And I agree bout the Wow! too.
Don't you find all of Franks albums have this Wow! factor in one song or another?

When I first picked up Black Letter Days and DW, DW was by far my favorite. BLD has since grown on me, but I still prefer DW. I get the idea that some people aren't too fond of "Modern Age," but I love it. Same with "Are You Headed My Way?". And "Velvety" is an amazing opener. I'm glad Frank revisited that one.

I can see the thing with Modern Age, it's not one of Franks more crafted songs but it sure is fun. i'm a fan of the DW version but love the Kitchen Tapes one too.
Joeys electric is spot on and the feel of the song too.

On the same lines, I prefer the Pixies Velvety. i know it lacks the lyrics, but to me the DW version does sound like a song that has had lyrics added way laters, just for the curiosity of what it would sound like. Good song though, but I prefer the Pixies style of sound to the Cs on this one.

I think Frank said that he had written lyrics for "Velvety" when he was young, but they weren't very good. I think the new lyrics are largely along the original theme, though. It's really pretty similar to "Velouria," in terms of the story it tells.

I think Franks a master at writing instrumentals, and velvety was one of the ones i loved to play.
the Ps version is just so much fun, so too the Cs but it carries that countryesque sound the Catholics have developed and excel in.

But to find this on DW along with Modern Age too is a real treat.
What I like about Frank so much is that he revisits his past, tweaks and turns and offers up a delight with the new of an old.

I like the SSMVGD version of Modern Age better. Mostly the vocals are done better there I think.

SSMVGD so far has done an amazing job of hiding from my collection.

Har har... Modern Age isn't even on SSMVGD. I think Dean did that on purpose, mentioning SSMVGD for no other reason than to brag about owning it. Naughty Dean.

(BTW, I have it too)

My SSMVGD has an utterly mind-blowing rendition of "In a Godda Da Vida."

You can tell by Frank's vocals that his shirt caught fire in the studio.

What about that great early version of "Nadine," with the extended xylophone and ocarina solo?

Hee hee, look what I've started. I do actually have a different version of Modern Age from well before DW, but I can't remember the source of it.

I have the Peel Session version of Modern Age. Maybe that's the one you had in mind?

Ahhh... Devil's Workshop... My personal Frank Black favorite...

Kitchen Tapes maybe?

And yes, Devil's Workshop is indeed an incredible album! And it makes me all the more bitter over this whole Pixies fiasco to think about it right now. Frank Black and the Catholics were such an amazing band, but sadly I really don't believe they have any kind of future left.

Why you little...!

Spoke to a friend yesterday and long time FB fan, and I'm getting me a copy of SSMVGD in the next few days.
So I'll see for myself. Even though I take all your words for it, of course.

Just wanted to reply to Nimrods post.
Yeah i too have a feeling we've maybe seen the last of the Catholics (that's a 'maybe', for future reference). Frank moves forwards with his music, and I can't see him taking a back step back to the Cs.
It would be a step backwards, right?

They are just a chapter in his music career, like the Pixies, but I hope I'm wrong.
Actually, no I'm not. sorry, i lied.
I wanna here the Catholics songs but aslong as Franks up there singing I don't really mind who's up there with him on stage.

I think it was probably from the kitchen tapes, but it sounds too polished.

The Kitchen Tapes is raw to the bone. Just Frank and Joe. Tag-team to rival the best.
In my selfish world of FB two songs just wasn't enough.

Love the sound of Franks guitar on Modern Age on the KT.
Does it sound the way it does because of the lo-fi recording, or is it through a pedal you think?

Well, this whole Pixies thing, in my opinion, is an ENORMOUS step BACKWARDS. I'm not going to pretend the shows I saw eren't good--they wre. But that's all, just a few good shows, nothing more, and all indications lead to them doing the same thing again next year.

Now, on the other hand, if Frank had decided to get back together with the Pixies because they are great musicians (which they most certainly are) and record new material and play new material with them (he could easily play his new songs with them. It's not like it's any different. He wrote the Pixies songs, he wrote the Catholics songs, he wrote the Honeycomb songs, so why shouldn't he play them all with the Pixies) my opinion would be entirely different, and it would certainly be a step forward for Frank. But as much as I like the Pixies, as much as I enjoyed the concerts, in my opinion, it is nothing more than a jukebox. I'm sorry, but I really am bitter over this thing and I really miss the old Frank who wouldn't compromise, in order to preserve the integrity of his art and move forward with it.

I'm incredibly excited about Honeycomb as well, but I'd still be happy to get a new Pixies album out of the whole deal. We'll never get FB solo stuff played by the Pixies for pretty obvious reasons, but Frank is Frank, regardless of whoever else is in his band and I'll be happy to hear new material from him in any form. That said, I have a terrible feeling that if the Pixies do in fact put out a new record, Kim would write and sing lead on a bunch of songs, and that would be a step backwards for Frank and the Pixies. But I seem to be in the minority thinking Bam Thwok is easily one of the band's weakest songs.

I kinda liked Bam Thwok when I first heard it, but it did remind me alot of Kims work away from the Ps. If there were to be a new Pixies tune, I think I would have wanted it to be a Frank composition. Or at least Frank at the front of the song. But I'm biased.
I wonder what i would think of it if it was written back in their prime. Probably would think... weak.

NimrodsSon, i know what you mean. I have all the Pixie records I need and can listen to them whenever I feel nostalgic and in need of some decent rock. The Pixies were the past. FB my present and future. FB was the artist I was riding the wave with, watching him go through stages and always waiting in anticipation and excitement for his next move. I still am. But the Pixies reunion has taken up so much of his time.

Honeycomb will be my new fixation. I'm waiting.

I don't know about that. I don't doubt that Frank will want to work with a steady backing band at some point in the future, and such a band might well include members of the Catholics. Perhaps they won't be CALLED the Catholics, though.

You're right Vovat. I didn't mean Frank wouldn't ever play with the boys in the band again, just maybe not as the Catholics. Like you said. He's got such an army of musicians he could call up on, Lyle and nick. V for instance.

The fact the Catholics didn't play Honeycomb has sent shockwaves to me, signs I haven't yet understood. My brain is in overdrive trying to figure FBs next move, what's after HC, the next project, a tour. It's quite obsessive really. Here is my therapy.
