I've never had one before but I'm pretty sure I had one last night, and jesus mary and joseph are they beyond painful. I mean the lights must be out, have to lay completely still, almost vomiting, near blindness, I think my brain is going to shoot out my ears from the pressure painful. Anyone else get them? I'm scared I'll get one again. Can you give me the lowdown on them?

Poor Caroly. Did your kids understand? That must be tough.
Frova (frovatriptan succinate) works well for my husband. He gets them much more often that I do. It's been suggested that you should avoid caffeine and alcohol, but there are also people that suspect that a lot of migraines are caused by food allergies/reactions, like a developing intolerance for wheat gluten or processed sugars, etc. One thing that I know is true is that exercise is one of the absolute worst things to do when you feel one coming on, so you have to avoid even going up and down stairs. I can't imagine being active during one f I have the choice, so that's pretty moot, IMHO.
How long did it last? I hope you never get one again either, they're horrible!

Hmmm, interesting because I also had a sore tummy all day long and then it came on at about 6:00 and lasted until about 10:00, and even then it wasn't gone completely, just tolerable enough to fall asleep. I do stay away from refined sugars though. Hubby kept the kids out of my hair during that time so it was alright. Today, the base of my neck still feels sore. Thanks apl.

Hmm, the base of your neck is sore? Is it stiff at all? I only ask because when SpudBoy had that awful weird headache that lasted for 6 months the sore/stiff neck was one of the symptoms that the ER docs asked about when checking for possible causes besides migraine (it turned out not to be a migraine at all).
Did you have any visual or auditory hallucinations? Are you dizzy or anything today? You may have already considered this, but it is probably a good idea to keep a daily journal of what you eat, what you do, and how you feel for the next several weeks. It could be caused by any number of things, and the journal seemed to help us help SpudBoy out of the headache cycle when none of the docs were able. I ain't no expert, but I'm happy to share any personal experience that might be useful, especially when you find out how little the medical profession really knows about them!

Migraines are the worst. If you can figure out what set off this one hopefully you can prevent another from coming on. Did you eat anything different yesterday (any kind of processed cheese or meat)? More stress than usual? Hopefully since it's your first it will be your last. Does anyone else in your family get migraines?
As far as treatment goes, if it gets to the point where you're lying in bed unable to move, you should really get someone to drive you down to the emergency room (bring your sunglasses, even at night). They can hit you up with some Ergostat and Phenergan and you'll be good to go. Just make sure you have a ride, because even if you're ok enough to drive there you'll be too sleepy to walk to the car 5 minutes after they give you the injection.
Catch it early enough and excedrin migraine can probably knock it out as long as you take it immediately when you start to feel symptoms. I know some people that grow an herb called feverfew that really seems to help them. I guess you can either make a tea out of it or chew on the leaves. It has to be fresh and you can't use it if you're pregnant. I can ask around about that for you if you'd like. Hopefully las night was just a freak occurance and you'll never have to deal with it again!

Yes apl my neck is sore and stiff. Oh my god am I going to die? ;) No dizziness or hallucinations.
I don't wanna go to the ER :( Last time my husband had a horrible migraine where he started to speak jibberish, we took him to the ER and they made him get a spinal tap. I came, I saw, I fainted.
All I had yesterday was breakfast which was bacon eggs and toast. (It is getting near that time, which can sometimes make my neck and shoulders feel tight.) My mom went through years of horrible migraines but that was from about age 20-35 (which is funny because her doc used to say that it was all in her head...) and so did my bro from about 20-25. And yeah my mom likes the feverfew, she says its good for fibromyalgia.

Oh and apl I believe the medical profession doesn't know squat when it comes to diet and nutrition. Heaven forbid they ever do anything preventative.

Well since you don't have a fever you're off the hook, but if you develop one in the next day or so you should go in right away. Headache + stiff neck + fever = well, a spinal tap. Sorry. Your neck is probably stiff because you were very tense last night. Just take it easy and try not to do anything that will raise your blood pressure.

Don't worry, if it was meningitis you'd have a very high fever, and I'm pretty sure you would notice that.

I'm not an expert but I read somewhere that, according to a recent French study, 90% of migraines are caused - directly or indirectly - by undetected dental problems. |

Hmmm, I go to the dentist regularly so I think I should be good except I did get a new crown about 2 weeks ago, hmmm.
One other thing was that yesterday I was extremely thirsty all day long, I didn't do any drinking this weekend either.

May you never get another...
I doubt it's meningitis, you'd know it, it really isn't nice I can vouch for that. You'd still be feeling it too

You had meningitis, Tre? I had meningitis and boy was that a fun ride. As far as the dental thing goes, TMJ can cause some nasty headaches, but it's pretty well proven that most migraines come from food, hormones and stress. I think everyone will feel a lot better as soon as floop hits 5,000.

When I started college you had to get a meningitis vaccine if you wanted to live in the dorm. They were having tons of outbreaks because everyone was walking around in the halls barefoot and using the same showers. I got it when I was 16, completely delirious, no idea where I was or what was going on, had to be carried into the ER, fever of 106, hosptial for 6 days. Good times.

I'm sorry to hear about that Carolynanna. Hows that stiff neck treating you? I wish I had more knowledge of migraines to impart, but alas, I don't. I'm lucky enough not to have suffered one. I do know however that my dad is prone to the occassional migraine, and he takes a medication called Imitrex, which he swears by. Usually knocks the migraine off withine a few hours. Hope this is the last time you have to deal with one. Feel better.

Try magnesium first. Some of those migraine medications have pretty severe side effects (up to and including suicide). |

I get them about once every year or two and when I do it owns me for about 2 days. When it first comes on I get a blind spot and thats when I know the worst is yet to come. After that I need to lay down and be in total darkness and completey quiet. I cant think or remember the easiest things, it just controls my mind. One time I was laying in total darkness and I did start hearing voices, "We didnt make you do this" and it scared the shit out of me. I had never heard of that being a symptom until reading this thread. I just thought I was insane or losing my mind. Is that common for auditory hallucinations?? Then after a long nap or a night of sleep the worst of it is gone, but I still have a pounding headache for 2-3 days. I wouldnt wish one upon anyone. They are not kind. |

I had only one in my life- thank god. my mom and sister get them. when I had that one, my mom suggested a steady, humming sound to help me fall asleep, so she put on a fan. It was far better than the silence. Yes, diet, stress, exercise. Very similar to alleries, of which I suffer. I suggest yoga for long-term control of stress and for relaxing those tight neck muscles.
I think the sore neck is really common. Don't worry. |
