I'm going to Saturday's show in montreal and I decided to google both opening acts (Marble Index; Datsuns) to get an idea of what was in store...and then it occurred to me after listening to a few tunes on their website and looking at some pics (that they were yet again some MC5, Stooges and Who reincarnations with a 2004 "Urban" look)
.....wow, these really are the modern day equivalent of many of the image driven soft-metal bands of the 80s, the very same kinda bands that discovering the Pixies saved me from. It just seems kinda odd that we have to sit thru two 'flaky' bands before getting to see the people I've come to admire for bringing the music and not the 'Hair and Leather'...
...I'll wear the earplugs for the first two and let loose for what I really came to hear.
Does anyone else out there find the choice of opening acts kinda odd too?

The Bennies and Mission Of Burma are opening for the Lowell shows,
which is very exciting. If you haven't heard of Mission before and
love the Pixies... well, what'er you waiting for?
One album, sure, but a fuck all out album.
Though I have to agree, both Marble Index and Datsuns are nonexistent in my collection. Yuk. |

I saw the second Toronto show and thought that Marble Index were OK. Really didn't like the Datsuns, though. Pretty much just a hard rock band in the vein of AC/DC, but contributing nothing new or interesting. A few people in the audience seemed really into them, but I didn't get the impression that held for most people.
I'll have to see how Ottawa/Gatineau reacts to the same bands tonight.
How did they go over in Montreal?

Very Well.....but I'd have to say that I didn't like both opening bands, but Marble Index were the better of the two......but like you said (and I was also thinking AC/DC), Datsuns arent contributing anything new, the guitarists are very remeniscent of 80s hair/soft metal bands = stupid.

Yeah, the Marble Index were alright. The Datsuns just didn't fit the mood with the rest of the music. The Pixies were the opposite of hair metal in the 80s, which is what this band is trying to recreate. Either way, it was worth waiting through 30 minutes of their set for the Pixies.

i got the walkmen in chicago, which was awesome. they're a fantastic, fresh band. check them out if you haven't.

afterwards we got Bettie Serveert as an afterparty
but I couldn't get into the small club

Datsun in St. Paul. Didn't see because band-Web-site samples of songs were boring. There's so many vaguely modish bands that sound like this. I saw "The Pattern" once and nearly barfed. I really would have preferred someone cooler.
Dave Thomas and the Pale Boys toured my town a few days earlier. Now *that* would have been interesting. |

I was at camden dec 5th and I saw the Bennies. The Bennies were real fuckin nice man. then the Datsuns came on.... I decided to give them a chance but then I got one look at them and we Fled to the pretzel stand where we hung out and tried not to listen either-cause ,ho by the way, The Datsuns sucked man. I hate these retro70-80s bands whos songs all sound the same. ....
But too end on a good note The Bennies were fuckin nice man

I'll just reprint what I said in the 12/12 thread:
The Datsuns are far and away the most inappropriately matched opening band I've EVER seen. 70's-metal preening and posturing, all songs about girls and guitars, no variance, no originality. The only entertaining bit was watching one of their moms (I think?) standing in the wings furiously pantomiming that they had to be offstage in fifteen minutes. I picked up the free DVD sampler some guy was handing out, just so I could waste their money like they wasted mine. |

Mission of Burma have 3 albums! and they're all up to snuff...I've only heard a few songs off their new record but it sounds jsut as good. Definitely check them out

Oh man, it was. BSS did an AMAZING set with the entire band (inumerable guitars, horns, percussion) at Hammerstein Ballroom NYC on 12/14. What a great chance to get turned onto a band like this, loved every tune and had never heard a note of it before. A perfect double bill.
The Bennies deserve props too, really cool set at Camden on 12/05. Great songs with memorable riffs.
Unfortunately The Datsuns just didn't cut it at the Camden show. They're trying to spin a garage/Alt rep but when you play that stuff through Marshall amps it sounds like warmed over Thin Lizzy. Buy these boys some Vox AC30's or hip them to the fact that if you're gonna do 70's gonzo rock you must embrace your inner Black Oak Arkansas or Blockrock genes like Monster Magnet do.
Pixies were killer at Hammerstein, smoking gig. Frank's acoustic guitar troubles at Camden NJ kinda derailed that one.
Two Pixies gigs in less than two weeks - THIS monkey's gone to Heaven.

Thanks for responding - I figured that BSS would be much better than the Datsun's (who I had to suffer through in St. Paul). They seriously had a horn section too? Wish I got to see it! Odd how there aren't any more reviews of the Dec. 14 show on this board |

i was pretty disappointed with the support acts i saw. i caught mission of burma a few years ago at the ATP festival in the uk and they were pretty good in a small venue, but looked and sounded out of place in the hammerstein. as for mike watt, it was the worst pile of shit ive heard coming out of speakers at a gig. absolutely appauling shit. the only person i saw liking it was a bald old guy in leather in front of me.
as for BSS, i saw their 12/15 show at the bowery which was incredible. they played for nearly 3 hours and sounded amazing. must say it rivaled the pixies 12/16 for best show of the year.

I liked 50 foot wave alot cause kirsten hersh is great and also helped start the pixies so i think it was a fitting opening band
