I woke up today and I wanted an apple. We don't have any so I thought I might go to the shop and buy one, but the choices! Ah the choices!
The contenders The red apple?
The Granny Smith? (note, this was a bad google search bad)
 The Golden Delicious?
 The Royal Gala?
 The Pink Lady?

So if it comes down to a) aesthetic value b) juicyness c) taste d) peelability e) texture f) apple pie-ability
who wins?

a) Granny Smith b) Royal Gala c) Royal Gala d) I have my doubts in that point. e) Royal Gala f) Golden Delicious
I love the Royal Gala variety. I spent 2 years working in a grocery and I used to eat 2 or 3 of them a day. Ohhh!!! Good old times!!!
Is your red apple a "Red Chief" or a "Starking Delicious"?

I have no idea, as far as I know they are red apples which I don't very often buy because they're a bit powdery and if not in the peak of the aplleyness taste a bit nasty. I do agree with you on the royal gala, it's my apple of choice as a rule and if the royal gala is not available I'll go for the braeburn. But I wanted to check if I was missing out on anything apple wise by not really varying my apple choices.

Royal Gala rules!!!
Don't mind about my question, I was only trying sound as a complete vegetable nerd.
I don't know nothing about it, but my mother told me that I must use Golden apples for an apple pie. I don't know why, but there must be a good reason. My mother is the best cook on earth.

Granny Smiths are the best by a long shot.
I was once offered a Granny Smith by a creepy guy on a train from Munich to Vienna. He wanted me to continue the journey with him to Budapest.
Only time ever I declined Granny Smith.

Yes but if it's not on the list it's not coming in.
Not into my house.
Because they don't sell them at the market.
What a spotty apple! Why is this so special then?

Have you ever eaten that weird genetically mutated variety, a sort of cross between an apple and a pear?
It tastes good. How do you call it? YUMMY!?!?

Granny Smiths are the best readily-available apple for pies, but there used to be many many varieties good for pie-making. It's sad how many fruits and vegetables we've lost. The stuff today just mostly tastes awful.
Red Delicious is my favorite all-around easily-bought every day kind of apple. I guess you don't get those in the UK? |

I think the top one is supposed to be a red delicious although I only learned during my picture search that there were different red apples and they weren't just called red apples!
You're my favourite apl though apl

By the way, that red apple up there ain't no Red Delicious, it's some sort of squat globular imposter.
This is the one I like:

It's a juicy, sweet, crisp apple. I particularly like their crispness. I can't stand apples that are even slightly mushy. They've become pretty common here on the west coast of the US and probably elsewhere. They're also commonly organic.

interesting, and you're very right a mushy apple is a bad apple indeed
I'll have an explore and see if this funny apple is sold over here in one of the posher shops (ie not the market)
I didn't get an apple today as the shops were shut round by my house and it was too stormy to go exploring for apples.
Tomorrow is a bank holiday as well, all my apple dreams thwarted

What kind of country do you live in that you can't have an apple when you want an apple? I think our grocery stores close early on Xmas and Thanksgiving. That's it.
I love Fujis, but I would guess that any local, fresh apple will beat a Fuji that has been shipped over from Washington State. |

Check out darwin dissing the UK!!!!! It's the particular AREA I live in thats crappy and it's a fair walk to a supermarket and yesterday (and today) there is rain and hailstorms and big gale force winds. I'm not going out in that to get an apple.
I might get my housemate to fetch me one on her way back from work.

Red delicious is red but not delicious. Discuss.
Also, I am partial to a hybrid called the Honey Crisp. Now there's a taste sensation!
I wonder what Frank would say on this topic.
I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank |

no the red delicious is not delicious, I think they are very very hit and miss, sometimes all squishy and powdery and not juicy apple goodness at all.
Honey crisp looks interesting, does it fizz like that normally?
HPM, put it away! polluting my nice clean apple thread with your bananananananananananana badnesses, naughty!

I swear to god I know an ER doctor in the Castro who removed a Fuji from someone's rectum.
I think about that every time I buy one of those apples.

I have family members that used to put salt on their apples. They'd take a bite, add a dash of salt and so on. Weird huh?
