Keep it to one or two - these are mine -
From COME BACK TO CAMDEN by Morrissey: Your leg came to rest against mine Then you lounged with knees up and apart And me and my heart, we knew, We just knew For evermore
From COME ON HOME by Franz Ferdinand: You're where you want to be I'm where I want to be Come on we're chasing everything we've ever wanted I replace you easily replace pathetically I flirt with every flighty thing that falls my way But how I needed you when I needed you Let's not forget we are so strong So bloody strong
_____________________________________________________________________ "...love don't make things nice - it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren't here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die. The storybooks are bullshit."

THE DEVIL'S WORK DAY- Modest Mouse All those people that you know. All those people that you know. All those people that you know, floatin' in the river are logs. I could buy myself a reason. I could sell myself a job. I could hang myself on treason. All the folks I know are gone. All the people that you know. All the people that you know. All the people that you know, floatin' in the river are logs. So I ate the wedding cake 'til the whole damn thing was gone. And I'm gonna drown the ocean. Now ain't none o' that so wrong? All the people that you know. All those people that you know. All those people that you know, floatin' in the river are gone. Gonna take this sack of puppies. Gonna set it out to freeze. Gonna climb around on all fours 'til all the blood falls out my knees. All the people that you know. All the people that you know. All those people that you know, floatin' in the river are logs. Well let's take this potted plant to the woods and set it free. I'm gonna tell the owners just how nice that was of me. I could buy myself a reason. I could sell myself a job. I could hang myself on treason. For I am my own damn god! HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA

Great topic Emily.
I can only think of a couple off the fly.
I love this one by Flaming Lips, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell; I was waiting on a moment But the moment never came All the billion other moments Were just slipping all away I must have been tripping Just ego tripping
I was wanting you to love me But your love it never came All the other love around me Was just wasting all away I must have been tripping Just ego tripping
And this one cracks me up by Modest Mouse, Black Cadillac; And we were laughing at the stars while our feet clung tight to the ground. So pleased with ourselves for using so many verbs and nouns. But we were all still just dumb, dumb, dumber than the dirt, dirt, dirt on the ground.
__________ Godfather of nothing, ancesters of none. Black glasses and feedback took my sense of fun.

Great lyrics to a great song.
Arbeit macht frei by The Libertines. They'll be sadly missed.
Roll a Gasper The guard said he could stay alive but he shovelled and burned his friends to die People to die Oh the gate read Arbeit macht frei
In her rollers And a gasper She cleaned the steps of a mean street where no policeman walked the beat Her old man He don't like blacks or queers Yet he's proud we beat the Nazis... How queer
Arbeit Macht Frei

I like these lyrics by The Futureheads. The song is called First Day and it reminds of exactly why I have taken voluntary redundancy from my shitty office job.
Ramona, I really think you would love this band. They toured the US with Franz Ferdinand this year, and they went down really well. They have a similar vibe to Franz (they really make you want to dance). They also sing in their local accents (Sunderland) which makes a change from British bands singing in false American accents. Seriously, check them out, I am sure you won't be dissapointed.
EDIT: I have just been to their website ( www.thefutureheads.com ) and you can listen to samples of each song from their album on there. If you can't get the full songs from a file sharing program then that might be worth it to get an idea of what they are like.
First Day
Welcome to your new job, hope you have a wonderful first day We are so happy to have you join the team, you are so lucky on your first day And they say
This is the job that people die for, i hope you're ready for the next stage Alot of people work in the same place, don't let them get in your way
Dinner time you go to the cantine, you make a new friend at the dinner break You like to talk when you're eating, but today you listen to him
And he says like it or not, you have to do what they say And it is something that you would like to talk about, but it's only your first day And they say
This is the job that people die for, i hope you're ready for the next stage Alot of people work in the same place, don't let them get in your way
And they say faster faster It's time to take you to the next stage, but it's only your first day And you're not ready for the next stage And they say faster faster It's time to take you to the next stage, and it is something that you would like to talk about But it's only your first day (first day), you are so lucky on your first day (first day) You feel so happy on your first day (fisrt day), you are so lucky on your first day (first day)
This is the job that people die for, i hope you're ready for the next stage Alot of people work in the same place, don't let them get in your way
Welcome to your new job (first day), hope you have a wonderful first day (first day) We are so happy to have you join the team (first day), you are so lucky on your first day (first day)
Lucky lucky lucky on your first day (people die for people die for) [x4]

Thanks for that, I will definetly check them out. I am looking for some new bands as I have completely worn out my Franz Ferdinand and Morrissey CD's. I need some 2005 music!

The lyrics i wrote last night:
Lets sit right down here and forget that this year ever happened. All of the nights I regret like smoke in the wind. and if i did something to you that i don't remember I hope you can learn to forget I hope you can learn to forget, my friend.
You did not expect that I would get on such a bender. with the yelling and screaming and putting my hands through the glass. You said you'd seen worse but that you'd be hard pressed to remember. Well, i hope you can learn to forget. I hope you can learn to forget, my friend.
I have a young son. I don't know what else to say. Don't do like I've done. Don't give your freedom away. and i hope you can learn to forget. I hope you can learn to forget someday.
Lets sit down right here and forget that this night ever happened cause you know and I know that the rest of them won't understand. Sometimes a man can't look forward for what he's dragging behind him. and I hope you can learn to forget I hope you can learn to forget I hope we can learn to forget, my friend.

Mark Lanegan Band (my new favouritest) - One hundred days
There is no morphine, I'm only sleeping* There is no crime to dreams like this And if you could take something with you It would be right Something good
* in my humble opinion the album is worth getting to hear him sing this line alone. purdy. Actually Ramona if you don't have this you may like it, there is a definate Tom Waits vibe there.
From The Walkmen - The Rat

Good call Tre, mine are also from the Rat. The whole song really, but my favourite bit is:

I was screaming The Rat like a maniac on NYE. I reckon I put even more passion into it than the lead singer of The Walkmen does. Great song, great lyrics.
I also heard Tom Waits for the first time the other day. I was impressed. Some of his lyrics are bloody hilarious. Very clever in parts, very surreal in others. Must check more out.

I got the album because I loved 'the rat' and I didn't much like it at first but it has seriously grown on me.
It's one of those songs that feels like it's been around forever already, does that make sense?
I love that part also, I wanted to post the whole lyrics but thought I should limit it. Excellent call to you also sir.
HPM, check out the Waits for sure, I really got into it this year. I've had 'Mule Variations' for about three years now but recently I bought Asylum Years Bone Machine Franks Wild Years Foreign Affairs Real Gone Heart Attack and Vine Closing Time and I'd still be buying more if I weren't so fucking broke. You can pick them up for about a fiver in places like music zone and I am kicking myself for not doing so earlier

I got the album simply because of the Rat (like some sort of 13 yr old girl buying a Hillary Duff record because I heard her single playing on repeat at the mall), but the whole album has really grown on me. And that may be my favourite single of the year. But, I don't want to derail things any further. People may get upset. Perhaps there should be a dedicated Walkmen thread so we can all scream our guts out like Hamilton (or HPM). |

I can't prepare for death any more than I already have All you can do now is watch the shells The game looks easy that's why it sells Frustrated fireworks inside your head Are going to stand and deliver talk instead The method acting that pays my bills Keeps the fat man feeding in Beverly Hills ... It's Christmas time And the needles on the tree A skinny Santa is bringing something to me His voice is overwhelming But his speech is slurred And I only understand every other word Open your parachute and grab your gun Falling down like an omen, a setting sun Read the part and we turn out fine It's a hell of a role if you can keep it alive But I don't care if I fuck up I'm going on a date With a rich white lady Ain't life great? Gi'me one good reason not to do it ...

Don't go into that barn, yeah I said, don't go into that barn, yeah
Black cellophane sky at midnight A big blue moon with three gold rings I called Champion to the window I pointed up above the trees That's when I heard my name in a scream Coming from the woods out there I let my dog off of the chain I locked my door real good with a chair
Don't go into that barn, yeah I said, don't go into that barn, yeah
Everett Lee broke loose again It's worse than the time before Cause he's high on potato and tulip wine Fermented in the muddy rain of course A drunken wail, a drunken train Blew through the birdless trees Oh, you're alone alright, you're alone alright How did I know? How did I know?
Don't go into that barn, yeah I said, don't go into that barn, yeah
An old black tree is scratching up the sky With boney claw like fingers A rusty black rake digging up the turnips Of a muddy cold grey sky Shiny tooth talons coiled for grabbing A stranger happening by And the day went home early and the sun sank down Into The muck of a deep dead sky
Don't go into that barn, yeah I said, don't go into that barn, yeah
Back since Saginaw Calinda was born It's been cotton and soybeans, tobacco and corn Behind the porticoed house of a long dead farm They found the falling down timbers of a spooky old barn Out there like a slave ship upside down Wrecked beneath the waves of grain When the river is low they find old bones And when they plough they always dig up chains
Don't go into that barn, yeah, hey I said, don't go into that barn, yeah
Did you bury your fire? Yes sir Did you cover your tracks? Yes sir Did you bring your knife? Yes sir Did they see your face? No sir Did the moon see you? No sir Did you go across the river? Yes sir Did you fix your rake? Yes sir Did you stay down wind? Yes sir Did you hide your gun? Yes sir Did you smuggle your rum? Yes sir I said, how'd I know? How'd I know? How'd I know?
Don't go into that barn, yeah I said, don't go into that barn, yeah Don't forget that I warned you I said, don't go into that barn, yeah Don't go into that barn, yeah I said, don't go into that barn, yeah
No shirt, no coat Put me on a flat boat Dover down to Covington Covington to Louisville Louisville to Henderson Henderson to Smithland Smithland to Memphis Memphis down to Vicksburg Vicksburg to Narchez Going down to Narchez Put me on a flat boat Dover down to Covington Covington to Louisville Lousiville to Henderson Henderson to Smithland Smithland to Memphis Memphis down to Vicksburg Vicksburg to Narchez |

Not from this year, but these are some of the most beautiful lyrics from one of the most beautiful songs:
Carolyn's Fingers
When he said, 'You are full of love' She fell down into this dirty mess Some people see me laugh and tell us, 'It's wrong to make fun of me'
(Even they don't give any more) (Try, try to fall) She fell down into this mess (Even then they don't give) (Try, try to fall) She fell down and he's so sick of it all And of me
This part not out of her saw fit to drop Whispers might prove it all (You're just closer to me when you fall, but you broke) This would prove it all (You just closer to me, but you broke) This would prove it all Sleep now You susur, try to talk Reach out for that hand
Reach out for that hand (And even they don't give any more) (Try, try to fall) Even then they don't give (Try, try to fall) You just closer to me at the fall But you don't want, want me hand You're just closer to me But you don't want, want my hand
It is so beautiful that it makes you suffer because you are not this song yourself.
I will show you fear in a handful of dust |

Eyes, Boring away through me, Paralyse, Controlling completely.
Not particularly *fantastic* lyrics, but I just love the way it sounds in the song, the way 'paralyse' rhymes. It's all very good. |

Here are the full lyrics.
NEXT EXIT
We ain't going to the town We're going to the city Gonna track this shit around And make this place a heart To be a part of We ain't going to the town We're going to the city Gonna track this shit around And make this place a heart To be a part of Again
No end With no end With no end With no end With no end With no end But we've come so baby
Make it with me in preparation for tonight We've got so much to leave That's not what makes this right You've been building up steam Ignited by this fight So do this thing with me Instead of tying on a tight one tonight
With no end With no end With no end And we're gone We ain't going to the town We're going to the city Gonna track this shit around And make this place a heart To be a part of Again
