ditto Avid-Fan. I also have to go a little farther back...Palace of the Brine/Letter to Memphis. OK OK I know, but it was still Frank. |

You never know about All My Ghosts and Back to Rome. It makes perfect sense with the recording to two track.
Today I found Southbound Bevy and I Will Run After You. Then True Blue follows next. What an album. |

The obvious (Whatever Happened to) Pong/Thalassocracy is my fav back to back. I think it's my fav back to 2 back of any artist. Well, except maybe Barry Blacks Golden Throat/Rabid Dog.
I am down with New House Of The Pope/Horrible Day, Goodbye Lorraine/This Old Heartache. Do they count?

I know what you mean. There's a few out there I've noticed over the last few days.
Today I've had the rare privilage of being able to listen to my headphones while working (bout 3 hours worth). I'm going through a seriously heavy FB stage at the moment, so decided to listen to his albums all the way through rather than just random.
I Love Your Brain / Smoke Up
So Hard To Make Things Out / 85 Weeks
Pistolero is one awesome album. |

Blast Off and I've Seen Your Picture make a great one-two punch, primarily because Blast Off is sooooooooooooo long. Not so long in a bad way, I really enjoy the song. But, it is Frank's longest song, atleast the longest on his 9 solo albums that I have (the next in length of time, I believe, is 1826 another incredible song). Anyway, at the end of Blast Off, after some really outrageous jam with a rag-time piano and guitar, the band serves up I've Seen Your Picture, undoubtedly one of the thickest, juiciest, songs that Frank does.
Quite enjoyable! |

I'm generally opposed to a long song being first on an album, but "Blast Off" really works in that context. And yeah, it works really well paired with "I've Seen Your Picture."

Yes, I tend not to like long songs if the their length is a result of cumulative, duplicative (I think that's a word), stretching-out a song for no other reason than to have a long song. Some of the Allman Brothers' concerts I attended and songs I listended to as a youth (e.g., "Tied to the Whipping Post", a good song but much too long) were somewhat annoying. And, some other long songs don't bother me too much, e.g., Pink Floyd's "Animals" album, I believe has 4 songs each approximately 30 minutes long (this estimate is from memory, as I don't have the album readily available as of this writing)
However, songs that are long because the length is required to include all necessary parts are fine. As we all know, Frank's songs are usually 1-3 minutes, never too long, and always concise and yet complete. And when he does write a "long" song, e.g., Massif Central, the song is long because it contains different stages, or smaller songs within a song. Do you know what I mean?
(By the way, I hope this post has not been too long. I probably could have said what I wanted to say with fewer words. And, I apologize for getting somewhat off topic. Actually, "Long Songs" would probably make a good new topic in the appropriate thread.) |

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean, and I agree. That's one reason why I'm generally not fond of jam music, unless it's REALLY good. It's generally just unnecessary.
