Thanks Apl. We're on the same page.

As counterintuitive or futile as it might seem, now is the time more than ever to become active on the left.

The right is more powerful than ever now. We must not lie down. We must become more active, more visible and in some cases, more radical.

I pledge that I will become more active locally. One immediate thing is becoming involved in a new local chapter of a forest defense group.

Write letters, call congressmen, be informed. If you're radical, more treesitting, more marches, more activism. Be careful, but firebombing a few SUVs never hurt anyone either..except for the guy that is facing life for it.

What I mean is that I'm going to do more and risk more. What will you do?

Hell yeah!

I was reading through the "Democracy for America" site all last night. Those folks are a beacon of real hope. www.democracyforamerica.com

I plan on spending *at least* 30 minutes to an hour of every day doing something constructive towards enacting change. Sounds like very little, but it will eventually have an exponential effect. I plan on doing more to calm my nerves and center myself, and I have finally decided to listen to the sage advice:

"What you do in a 24 hour period is who you are."

I swear I didn't even notice who won in KY, KSR. My family is there. What's up?

(P.S. I know you were joking, but take heed. Things aren't so open these days:

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/KY/P/00/index.html

Jim Bunning (R) kept his senate seat.
Jefferson and a few other counties (like Rowan where I live) favored Kerry and Mongiardo. Much more Mongiardo support than Kerry. We really wanted Bunning gone, but alas - it was not to be.
I hope Dr Dan sticks around - we'll stick him in the congress somewhere in '06.

I'm gonna point the way to this site with transcript of speech by US senator who waved Library of Congress documents to show your electoral process has been little more than a diverting piece of theatre since 1933. If it's any consolation, so is ours.

http://www.the7thfire.com/Politics%20and%20History/TraficantUSBankrupt.html

I've posted about this before to no reply, but it was in the form of a not very compact rant. I'd like to know what you lot think of this.

Well, did anyone participate in the Million Worker March that took place a short while back? (The AFL-CIO would not support it. Wanted to place all effort into backing Kerry...)

Worthwhile, but a bit of a flop.

-

Difficult to be a go treesitting or march when you're working 8.5 (or 9, 10, 11, 12..) hours a day. Difficult to donate money to worthy causes when you're earning far less than you're worth.

-

The I.W.W. is a group I've belonged to for a few years now.

Once a truly radical labor union. Still retains the ideology, but is having some diffuculty putting much of anything into practice right now.

Colorful history, somewhat uncertain near future.

Well, it looks as though the guy that typed a "transcript" is also in prison at the time he made that page, according to the forwarding address at the bottom of the page.

Traficant was a notorious wacko that committed quite a few illegal acts that got him into prison. Unless there is an official or otherwise credible source for this supposedly now-"doctored" speech, I'm afraid I can't speak to your question.

I decided the other day that I no longer fear death. I have thought about going to college just to learn...not necessarily get a degree, but to learn about economics, political science, and history. I've had this idea for a while of writing up a little mini pamphlet with different topics every month or something...basically, just my theories and opinion...stuff like that. I want to become more active in the Democratic party as well.

I guess I just wasn't made for these times.

well sheesh, guys, I don't care if you trust Traficant or not, I meant take a looksee through your grand library of public records for the invocation of the Emergency Banking Act, March 9, 1933, 48 Stat. 1, Public Law 89-719. There are official documents to be found in the Library of Congress, I'm guessing.

But it has just occurred to me that maybe since the guy accused the government of lying to its people for 70odd years, requiring official documents as criteria for proof might be like something out of a Joseph Heller book.

I used to see Jim Traficant on CSPAN occasionally. The guy was riveting, and IMO a true patriot in the 18th century spirit of the word. I never heard anything from him that made me think of him as a "wacko," but I wasn't the least bit surprised when I found out he was going to prison. The US government tolerates free speech only to the point that it actually starts to have an impact on the status quo. Traficant is probably lucky to still be alive.

I've petered out a bit.

I have written a few letters to the editor, played a fundraiser for the forest activist group, but honestlyand sadly that is about it.

Now we have the senate pushing drilling in anwar, logging in old growth starting out west...not to mention all the sneakey shit that is probably going on behind closed doors.

Call me a hypocrite and beat me with a wet noodle.

So, needless to say, if you were waiting around with five bucks in your hand waiting to buy my upcoming brochure Understanding Poop, you can put that five bucks away, 'cause it ain't happenin.

Same boat as the rest of you.

Most of my "activism" is through money donations to groups I identify with.

-

Still a member of the IWW. An unsurprising number of co-workers (especially screeners) identify with the IWW, but feel since we work for a rather iffy dept. of the Gov't (DHS) it would be fairly hypocricitcal to voice much support.

-

Trying to remain a, um, responsible consumer. When I cannot grow/make something myself I shop union and buy natural/local.

I do a little letter writing, but don't really feel it goes anyplace. I did get a fairly personal response from my VA House Rep, though. (Re: A bill involving credit unions.) That was nice.

Take a bite of the chocolate coffin.

Had some serious changes in priority, currently redoubling our efforts to move back home, be closer to friends and family, and contribute to the community in various ways.

We finally joined the ACLU, gave to blackboxvoting.org, and made some simple changes in the way that we live and what we spend our time on (for exapmle, we hardly ever watch tv anymore - instead we spend more time in our respective studios being creative). Nothing huge, but I think it's gradual shifts in behavior that happen naturally and flexibly that will work best for me. The cynical/hopefull cycle is still there - and probably always will be. I am starting to realize that the way I feel or what I think on a daily basis about the general state of the world and the arguments over human nature/powers that be etc are all irrelevant when it comes down to it - if I can do something that is beneficial, then that's something where there was nothing before, where I used to just think and be negative (paranoid/overwhelmed/depressed) and *not do*.
