Ok, so apparently it's from Dr. Dolittle. But that's with only one "o". Was the spelling with two o's a little mistake of the Man? Also, there are apparently several movies called Dr Dolittle. Which one was Black Francis' inspiration? The German one from the 20's? that would be in line with the Un Chien Andalou-reference.
There's also Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady, who definitely ha's a distinctive way of talking. But apparently she has nothing to do with it.

a guy LIKE doolittle...a man in the middle--one who can talk to both sides so it's pretty clear (to me anyway) that he means the good Dr. despite the extra letter...

I seem to recall seeing a quote from Frank along the lines of "If I could be anyone, I'd be Dr. Dolittle, and talk to the animals. We'd shoot some shit." So yeah, it was definitely a misspelling of the doctor's name.

I have a big pixies poster at home with 'BossOnova' written on it, which is also a spelling mistake.

Isn't there also a French spelling mistake in "Trompe Le Monde"?
Following this pattern, I guess the first EP should have been called "Come On Pillgrim."

Doo·lit·tle ( P ) Pronunciation Key (dltl), Hilda. Pen name H.D. 1886-1961.
American poet whose imagist verse was published in works such as Sea Garden (1916) and Helen in Egypt (1961).
I always thought it was about the poet who talked abstractly like Frank Black himself |

'Pray for a man in the middle, one that talks like Doolittle'. I always thought Frank was talking about someone who has to cope with mean, 'animalistic'(ahem, if, you will) people. That's a really poor way of explaining what I mean, but...you get my gist(?)
That's interesting, what BlackFrancis1123 was saying(hello, by the way!)-Sea Garden and Helen Of Egypt could (conceivably) be connected to Palace Of The Brine and Letter To Memphis...okay, I'm gonna stop RIGHT THERE! (Is that a sanitarium ambulance siren I hear in the background?) |
