Does anybody know what guitars/amps were used on the Velouria and What Is My Mind recordings?

I don't have any definite info on this, but I believe Joey plays a Gibson Les Paul, and Frank has played Fender Telecasters for as long as I have paid attention. FB has used Vox AC30's for his touring with the Catholics, but I don't know what amps he used in the past with the Pixies or what they are using on the current tour.

A Japanese Telecaster with twin humbuckers was the mainstay in the early days. I think it was stolen along with the rest of the Catholics' gear many years later. Charles experimented with a Jazzmaster (see the 'Allison') video and a Gibson semi-acoustic too.

On this tour it's just been a variety of Teles. I don't know if he just uses the stock pickups or whatnot. And judging by the pics from the recent NY shows, it's Marshall stacks all the way.

the replies so far mention only touring rigs. often times the studio amps are a different affair. ive not seen a good database of pixies equipment used in the studio. i know that by bossanova, both frank and joey were using marshall stacks live. i dont hear a vox amp on 'veloria'. my guess is they used marshalls for the harder stuff in studio. 'wimm' was probably just recorded straight off their live rigs, as is steve albini's practice.

Apparantly, joey took the covers off the Gibson 335's pickups as he reckoned they would sound better exposed to crud, and Frank lobbed the locking nut and whammy bar off his strat in favour of bending the strings by mashing his palm against the bridge. i don't know which songs this was done for, and frank with a strat i'd love to see.

For the theremin effect on 'Velouria', play through a volume pedal to blur the notes into one fluid movement and manually work a pitchshifter until you get an ethereal shriek. For a Star Trek vibe, use analogue emulation echo such as the Danelectro Reel Echo or Joey's choice, the Boss DM-3 Analog Delay. Just whack up the reverb on the amp and set a tremolo pedal to a fast pulse for a loopy effect.

Maybe using a Marhall JCM900 100W head and a custom '57 Goldtop Les Paul would bring you closer to a sound.

They both played Gibson guitars in the old days. Watch the show at the Brixton Academy in 1991 for instance. Nowadays, Black play a Fender Telecaster. (in case of Velouria)

I've never seen him play a Gibson. What model, do you know? I always presumed he was a Fender man.

He is a Fender man, but I am sure that I saw him play a Gibson in 1991, for the heavy stuff such as Velouria, The Happening, Planet of Sound... Check out the Alec Eiffel clip for instance, or the Brixton Academy in 1991. ;)

There's am article that names Charles' Gibson as being an ES345. Not only is he playing it in the 'Alec Eiffel' video, but also in the promo for 'Los Angeles'.

He's always had a Tele of some variety with him since the start, though.

Thats a Mustang in the Allison video incidently, not a Jazzmaster.

Black also used this mystery guitar around Bossanova-

I've seen a video of 'em playing Rock Music on the Word, Black uses that guitar and it sounds identical to the album. I'm pretty sure Velouria is double tracked with 2 different guitars, maybe the white Tele or that blue thing, and more punchy classic Tele sound.

Oh, and I'd guess it would be a JCM 800, don't think Black had the Solando by then.
