First let me say that this was my first Pixies concert, and it was great. I was too young to see them live their first time 'round.
During "Something Against You", Charles's guitar had some kind of malfunction - perhaps a broken string - and he had to put it down and sing without the guitar while the roadie attended to it. When the song was over, they stopped and started joking around. Charles said things like "What is the professional thing to do? Take 5 or tell jokes?" The audience started screaming "Jokes!", and so David told a joke. He said,
"Why did the beastialicist cross the road?" and Charles repeated that line a few times, mostly laughing at the word beastialicist. David's punchline was, "Because his dick was stuck in the chicken." He then gave his own joke the traditional "Tadump-thugh" on the drums.
Then Charles made Joey come to the mic to tell a joke, saying that no one knows what Joey sounds like. Joey VERY hesitantly went up to the mic and said something so softly that no one could hear what he was saying. Charles let him leave the mic, and said something like, "He's so quiet and I'm so loud."
Then they all just sort of stood there waiting for the guitar to be fixed, Charles semi-apologizing - talking about how they should have a backup plan but it's never happened before. He also commented about how he could see sweat dripping into the roadie's butt crack and then he mumbled something about the gurgling noise it was making. He also kept apologizing for throwing down the guitar, concerned that he broke it, but confident that a "telecaster can take it". I think it was a telecaster.
Kim, for her part, took the opportunity to ask the crowd, "Even though this is Camden, New Jersey, you're all from Philly, right?" to which the crowd (mostly) cheered. Charles responded with something like, "We're in New Jersey?" Yes, that's why the crowd kept cheering whenever New Jersey was mentioned, like in Vamos and in Monkey Gone to Heaven (however unflattering the references).
All in all, very funny little event. I hope that it stays on the live CD, if and when such a beast is ever made available for us poor Philly fans. I just wanted to relay it while it was still mostly fresh in my mind - I'm off to bed!

I was there too, my first show ever being only 15, and it was incredible. The little jokes section was actually one of the best parts of the show, showing the chemistry between the band. Joey refused to give a joke but more than made up for it with his beating guitar with a drumstick and robot act for the second half of Vamos. Kim actually said "We're in Deleware?" I thought DiscLive was doing all shows, but was extremely dissapointed when I couldn't find I booth. Picked myself up a hoody and a 5 dollar soda though. *Frank Black's guitar was a telecaster. Joey went through 3 Les Pauls. From what I saw, Kim stuck with the same bass. It looked like they couldn't get Frank's guitar fixed quickly so they went into the acoustic setlist starting with, In Heaven. It was funny, because it was halfway through "Something Against You", so during a vocal break he walked away, took it off, and went to singing, as Kim asked him "Does it feel weird without a guitar Charles?"
*Also they played a lot of Doolittle. I didn't expect them to play Mr. Grieves or I Bleed, my favorite songs off Doolittle.

I thought they were great last night. I am not sure if this show will show up anywhere since it was CC venue, but if it does I would love to get a copy.

They had two types there, both zip ups, one with PIXIES written across the front, and the other with the Trompe Le Monde "P" on the left side front, and Pixies written on the bottom of the back. Both were $40, T-Shirts were $20. I checked out pixiesdiscs.com and they're only selling Dec. 6 on. 2 days after the Camden show! If anyone finds this anywhere, don't if live shows off bittorrent are legal in this forum, AIM me or PM or something.

This being my first Pixies show ever, was a life changing event. It didn't matter that I had terrible seats, or that the two openers (The Bennies and The Datsuns) were terrible. I saw the Pixies last night. The show was better than I could have expected. The Pixies took the stage at 10:05, frank wearing a pair of shades, and looking cool as ever. To my disbelief they opened with Velouria, which I was hoping they would play. The rest of the set just slipped by, and I have trouble remembering what songs were played; the whole event just seems like a whirlwind of Pixies. Lucky me, I have December 11th at Hammersteins to look forward to now. I can't wait.
I will never say the word procrastinate again, I'll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed. |

This was my first too, it was incredible. I was surprised they opened with Velouria too, I lost a 1 dollar bet that they'd open with Bone Machine.

Yeas--it was an awesome show. This was my first Pixies show ever as well. The last chance I had to see them was when they toured with U2 back in 92. It sold out b4 I got tix. :( We were in the VERY BACK ROW of the entire venue!!!! I was initially pissed (for 6 months) that I got these tix--as good tix have been available for months after buying these. But the good news was--even though we were in the back--the distance from the stage wasnt "that"bad. And we were able to stand on our seats and lean back against the wall. It was a beautiful view--a see of happy Pixie-ites before us and the sound at that height was crystal clear, compared to sitting in our seats.
Was a dream fulfilled. |

I heard "come on" only, like as a reply "Come on, Charles, don't make me do this." My friend said he heard Frank Sinatra though so I guess that was his joke. People say he's quiet, and they mean it. Not that he doesn't talk a lot, it's that when he does you can barely hear him. He had a microphone which Charles was bursting ear drums with, but with no crowd noise you still couldn't hear him. And he didn't even try to do a Frank Sinatra impression with it, but David's joke was good. Joey more than made up for it with the robot to his guitar in the center of the stage along with the music.

it may have been a "come on" type of reply because he didn't have an actual punchline...

This was my first ever Pixies show. I barely slept the night before. It was like a kid the night before Christmas. I was wide awake till about 3 am.
The next day rolls around and we are on our (late) way to the Trenton RiverLine. We get there right as the 7:15 trains is leaving. No big deal really. We didn't really care for the Datsuns or whatever. So, we wait around till 7:30 and the train pulls up. We get on and are waiting for departure when I casually ask...
"You got the tickets, right Amanda?" "No..." "No, seriously." "No, I'm serious. I don't have the tickets."
Fuck. I can't even describe how I felt. I started flipping out. We all run off the train to the car. Not there. We run back and forth and start tearing apart the car looking for the tickets. It's exactly 7:42 when my friend yells "I got them!". The tickets were left on top of a train ticket buying station. We jump on the train and the second we jump on, it starts moving.
It was the craziest thing ever. So many bad things could have happened. We could of got on the 7:15 without the tickets, we could have got on the train and halfway there realized we didn't have them. It honesty works me up just thinking about it. We ending up getting there and had about 45 mins. to spare before they went on. We were in sect. 104 but snuck up to second row from stage (!). I was so close I could see the sweat dripping off Frank's forehead. It was the best thing ever. Seriously. If you haven't seen these guys, you have to. I have to see them again.

I was at the show too. Wepeel, you were correct on the joke. I thought it was hilarious for two reasons: 1) I've heard it before so I knew what Joey was saying 2) I'm a jackass with a bad sense of humor.
Joey: Knock Knock Audience: Who's there? Joey: Frank Sinatra Audience: Frank Sinatra who? Joey: (in a sleazy jazzy Sinatra voice) Come on.
It's one of those jokes that's so not funny that it's funny... or not. Although I love that the Pixies are all business with their song-song-song-song format with little to no talking, it was nice to see them slow down and actually hear their voices.
One of the big highlights was Joey's solo on "Vamos", intense, funny and inspiring all at the same time. Another was Kim singing "In Heaven" with a sparse, simple arragement of mostly just her & Joey. Then again, every song was a highlight so I'll stop there.
This was my first Pixies show and it was a truly amazing experience. I had been waiting fifteen years to see them. I went with my wife who's eight-months pregnant. The baby was kicking like crazy so we think it was starting a little mosh pit. We also bought a little toddler Pixies T-shirt for our two-year-old so we've got a well rounded Pixies family. |
