I was just about to say... someone else is watching Dave with me. I dislocated a finger playing teatherball last year. Didn't love that.

They actually have a permanent teatherball set-up at my friend's apartment complex, if you can believe it. Luckily, I was drunk enough to reset the finger without incident.

When I moved to L.A. at the age of 9, I was introduced to two schoolyard games I had never known in Baltimore-- tetherball and caroms. Anyone else play caroms?

Oh sakes alive!!! I was THE tetherball king in elementary school! Back in 1980, I found my niche in the sportsworld with this particular game (four-square and dodgeball too! I excelled in those too!), having been a terrible failure in 'regular' sports such as baseball and football. Keep in mind, it was still acceptable to play tackle football back then in a school setting. Anyway, each recess period we had tetherball tournaments. I mean, we took it to the Nth degree...headbands, wristbands, fingerless gloves...and I would KICK ASS!!! Oh, to be nine again. Oh yeah...we thought we were really cool too, because we would roll fake cigarettes in class, usually cut from blank pages of our text books. We would glue pencil shavings in the tip to look like ash, and color the filter blue as we only had access to blue markers. We would have these faux ciggies dangling from our lips while we tethered...needless to say, our lips would be blue for days afterwards. We were so fucking cool. About 6 months later I switched to the real thing (cough cough!), and have since given up tetherball to master the sport of nicotine wrestling.

Ahh, the memories.

Caroms was a poor man's billiards. You use a stick to shoot disks around a wooden table.

Dodgeball was the best. We actually played dodge penball (or is it pinball) where you had to protect bowling pins from being knocked down.

And, yes we played smear the queer. We also did "nigger knocking" (knocking on doors and running), which didn't sound so awful when I was 8 years old. I remember saying that to my parents and them looking at me with blank stares.

it's funny... it's a ball tied to the top of the post

two people play at once. They play opposite of each other.

Picture an imaginary line right down the middle that separates the two players... they can't cross this line.

The first player thows up the ball and serves it by hitting it. Hopefully above the other player's head. However the other player tries to hit the ball back and get it going in the opposite direction.

The first person to completely wrap the teather around the poll wins.

It's so much fun. Haven't played in ages tho.

Homer, if you come to the US to visit, we can play if you want.

we used to also play a variation of "rocks" called "throw rocks at Tommy"

while it was fun, in retrospect, it does seem kind of meanspirited now

i've almost been killed and/or beaten up many many times as a young lad. we were a pretty mischievous bunch.

more notable than rock or berry or waterballoon throwing was our "cardboard cat" trick. cut out the profile of a cat (actual size), color it black with black marker, make aluminum foil eyes (reflective side out), and a small, hidden stand.

go out at night and put it in the road: let the fun begin..

we played "push off the wall" - on a slanted grassy surface with about a 6ft drop (seemed like more when your 9 years old) onto another grass field. 1 point for each person you push off, -1 point for every time you get pushed off. the trick was to push somebody off without putting yourself in a position to be pushed by someone else or pulled by the guy you were pushing - no score for or against if two guys go down at once, if two guys were fighting on the edge and a third pushed both off he would get 2 points and so on. we usually played with about 10 guys and it usually ended in a dogpile.

trip-tag was another one, we made it interestring by playing on a gravel field, usually ended in someone bleeding and/or crying.

I thought of a few more... but I really don't rember doing stuff that was that bad. Licking DOTZ candy and throwing it up and having it stick on the school bus roof. Having races with your friends in grocery cars pre Jack*ss by 16 years or so.

btw, I watched Napolean Dynamite last night, funny but overrated, IMO.

funniest part: when uncle rico picks kip's steak off his plate and throws it at Napolean and then kip say "that's what i'm talking about" and then uncle rico says (in all seriousness) "give me a pigskin, i bet i could throw it over those mountains" - ROFLMAO

it seems to me that they had so much more planned for some of the scenes and perhaps filmed a lot more, like the chicken scene one for instance, or anything to do with the llama, if they do an extended director's cut or something i think it could be a lot funnier.

Rat: do you have any regrets?
Pig: no, but i had a parrot once
Rat: that made absolutely no sense
Pig: well, it made sense to me until i learned he couldn't talk
Rat: i wish you couldn't talk
Pig: you would've liked my parrot

we used to play "look I got roadkill" figured if it was dead it was fair game. Once we had the coolest pigeon that had frozen to a fence and rigorised with it's wings out, impale it on an breadknife and play roadkill aeroplane and thats your fun right there.

We played a game similar to the rocks game with the pigeon with this girl who screamed a lot, we had a lot of fun with that pigeon. We realised sadly we couldn't keep it forever so planned to post it in a Jiffy bag to the headmaster. We stored it as usual in the salt grit box overnight for preservation but the salt grit man stole it. Being posted to the headmaster would have been pigeon the roadkills crowning glory. Tragic, true story.

Teatherball is swingball then?
