Now when people ask you who the Pixies are, the answer is simple: "You mean you've never heard of them? They did the 410th best song ever."

Bill you are right.

Any one else think it's a little trick at RS getting some cheap publicity? How convenient that their TOP song is Like a Rolling Stone... this coming from a Dylan fan...

Well, stastically this whole survey doesn't amount to much. Due to the small size of things, this survey really doesn't have the sample size to be statistically significant. This is a snapshot and a general indication what a select group of people feel is the top songs. Also, the listings, done in a somewhat simlar fashion as I did for Pixies songs (minus the weighted average) just gives a slight indication about what people think. I didn't do the weighted average, beacause, I don't think in most cases the ranking between one slot vs. the other really holds that much significance.

The other huge hole in the presentation of results is that it doesn't let the reader know to what degree the song won. For example did the first song recieve 50 more votes than the second one? Was it a clear winner or did it barely eek it out?

I would have liked to see a list of the people that were voting to get a better indication of the thinking and demographics behind these numbers.

Further, I would also like a feel about the ages of those voting. From what I could see, the vast majority of songs were before 1970. If the voting group skus older-- this would hurt more contemporary bands. Also, these older songs have an unfair advantage in the sense that they have more years to build brand equity, mindshare and general popularity.

Like the vote we did here on the fourm... what hurts the Pixies in this sort of thing is that their catalogue is well known... I would assume that the Pixie vote was fragmented against a range of songs...so that hurts the chances of Pixies being ranked higher.

Next time RS does something like this, I would hope that they would hire a statistitian to help design this study because then it would carry more weight and be more accurate. It's pretty irresponsible and misleading to do this and publish these results as the gosple. At best, this is a slight indication of what they deem the musical elite think... not an accurate representation of top songs as a whole.

The sad thing is a list like this does have the potential of influencing play lists and music purchases. RS should have been more responsible.

It's not even interesting enough to comment upon. These "greatest songs" lists are a dime-a-dozen and seem to come out every few months. They're nothing more than marketing stunts to generate some cheap word of mouth about whatever shitty magazine has a list out at any given time. They all take turns too. Next moth Spin will have theirs, the following month Blender, the month after that, oh, I don't know, maybe Us or People. Or Swank. They mean nothing! Zero! As for The Pixies' inclusion, it's kind of sad to see them on there at all. I guarantee you that they weren't on any of these lists last year or the year before that and the songs were every bit as good then as they are now. Unfortunately though, the reunion tour has gotten them just enough buzz to make appearances on lists like this inevitable for the next year or two. Do you think they'll be number 409 next time or maybe 373? Do you think Velouria is better than Be True to Your School? Think Bone Machine should be ranked higher than She Bop? Who gives a Christ! Mr. Blackwell's worst-dressed lists have more credibility!

Numbers of songs included in the top 100 by decade:

1950s: 20
60s: 54
70s: 17
80s: 7
90s: 2

For what it's worth, Monkey Gone To Heaven is/was the 41st best song of the '80s according to the list.

This thread is the reason why Rolling Stone (and other magazines and websites) do these lists. They want us to run to the internet and talk about them. It's easy publicity. If you think there's lots of heavy consideration behind these lists we get each month, you're kidding yourself.

Thanks New Bolero, you are right on.

Maybe Nimrod's son will be in the top 10. Maybe then Kelly Clarson or Troy Aiken will cover it. (puke)

Chris Knight...thanks for classifying those 100 songs by decade. That was interesting to see.

The other thing about the methodology I question... is how were the people (if they were at all) instructed to list the questions. One of the things I did when doing the pixies survey... was either to to have people to come up with answers off the top of their head (unaided recall) or to look online or on cds to come up with tob songs (aided recall)... if you don't specify... it definately muddies your results. But like Bolero put it... it's all just a marketing stunt.

You're right... people love lists and that's why they buy these things. It's also true for rankings of the top colleges or gradschools or what ever... it's a big marketing stunt. I never once thought that these people at RS were putting thought into it and I really don't think any one here was either. I was just questioning it and hopefully sharing with others what a load of crap it was... I just like calling them out for what they are...a slick mag that has little if nothing to do with real music... especially music of today.

I think your math is a bit off. I only gave it a cursory glance, but I noticed 4 Nirvana songs (Teen Spirit, All Apologies, In Bloom, Come As You Are), a Pixies song (Monkey), a Radiohead song (Paranoid Android), a Metallica song (Enter Sandman), a GnR song( Paradise City), Pavement song (Summer Babe), a Beck song (Loser), and a Beasite Boys song (Sabotage), all from the 90s.

Keep in mind that, by posting this thread, I'm not necessarily saying that I agree with the list or even that I think the list has any objective meaning.

When considering whether or not the list is skewed toward older songs, I think it's interesting to note that 1956 produced 20 of the "500 greatest songs ever" and 1957 produced 19.

In comparison, the thirteen (13) years from 1992-2004 produced only 16.

Of course, just picking out a few songs at random from the list, it's easy to argue with the rankings. Is "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand) by the Shangri-Las really 42 spots better than their other song in the rankings, "Leader of the Pack"? Is their lasting impact even comparable?

For the Shirelles, "Tonight's the Night" (ranked at 401) made it into the top 40 when it was released, but Soldier Boy, absent from the rankings, was a #1 record.

Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" made the list.

(These may seem like strange observations to make, but I happened to be looking at the "S" section when I started typing)

That's one of the dumbest lists I've ever had the displeasure of reading. They certainly left out a lot of bands in my opinion, by having dozens of songs by the same artist. And they didn't include Thriller, I mean, come on.

:) WTF? I just tried checking by changing the pull down menu to artist and looking for the Ramones... it is a screwed up... not in alpha order. It makes me wonder if they might have had errors in compounding the data.

I got an email the other day from Real Rhapsody. They are marketing it to the hilt. A online radio station playing the tunes, you can buy cds, play the play list. If you ask me this was just one big marketing effort of getting some of these baby boomers to buy this stuff and subscribe to Real Rhapsody. It's one thing to sell out it's another to sell your soul entirely... RS back in the day used to be cool and respectable.

Did anyone catch the Dylan interview on 60 mins?

Ed Bradley brought up the RS award...Bob Dylan was self efacing and when pressed said something to the effect that it was a pat on the back for this week. It kinda made me feel sad for knocking this survey... b/c Bob Dylan is amazing. I just don't think Rolling Stone is his best tune... Lay Lady Lay or Baby Blue or Tangled up in You are some of my personal faves.

But they said Bob Dylan is up for a nobel Prize in literature... I hope he gets it... and then maybe Frank Black can get it some day too.
