This has nothing to do w/anything current. Still coming down f/ my Pixies hi, but.......Just remembered, when I saw FB&the C's at the TLA in Philly (where he was wearing his overalls), Spring, 2001? he (for no particular reason, like a non-seqitar)asked the crowd if they liked the "Stand Up" album by Jethro Tull...how he had been listening to it and how great it was. And it kinda made me realize what beautiful, acoustic songs Ian Anderson wrote/played in the Tull stuff of 1969-70....it was all downhill from there |

I recently saw the Jethro Tull performance on the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus. Horrible, pretentious histrionics. I don't ever want to see it again. |

What does that have to do with the songwriting on an album that FB liked? |

Stand Up has really great artwork, where the band actually 'stand up' inbetween the cover sleeves as pop-up cut outs, outstanding! Thats why Frank mentioned them!

I like some Jethro Tull - it fills a corner in my psyche or something, maybe in the same way I like T Rex. They did have incredible songwriting.
I think I remember that album-book rumours. It was lovely. |

I like Jethro Tull, because the three-field system revolutionized farming.

The band was amazing. Some very shit albums through the 80's, but I would rate Thick As A Brick, along with any Frank Album. Though, this topic does link in with what I posted on here a while ago, about FB continually playing the riff from Aqualung during the breaks in songs on the Pixies PinkPop 1989 recordings (BaileysWalk.com). Mayve theres a fascination there or something.

When I was in college I was living with an giant theology student who, upon hearing Jeff Buckley's Grace, said it reminded him of Jethro Tull. Just remembered I have a JT album which I've never listened to before and so far am straining to make the comparison.

Tull was good in the 70's. Zappa too. Terrific musicians. That's probably Franks point of ref. And maybe he likes kind of sinister peoples. Tull was that even with a flute.

Frank is just the right age to have been approaching adolescence while Jethro Tull were one of the most popular rock bands in the world. So, like for many rock fans his age, they were probably a very early favorite. |

I seem to remember, from a Tull tour about six years ago, that he's a bit of a cat lover. I just remember that because it was a little funny to read. I wonder if he turned Frank onto the chinese lucky cat thing.

When I saw the Pixies during the Bossanova tour at The Orpheum in Boston, Frank played the Aqualung riff twice between songs while waiting for the rest of the band to get ready for the next song. |

Oh yeah, I always call him Tull because I'm afraid to mix his name with that Mott the Hoople singer, and because I can't for the life of me think of any other person in Jethro Tull. The tour a few years ago was IA solo. I seem to remember he did a private show in San Jose just for a group of cat lovers. I could be wrong, but it was something weird. I also saw his name on the marquee of a theatre in Santa Cruz but I didn't go. Not too much into listening to that anymore. Thick As a Brick is great though and I have it on vinyl. I use to anger a Bob Seger types with that one!
