I just purchased Black Letter Days, as I have been mostly an exclusive Pixies listener. I have FB and TOTY, but this is my first Catholics album. I'm not sure what to think. It's pleasent, but other than Black Rider, theres no real energy. Though the musical complexity is up there, I just miss Frank's energy and sillyness. Though I suspect that I need to hear this in context with his other albums...
Feel free to discuss and talk about the album, im interested to hear others opinions.

BLD was the first FB album I bought after the Pixies, so after such a long time I didn't know what I'ld find there.
My first thoughts were quite similar as yours, but it's only the first shock. After a few listens you'll get used to the new sound. It's probably my fave Catholics record.

Happy Listening!!! |

i understand its a big shift from pixies to catholics, but can you really say that 1826 has no energy?

Yeah, I think BLD is definitely a grower, more so than its companion CD. After multiple listens, it's still far from my favorite Frank album, but it has some amazing stuff on it. "California Bound" and "21 Reasons" are just two songs that have really grown on me.

Same here - the first time I heard BLD I thought it was really boring and not at all enjoyable. Way to country-sh for my liking. After another listen I thought it was good quality music, and after a couple more listens I even started to like it. Now I think it's the most emotional Frank Black album. For two simple reasons: 1. End Of Miles made me cry 2. California Bound made me cry No other Frank Black song made me cry (they make me feel other things, but none of them can bring tears to my eyes like that) And this album has some darn good songs, not to mention the lyrics. Try reading California Bound. "Don't worry (...) We’re coming to chase you like a hound." Wow!

On the contrary, I think that songs like California Bound are easy to love but quickly get boring. Plus, I agree this album has no emotion compared to the amazing Pistolero or FB&TC. Get those instead. |

Goodness, quite a few of Frank's songs bring tears to my eyes. "Cold Heart of Stone" and "I Will Run After You" are two tear-jerkers for me on this one. There are two from "Frank Black and the Catholics" that I really enjoy the sadness of: "I Need Peace" ( I cry for myself and for some loved ones during this one) and "Solid Gold" brings on feelings of sorrow at first and then I get that chin-lifting, eyes & nose wiping, who needs you anyway feeling. Really good stuff!!!
Oh yeah, don't forget, He's "coming to save our mind and our town". Three Cheers for The Man!!! |

Well, after Cult of Ray, a good portion of Frank's quirkiness went by the wayside--probably due a lot to that album's mixed reception. HOwever, the Catholics can still bring lots of energy. Pistolero has some of the most intense Frank Black songs since Trompe Le Monde, so maybe check that one out. |

Ive been listening for a while now. Though I dont like all the songs, California Bound gave me the shivers, in a way I havnt had since I first heard "Like the Mother Makes, when the Baby breaks" from Hey. Im hoping the album will continue to grow on me, as his others have.
BTW I hated TOTY at first, now i rank it in my top ten albums. I think thats a characteristic that FB posseses and few others do, that he can make an album that you will remain interested in, intrigued and fascinated by, and yet you always find something you didnt notice before, every listen. Its a rare skill.

Well I really like "Cold Heart of Stone" and "I Will Run After You" but they never made me cry. I still think BLD is FB's most emotional, you can feel a song just the same without crying. Anyway, I can now remember some other crying songs. I cried to Shazeb Andleeb and The Swimmer got very close.

Hey MadLucas, cool to see it's growing on you. California Bound grew on me the same way, just OK at first and eventually the best song on BLD. Same thing happened with End Of Miles, Farewell Bend and 21 Reasons. The cool thing with Frank's latest albums (from DiTS on) is that you might think at first they have no "energy" but they do, only not expressed by screaming guitars and fast pace. You'll love them all eventually, trust me.
