got to go to a special screening of this tonight. Wes Anderson was supposed to be there for a Q and A afterwards but didn't make it :( Mark Mothersbaugh was there for the Q and A though... as were the producer, editor, visual effects supervisor and some other people.
i don't want to ruin it for anyone so i won't go into too much detail. i will say i'm a huge Wes Anderson fan. i even brought my RUSHMORE poster (normally in a frame in my kitchen) in hopes of getting it signed, that's how nerdy i am.
the movie has his trademark visual style - very handcrafted and precise. i've heard that he's obsessively involved in EVERY aspect of his films. even going to the art department and hand painting things with them.. i don't know what to say without ruining it, but i will say the movie is a lot of fun and i enjoyed it - but i don't think it tops RUSHMORE. if you're a Wes Anderson fan you'll love it. if you're not, you may not.
i have a theory that the best Wes Anderson work is when he's collaborating with Owen Wilson in the writing process, but that's a different story.
music choices are excellent. one of the actors in the film, Seu Jorge (a singer/songwriter from Brazil) sings Bowie songs in Portuguese throughout the film, and Bowie songs are a huge part of the film in general. you'll see..
one cool thing from the Q and A that Mothersbaugh talked about: he said that in every movie they've worked on they make some kind of reference to the previous movie, musically.
in this one, one of the music cues is a cue from ROYAL TENENBAUMS played backwards. they tried it just for fun and liked it.
still letting the movie sink in.. but, for now, i definitely say go see it.

i'm pretty much ensured to be dissappointed as i feel that the royal tenenbaums is (quite possibly) the best movie of the decade so far. i am very much looking forward to this, but rushmore, bottle rocket and tenenbaums all are near perfect in my mind, so i'm trying to knock down my expectations so that i'm not dissappointed when it doesn't live up.

David Bowie´s songs in portuguese, I must listen that, although in Brazil the portuguese is very different, it´s almost like if they sing instead of talk. Thanks for posting that Floop!

Sorry Floop. Wes was at my place making maple syrup quesadillas. He said that I'd enjoy the movie, so that's two people I've heard it from.

I saw a preview for this last week when I went to the movies and people actually APPLAUDED THE PREVIEW. I never experienced that before. I can't wait for this movie. Thanks, floop.

Haven't they all been a collaboration? they write it together, Wes directs, Owen acts. Bottle and Rushmore they definately wrote together. |

the first three movies were co-written by Wes and Owen. but LIFE AQUATIC was co-written with Noah Baumbach. with Owen being too busy with other projects

oh I never heard of this before. firstrate.

Moving from the clown to the jester will mean moving from similar to same, from alike to identical, from comparable to analogous. Though applied differently, the colours used on one can be used on another, and a couple of changes of costume will rapidly transform the jester into a clown and the clown into a jester. Strictly speaking, they almost duplicate each other as regards clothes and function, the only difference between them, from a social point of view, is that clowns do not usually visit the palaces of kings. |
