Any straight edge-ers here?
I'm not, but I lean that way these days.

I am seriously thinking of buying this - just for those times when I want to punch the windshield out of my car because this world is just so f-ing stupid.

i grew up listening to these bands.

when i hear Minor Threat it makes me feel like skateboarding more than punching my windshield. though i do occasionally feel like punching my windshield too.

or setting fire to something

or smashing a beer bottle through a window

or kicking a dent in an SUV

but i supress those impulses.

I was never straight-edge (cos I like the taste of beer too much) but I love the early Dischord bands. We used to sit around and marvel at the sound of Bubba's guitar on the Void side of the Faith/Void album-- I think I melted a couple shirts listening to those songs!

Fountain of Youth records also put out lots of good DC-area stuff. Government Issue was my fave band from that scene. Stabb was a greatly underrated front man. Anybody have the Black Market Baby "Senseless Offerings" LP? Fantastic.

I have a few photos here:

Guess my post is more about the era, not straight edge in particular. I just love the tunes.

i respect the orthodoxy of the straight edge movement, but the real deal is that you can still drink and be productive, or smoke and be productive, etc. plus it gets out of hand with assholes who try to force their ethos on others.

I haven't heard them forever. I wasn't straight edge, just cuz I don't like labels. The older I get tho the more straight edge I get.

i was never straight edge. just liked the music.

i too like the taste of beer too much.

so much of that stuff sounds crappy to me now. but Minor Threat holds up. perfect 1-minute punk songs. and Frank is a fan.

anyone remember bands like Unifrom Choice and Instead? those are really crappy bands when it comes down to it.

Never straight edge either, still listen to Minor Threat now though. Great walkman music. And I enjoy playing them to friends with no taste in music, and then hearing them tell me how shit they are while I sing along to 'I don't wanna hear it' or something. Great fun.

I agree that the militant sXe people can be a bit immature, but really it is a kid thing - a teenager thing...if my son hits his teens and goes sXe then the only thing I'd worry about is him making some kind of leap into a hate group...which would be very unlikely, but you know - some kids are so full of rage they'd feel justified - bolstered by the legitimacy and healthiness of being sXe - might just take a bit of brainwashing to push them into a neonazi group or something.
Maybe.

Anyway - I'm a little like you daisy - in a way. Getting older, using less.
I've just about wrecked my life with sex and drugs but I am far from done with rock and roll.

I think I'm gonna go buy that boxed set.
I don't care if it sounds crappy.
I'm just about over high quality production anyway.

By golly, I'm ready for some shitty sounding music.

hey Kim, for the record, that box set looks pretty good. i wasn't saying those were shitty bands. just, some of the bands from that time (in the same vein) are.
have you heard Instead?
bad

I have this comp.

Great stuff.

Oddly enough, Dischord really turned me onto another DC-area label: Teenbeat Records.

I really like Rites of Spring. Think I like them more than Minor Threat or Fugazi but I definately went through my Minor Threat stage. My band still covers "Minor Threat" from time to time, it's great to play hardcore from time to time, although at times it seems my band is a bit too much on the hardcore side.

I guess, it is kind of cool that when we played a set for a local radio station last Saturday they told us we had a seven song set and we crammed about 13 songs or so into the time they gave us.

13? that's it? Minor Threat would have squeezed 26 in there!

Very true. The Descendents probably would have as well. You know a band that I personally think fits into this same mold, early Replacements.
