Pixies stuff and more, in many forms 3/5
Although this is definitely a stopgap and not so new (the album has been ready for a good year), this release should tide Pixies fans over until the rumoured new album. The set comprises Pixies demos and some radical overhauls of various Pixies tracks; disc one contains some of the earliest known recordings of Pixies songs, being cut in producer Gary Smith's front room and these are as raw and basic as you're going to get. Just acoustic guitar and a feral howl, the songs are more urgent than ever. Disc two is where Black "messes with the gospel." recorded with David Thomas collaborators Two Pale Boys, these are reinterpretations rather than remakes of Pixies songs, with a barely recognisable end product. Where the songs are already on the dreamy side like Velouria, then the Boys' creepy mariachi and Cale-esque violin complement the tone perfectly. However on others, such as Subbacultcha, the trippy effects strip the sleaze from the song. It's nice to see an artisit who's not so precious about his work: the demos are the selling point, but disc two makes an interesting treat for those with an open mind.
