super active imaginations and the thrill of walking across the border every time imagining we were fugitives on the run never ceased), then on to Vegas to marvel at the wonderous hell. I have never seen so many fake boobs in one place in my life (and let's not forget what my job is!) Spent about 3 days there chasing cowboys, running away from Texans, drinking far too many watermelon mageritas, loosing money, buying shit loads of super slutty lingery. Spent new years eve in the Hard Rock - had blagged some tickets to see Velvet Revolver - to add to the camp fest that is the whole Vegas experience. Not the greatest of gigs, but then I'm not a fan and admittedly snuck out halfway through to go loose some more cash but at least got to see the only 2 Guns & Roses songs they did. Escaped a gun fight in Chloride (still not really sure of that one), Arizona and got caught speeding on route 66 (as so many of you now know). Through a drenched and muddy Monument Valley and on for some wholesome clean living fun in the Grand Canyon - 3 days there. Bright Angel Trail done in 6 hours! (Not by me - my freakishly fit vegan friend can lay claim to that one.) Snowed in in Chama, New Mexico where we decided to risk arrest again by rolling naked in the snow after a lengthy sauna (sore from the Canyon and riding in Monument Valley). Sante Fe next for 3 days - punished my credit card and got drunk on JD and apple cider - met some fabulous people and laughed a lot (probably one of my favourite places on this trip). White Sands National Monument next - very curious place - initially I had no interest in seeing it having spent time in Namibia, but a surreal and peaceful place (despite being a missile base!). An unexciting stopover in El Paso and a couple more Mexican border towns on to Bisbee, Arizona (my other favourite place) - another night of drunkeness and pool playing with the locals. From there onto Tombstone for the total cowboy tourist tacky overload, but fun fun fun. Drove through Tuscon - stopping just long enough to realise that we'd seen all there was to see, but stopped long enough for me to drink too many cocktails in the Hotel Congress (minor Dillinger Escape Plan tribute that had to be worked into the trip!) Spent the night in the Gila Bend Space Motel (right next to a massive bloody railway - not good for the hangover waking up with freight trains whistling past you!) where I OD'd on pancakes - only half a short stack but bloody hell how anyone can eat those for breakfast on a regular basis frankly scares me. Joshua park was the next stop, then the rather flooded Palm Springs - not much to see there other than a whole load of old people getting freaked out by the rain - finally onto LA. Ended up staying in Santa Monica (just round the corner from the esteemed Floop - sorry, still kicking myself for not meeting up!) since my friend who we would have stayed with was having girl trouble (typically his coke addicted fiance decided she was going to be jealous and needy) so we decided not to bother with the hassle. Went raw for 3 days which could possibly qualify as an epiphany or a bit like being on really nice clean speed. An utterly bizarre experience. Far too much time and money spent at Amoeba but then I really couldn't help myself. Eighteen Visions at the Troubadour, though I'm ashamed to say I have a bit of a blank on that one - 3 days of clean living ruined by large amounts of booze and far too many distractions. Managed to do some touristy stuff (Getty, Mullholand Drive, Hollywood, Sunset etc) but most importantly just got to hang out with a very special friend.

I can't help but think that one of those freaked out old people was my Grandma. I think she was there at the very same time as you, with a buttload of old people, like over 400 in one group. Unlikely I know, but that would be strange.

glad you enjoyed your stay in Los Angleles (pronounced in the cool way Frank says it in "Los Angeles")..
i'm just curious, do you guys have the raw food thing there? because it's the latest trendy thing here (LA is the world capital of bizarre diets).. i have nothing against it, i just think it's interesting..

no, seriously.. around here it's the new thing. raw food. the theory being that you lose too many nutrients when you cook food.
it's probably true, but i like cooked food too much.
there are many diets here, it's crazy.
and then there's me. i'm on the all barbecue pork diet. which i guess could be considered weird so i shouldn't talk

Even raw meat?
Barbecued meat is great. I would choose a meat nicer than pork though.
That's one of the things that was so great about my time in Australia. All the barbies. The meat was soooo cheap too.

No meat, no grain or wheat, it's essentially just fruit, veg, nuts and seeds.
The raw thing isn't really big in the UK at all (and Homer I met one of the only 2 raw foodists in Japan on my holiday rather ironically) - but I'll be investigating it further. The change in the way I felt was frightening. I think the most surprising thing for me (and I am a total meat freak - growing up in SA means that like the Aussies I grew up on barbeques or braais as Offerw and Cheesy know) is that the food really tasted good and you didn't need much to be full at all. 2 meals a day were more than sufficient.
And Apl I'd like to think that one of the freaked out pensioners was your grandmother. |

And there is the evidence that English people simply cannot barbeque - burn the crap out of the meat, try and cook on flames, not coals. I can see we are going to need a summer meet up where I can show you how it should be done. |
