So what did the little fuck-up do this time?
She's getting a tough lesson on how not to be a rock star. Did I say rock?
The Simpsons. Always cracks me up. |

the brown album might be my 3rd or 4th favorite FB album of all time. the sequence, despite being alphabetical, works SO well - i think its his best sequence record, and the energy just doesn't let up. plus lyle sounds fantastic.

Wimpy corporate pop played by people who look like they're dressed as punk rockers for Halloween. Her singing was so bad she was booed. Behind the stage was an anarchy "A". Somehow I don't think irony was intended.
But back to the gold album..."Suffering" is my latest fave from the album. I love the bridge. I crack up when FB says he slept all night in a plastic car and got in an accident. |

For some reason I half expected this. Sometimes I totally detest the marketing machine of corporate labels, then other times, it's the puppet itself that riles me more. How can someone be so fake and yet be so optimistic. You gotta love popular music. Makes me laugh.
At the mo, we got Minnie Driver (the actress. you know her?) doing the chat show circuit singing her songs she's written. Think she's decided it's time to be taken seriously as a musician. And it is serious. Real, I mean. She plays and sorta strums an acoustic at the same time. It's funny to watch wannabes like this looking at their guitar with such concentration when all they're strumming is an open G. Fools.
Back to thread, I've always love Suffering and often wondered the reference to the plastic car. Is it Frank referring to it being new, plastic, no character? Not sure. I've yet to hear the acoustic version though. That would be a treat. What I love best about this track is, Man Who Was Too Loud proceeds. This song is on the very very short list of my all time Best Frank songs ever. Not the favourites list, the Best Ever list. One reason is the key change. |

As cheesey as this sounds I must say that king & queem of siam has got to be my favorite song on the album, but mainly because my husband and I played it as we drove off from our wedding reception. I always remember that moment whenever I heard that sound to this day. |

that's quite a story. nice memory too for you both.
and i gotta give my nod to your choice of tune too. Really love Franks singing on this one, and his lyrics.....man, he's so intelligent. he has stories and knowledge about so much stuff i feel dumb. |

i think fb&tc's is frank's best sounding solo record. everything is crisp. i'd actually like to see frank go back to recording live to 2 track in a real studio. |

I love the Green Acres intro to All My Ghosts.
This album has some real tear-jerkers in it. I especially enjoy the sadness of Dog Gone, I Need Peace, and Solid Gold, with the latter two being turned up to 11.
And, Suffering, really reminds me of a good Who song, a lot of Pete Townsend songwriting and Roger Daultery vocals.
Really great stuff. |

I sometimes have to wonder whether these people are really so naive as to how they're industry puppets, or there are clauses in their contracts that force them to act that way. Probably a combination of both.
EDIT: Oh, and back on topic, I used to not like "King And Queen Of Siam" that much, but, about a month ago, when it showed up on a random playlist, I realized how great a song it really is. Like a man from Texas, Frank sure can play.

I'm back on FB&C after a hiatus. This album holds up well, and is certainly better than some critics' comments. All Music Guide gives it 2.5 out of 5 stars, which I think is a bit low.
Of the entire catalog, I consider Bossanova, Teenager, Pistolero, Black Letter and Devil's Workshop as having the most filler. I consider none of the albums to be duds, however. Just not as solid, song after song, as the others.
Would I rather wait three or four years between albums so they could all be "perfect"? NO. That is a boring way to make records.
I don't understand the revulsion some have regarding Pistolero. Songs like "I Love Your Brain" and "I Want Rock N' Roll" aren't as indelible and visceral (or perhaps intelligent) as "Gouge Away" or "Thallasocracy," but they get my groove on. The increasing hint of country influences was cool. I hadn't heard many good fusions of country and punk previous to that -- early Uncle Tupelo at times, and that's about it.
By the way, anyone here like Hank III? I like his attitude and live sets. Country music by a man whose other band is called "Assjack." A *good* "Gin & Juice" cover? Can't beat that ...
Anyway, the brown album epitomizes one of the things I like about Frank's music -- the smart, unusual lyric. "I'm sorry 'bout the Visigoths" is a great, funny line. I miss that attitude in some of his more recent material. |

I downloaded the Ashlee Simpson clip from the Orange Bowl. She doesn't do any worse than most pop stars do at halftime. But there is something comical about it. She is trying *so hard* to be Siouxie Sioux and her band is trying *so hard* to look like Green Day (while sounding like Incubus). So, only a 14 year-old could be convinced by the performance (I know, that's the target). Avril is positively "street" compared to this.
The topper, though, is a 10-foot-tall "anarchy" symbol painted on a trampoline (or something) off stage left. This isn't music -- it's a 10th-grade Homecoming skit.
The booing is inaudible until the very end. But it's almost unanimous. I couldn't hear any cheering. Also, the girl is dog ugly. I know that shouldn't be important, but it is, when the entire product that is being marketed here is image and look.
PJ Harvey isn't conventionally pretty, but she's real, smart and talented. And that makes her many times more attractive than the "pretty girls" like Britney. But Ashlee is just a doggie girl a generation of kids is being told that they are supposed to find attractive. I'm doubly, even triply insulted!
It's like high school, when everyone is supposed to worship the popular girls' often dumber and uglier younger sisters out of matrilineage -- when all the smart(though not necessarily most popular) boys knew the truly hot girls hung out in the music room and the library.
I feel bad for Ashlee Simpson the person, but not for the message the boos sent to her employer/controller/marketers.

Sometimes Back To Rome is my favorite FB song. Whenever I need to hear that song I put on the brown album and I don't have to skip any of what follows. I Gotta Move and Six-Sixty-Six are huge favorites as well. The bonus cd which came with the cd has some pretty good tracks too.
TOTY certainly has no filler. Who said that? Who?

I still say when the CD turns to Solid Gold, Stake & Sabre and Sufferin that there isnt a harder rocking 3 songs on any FBATC's disc. The drums on those 3 songs are amazing as is the guitarwork. I almost never listen to 1 of those songs unless I know I have time for all 3, they just go well together. |
