One of the best times of the year (after spending a weekend w/ my girlfriend in San Diego, CA and the rest of the week in Sacramento, CA), the few weddings i was at, and playing some shows w/ my now defunct band, the School Band, was my "Week of Mutilation (subtitle- 200lbs of Sludge from New Jersey)" with the Pixies. 4 shows and a chat w/ Charles in 6 days was just phenomenal. And getting to meet all the cool fans and board members was a blast.

Best show: Thursday December 16
Best song: tie: "Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)" - Thursday December 16/"Tame" Saturday December 18 (midnight show)

A:his dick was stuck in the chicken!

i laughed my ass off all the way from the back row!

During HCYM, watching all the guys around me sing along to Charles' part and the girls to Kim's. Everyone was smiling. I don't go to church, but that's sort of what I imagine a fun church to be like.

That and having my heterosexual male friend lean over to me halfway through the show and say, "You know, there's something about Frank Black that's sort of sexy." That one continues to crack me up each time I think of it.

Watching Joey do the robot walk in person. Nothing compares.

If you really want to know, look in the Frank

Heheh those are great highlights.

As for me, just the event of flying to Winnipeg with my older brother (who introduced me to the Pixies exactly 10 years before we finally got to see them live) was the highlight.

The other one was seeing the look on my friends faces at the Montreal shows when they finally got to hear some of their favorite tunes live.. especially Frank yelping Crackity Jones and Joey doing his frenzy on Vamos.

Sean AKA Madtempest made a pretty convincing case for Camden, but of the shows that I personally saw live, nothing came close to Saskatoon. Just so much energy, a great setlist, new (not yet played on the tour) songs being unveiled, and people from all over the world who didn't think the Pixies would last long enough to do a tour through the US after Coachella (when nothing post-Coachella was confirmed). And they were really excited. Plus Frank made Caribou antlers when they sang the song in question.

The Winnipeg experience was great because it was like, "Holy ^@%TR^&@%$&! There's the Pixies. Live. In front of me. Playing their tunes."

This thread really makes me anxious about seeing them again. My personal favourite was their opening night in Brixton academy of the 4 night run, myself and my buddies were in our seats on the top balcony discussing the pre show music which was "I know theres an answer", talking about how Frank must be doing DJ.
When the song ended, our conversation was interrupted by the arrival of the band on stage, to a thunderous applause they launched into a completely unexpected, and wager nulifying (but very apt lyrics) "winterlong".
Upon which the night was etched into our memory forever.

Death to the Pixies, i think not.

Highlights:

1.Meeting everyone who came to Winnipeg to see the show in
April. The before and after show gatherings were a hoot.

2.The fucked up ending to finish the Minneapolis show on
11/11. Rather than play the song again, Frank said let's
just end the show there. It was hysterical.

3. The biggest highlight though at both shows I saw was Kim's
smile.

Seeing them come on stage, realizing it was really them after all these years...and then having them open with Debaser.

Frank trying to get Joey to lighten up and sing one of the "Oo-ooh"s in Where Is My Mind? Joey resisted for as long as he could (shaking his head and everything), but Frank get the better of him and Joey sang along for one "Oo-ooh" (the only time he opened his mouth all evening). Joey relaxed a bit afterward, though, and they both smiled. A great example of joking around during the set.

They played Head On. Thank God Almighty. They played Head On.

Some kick-ass screaming. Notably, Caribou in Victoria and U-Mass in Hull (among many others, naturally).

Seeing them walking back and forth across the stage taking it all in before the encore. They seemed to realize how much we appreciate them.

"For all the lovely ladies..."

Joey's solo in Hull. After an amazing solo (with the drumstick this time), he motioned for the band to come back. Frank smiled and shook his head. Joey got a panicked look on his face and played some more. Then Frank agreed to come back. I don't know why, but I just love watching Joey squirm. Maybe it's because everybody loves him but he doesn't seem to realize it. Since he can do no wrong, when he goes beyond his comfort zone, he always pulls through and then seems to get into things a little more.

Kim's smile. Kim talking to the crowd. Kim talking to the band. Kim's beautiful singing. And, I guess I should throw it in, when Kim missed her "I Love You" cue in La La Love You and realized a little late. I think she came up with "Oh!! Love You!" Never fails to make me smile when I hear it on the CD.

Front row in front of Joey the first time. Front row in front of Kim the second time. Front row. To see the Pixies. Front row.

The feeling after seeing them for the first time. Kind of like a happy zombie. In desperate need of something to help you wind down. Drinking a few glasses of beer, but still only being able to come up with the words, "Best concert ever."

At the Nashville show at the Ryman (home of the Grand Ol' Opry), Kim was not feeling well. During the show, Charles turned to her and asked: "Kim, are you in pain?" Her response: "Charles, I'm an artist. I'm always in pain."

Perfect answer, and a killer show.

This may not resonate with anybody else but the first Montreal show, when they hit the stage, just being in the room, not just with the Pixies but with the whole audience and the lights and the whole vibe, made me cry. Sob actually. Then I rocked out. It felt so raw and spiritual an experience and goooooooooood.

I still believe in the excellent joy of the Frank

I saw them thrice, shows 2, 3 and 4 of the warm up tour. The first show was amazing, cause it was all "hey, it's the Pixies, I'm ready to die now". But the third show... It was the Pixies, in a huge cavernous venue, with 7000 insane fans in my own home town of Saskatoon. The absolute most amazing moment was when they launched into "UMASS". It's never been my favourite song, though I do love it. It was maybe the third of fourth song in, and up to that point I was happy to be there, but not overwhelmed. I mean, it was my third show in 3 nights, I was a little tired, but still fairly pumped. We (Deaner and I) were in the first row, mashed up against the barrier, and when UMASS hit, it was like all 7000 people simultaneously freaked out. There was a surge in the crowd that was indescribable. There was a physical push, and I was squeezed against the barrier so hard, I thought my lungs would ooze out my mouth, but I didn't feel it because of the electric energy that flooded the building (impressive, considering the 30ft hight ceilings). It was an experience I'll never forget, and that moment was the most intense, joyous, fierce, beautiful moment I've ever had with live music.

regina: such a small venue, so much energy, planet of sound opener, it was downhill from there....

saskatoon: bone machine opener......river euphrates... hey......closed with a stellar levitate me.... my personal favorite show of 2004.....

vancouver 4.22: la la love you opener....aborted, leave satge, come back on re-do it...classic...

vancouver 4.23: Frank Black was all talkative and "kinda" drunk?! on stage...."I was talking to a fan backstage and they said that we dont move enough on stage......" the pixies then decided to do a round of "hi-fives" for the crowds amusement.... then launched into a stellar version of BLOWN AWAY..... Frank "I think im kinda drunk joe.... maybe its cause im wearing clogs tonite?!".... gotta love the disc lives to capture those moments again and again :)

the nyc shows!!!.... i grew up in nyc, and i saw them twice back in the 90's at the Ritz.... so these were a must for me.... saw some great shows with some of my oldest and dearest friends, best holiday gift ever!!!!

peace and love to all of you,

THANK YOU PIXIES!!!!!!!!!!!

Extended outro to "Number 13 Baby" in Hull. All I could see was the silhouette with a continuous ending to the song.

"Have we ever played in Winnipeg before?" "NO!!!"

"Debaser" on the first night in Vancouver in April. First time I've ever seen a crowd jump so high, so fast.

Last show in NYC rocked. "Tame" almost gave me whiplash.

Getting to the 12/11 show at 1pm because i didn't know how big the crowd would be... and having the sidewalk in front of Hammerstein all to myself for HOURS. And being the first one in, getting right up front, and bouncing like crazy.

Frank saying "Hi Kelly" in Paris (i know he meant Ms. Deal, but I like to think it was directed at me - there couldn't have been that many Kellys in Paris !) And of course seeing the Pixies for the first time in for-real vision, something I thought could only happen in my dreams

Dancing my ass off and seeing how happy Kim was in Montreal

Seeing how happy they all were in Hull and just being mesmerized that they still all rock so hard after all these years!

What a tour!

the San Diego show back in September was great, but since I heard lots of bootlegs from the tour, and knew the basic setlist, I wasn't expecting any surprises..... but when they bust out "Bam Thwok" for the first time ever live.. that definitely rock-a'd my soul nicely!

played Gigantic twice.

the 2nd time was the closer, Kim said, "we have a special
request tonight, from Charles."
they played it extra long extra rocking with Frank saying
"good night" to everyone in the band.
Fantastic.

1) Spokane, WA show when they started w/ subbacultcha and "screwed up" and went off the stage and came back and played the song entirely. probably an act, and i think they did this on a few other shows, but i like to pretend it wasn't.

2) Bend, OR hearing river euphrates

I'm a humble guy with healthy desire
