Frank disagrees. Listen to the BBC interview. He won't actually tell you where he was born, but he will deny Long Beach.

Unless you were joking, in which case, I'm an ass.

do you have a quote from it?

ever interview i've ever seen says the same thing.. i would think if the press had the wrong information, he, and or his management, would want to correct it..

It's an audio interview. I'll look for it. Basically he was talking about how there's so much misinformation about him floating around and it drives him crazy. A few minutes later, the exchange went something like this:

BBC dude: "So Frank, you were born in Long Beach, California, and..."
Frank: "NO! I wasn't born in Long Beach, California! See? That's exactly what I'm talking about!"

It was a good interview, SMYT-era. Discussion of drunken-ness and crusty underwear, if I recall correctly.

then i could be wrong.. i'm not that closed minded..

my stance has always been: everything says Long Beach so i'm inclined to believe Long Beach. but maybe it's not Long Beach after all.

i don't think that song lyrics count as evidence though (which i believe is what Mr Grieves' argument hinges on, if i'm not mistaken)

From the Boston Globe: January 21, 2001

“Frank Black, a.k.a. Black Francis, born Charles Thompson IV in Boston 35 years ago, takes the notion of his first band's impact on the course of popular music with a large grain of salt.”

Later: “Personal file Frank Black Born St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Brighton, April 6, 1965. Raised: Left for California when he was 3 months old, but shuttled between here and there several times during childhood. Name of first band White Stag, in third grade.”

From the Omaha World-Herald :September 26, 2004

“Black -- who was born Charles Thompson IV in Boston -- said he's looking forward to the Lincoln gig.”

From The Arkansas Democrat Gazette: December 1, 2002

“Black, 37, was born Charles Thompson in Boston. He issued his first solo album in 1993.”

More from the Boston Globe: January 21, 2001

SIDEBAR: Personal file Frank Black Born St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Brighton, April 6, 1965.

Raised: Left for California when he was 3 months old, but shuttled between here and there several times during childhood.

Name of first band: White Stag, in third grade.

Where the name Frank Black, and its predecessor Black Francis, came from?: Not only did my father name me at birth, but when I entered the realm of entertainment, he named me as well. . . . Francis was my grandmother, and Black was a [family] surname back a hundred years or so. I believe they were criminals who escaped the noose and came to Maine.

How about the name the Pixies?: Joey Santiago was searching the dictionary in alphabetical fashion and was in the P’s. Before we were a real band, it was going to be Pixies in Panoply.

Favorite non- music pastime: Hiking. It's a resurrection. I used to enjoy it when I was a teenager, and then I stopped. But for the last six months, I do a lot of hiking in LA.

People's biggest misconception of him?: Probably that I'm an angry, moody person. I believe I'm more light- hearted and happy.

The one thing he wishes people would get right?: Caesar salad.

What do they get wrong?: Everything. It's just the most watered down, bastardized dish in mainstream American cuisine. It's a basic simple thing to make, and they get it wrong.

Well, I think the page is down. I thought I book marked it but it's nowhere to be found. This is pissing me off because I listened to it quite recently. However, I'm absolutely positive he insisted he was not from Long Beach but in fact moved there as a baby. I heard the man say it with my own two ears. The part that doesn't help anyones arguement is that he refused to say where he was born, even when pressed.

And I remember another part of the conversation - someone called in saying they remembered when he used to call himself Charles White before he changed his name(wtf), to which Frank responded (with trademark sarcastic attitude), "Yeah, Charles White from Long Beach."

The thing about the 2001 Boston Globe article is that you can tell from all the hiking references and Caesar salad comments that the information is being given contemporaneously. Further, it says Brighton, not Boston. It just rings true to me that during the interview he stated that he was born in Brighton at St. E's. If you comb other articles, it will say Boston.

Yes, but you still lose the trivia contest, floop, and that's what really matters.

Does anyone know the radio session I'm talking about? He played Manitoba and My Favorite Kiss, the English interviewer asked him why americans like therapy so much... ringing bells for anyone else?

i haven't lost shit.

i disagree that most articles say Boston. do a search and see for yourself. everything says Long Beach.

if it's Boston, that's great. but thus far that has not been proven, as the man himself has neigher confirmed or denied it.

Plus I got this from their website. Looks like the real deal. http://www.semc.org/home/default.asp

About Caritas St. Elizabeth’s:
In 1868, five laywomen members of the third order of St. Francis founded St. Elizabeth’s as a hospital dedicated to the care of women from Boston’s South End. They began to care for women in need, regardless of their ability to pay, regardless of their position in the community, regardless of the nature of their illness. As the hospital’s care expanded, it outgrew its South End facility, and in 1914, through the efforts of the Archdiocese of Boston, the hospital was established at its present location. Blck Franzes wuz burn here in 1965. he sings a song from a Brad Pit movie, you know , the fighting thing.

What I meant was, when an article says that Frank was born in Mass, it says Boston instead of Brighton. Brighton is a more specific term and leads me to believe that when he sat for the 2001 Boston Globe interview ( inaddition to talking about bad salads) he said he was born in Brighton. Just rings more true.

Articles don't mean *makes jacking-off motion with hand*. And I never said he was from Boston. He could be from Alaska for all I know. But I DO know that Frank says he wasn't from Long Beach. You lose.

I think we're all trying much too hard, here. The obvious answer is that Frank was brought to California by the aliens when he was 3 earth months old.

But didn't start to rock the world until he came back to Boston. Sounds like Cali was holding him back.

In all seriousness, does this really matter? Isn't this the equivalent of some George Clooney website arguing over where his favorite restaurant is? We have to relax. And I'm talking about myself here.

You callin me a liar, floop? I'm not opposed to flying out to California and breaking whatever the hell it is you cook your quesadillas in. Just so you know.

This would be an excellent question to ask The Man the next time he pops his head in. He probably wouldn't answer it, but it can't hurt to try.

It was BBC Radio 6 with Steve Lamacq. He also played an acoustic live solo minor chord version of Shrimp Song of wich I can proudly say I am in possesion of.
