Frank Black Francis: FRANK BLACK FRANCIS

by Craig Nordemann

After nearly two decades, that quirky pop genius Charles Thompson (AKA Frank Black, AKA Black Francis) has proven yet again why he and the Pixies are one of moden music’s most important bands on this new two disc release, Frank Black Francis, courtesy of the folks at Sonic Unyon.

The first disc contains acoustic demos by a young Charles, days before the sessions where tracks from the first two Pixies releases were recorded in 1987. The second disc is comprised of new interpretations of Pixies standards, where Thompson is accompanied by folk experimentalists the Two Pale Boys who are best known to Pixies/Frank Black fans for their contributions to Black’s 2003 release, Show Me Your Tears.

But beware if you’re looking to discover what all the fuss is about: this record definitely is not for you. If you’re just starting to get into the Pixies, run down to your local recordshop and get your dirty little hands on Doolittle or Surfer Rosa/Come on Pilgrim.

As Thompson states in the liner notes, there are concerns with the quality of his early demos as well as his perceived reaction to the re-recording of classic Pixies tunes: some might feel that Thompson’s new versions may misrepresent his band to a new audience. But regardless, the Pixies’ charming brand of pop stands strong on both of Frank Black Francis’ discs. This album will surely be a hit with people whose Pixies albums have melted to their CD players from excessive playing.

I think they play on Manitoba, not under the 2 Pale Boys name though.
