I picked this up yesterday and it's pretty awesome, though I was disappointed by the lack of a live show. There's so much material that I've never heard on LA's Desert Origins. The recordings of Crooked Rain-era material w/ Gary Young are fun to hear, especially since Malkmus makes comments in the middle of so many songs, like, "This sounds like Husker Du" or something like that. I get a big kick out of the end of "Same Way of Saying" where Malkmus talks about his feelings on having a child and maybe some day he'd like to "fuck a woman and make one," but he doesn't have "a real steady job." It's so direct for Malkmus that it's bizarre.

Spiral Stairs has a song on there that invokes me, Tartar Martyr. I may have to start a blog or a Pretty Crabby site with that as my address.

Man, I can't wait for Wowee Zowee.

I was listening to Crooked Rain today, but have yet to hear about this special edition... Pavement are a great amd and Malkmus is a semi genius.

This is a high class bureau de change, not some Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Margate!

You're right about Malkmus being a genius. I would also have to include David Berman whose Silver Jews with Malkmus on guitar equaled and even surpassed Pavement on American Water at least. I read Malkmus was disillusioned after helping on American Water when it turned out to be a much better record than Terror Twilight (Malkmus' opinion). Berman's lyrics are gold.

That's interesting. I haven't heard the Silver Jews, though I very much like Pavement's cover version of Secret Knowledge of Backroads. Silver Jews records are out of print, aren't they?

No... at least not as of early 2003. My roommate bought Starlite Walker then. There's some excellent songs on that record. I have the Arizona record but that is so lo-fi. It makes Pavement's early singles sound like Boston.

Of course you mentioned Malkmus saying he'd marry you, Mel. You bring it up every chance you get! Don't blame you, though, he's something else... and I'm a straight guy!
