I have had a few friends who have been to Nepal some time ago, and said that it was a beautiful country. However, there has been a struggle between the Maoist Rebels and the government during the past few years, and at times it has been deemed unsafe for tourists.

I am actually really interested in living out there for a year or so and teaching English. So, has anyone been out there recently? If so please can you reply here and tell me about your experiences, or drop me an email as I am very interested.

Cheers

Stuart

hey Stu. A friend of mine who works for a travel company informs me that a lot of tour companies are cancelling trips there because of the recent problems - although it will hopefully die down after a while. Fingers crossed for ya.

Phew. Thanks, floop. Plus you couldn't write Maoists correctly, which makes you look even more ridiculous.

hey, floop, on a side note, you never gave Mel your Wilco speech in the thread where she asked about it the other day. Perhaps you didn't see it. I was looking forward to you ripping on them. I was disappointed you didn't.

No, please name them again. I didn't have any good downloading access at the time. I know I'd heard of at least one of them. I really do want to check them out. I just wasn't able to get around to it at the time.

I was watching a program recently about Nepal. A couple of Israeli backpackers were interviewed, who had been stopped by Maoists out on their trek, and they they claimed that the Maoists treated them well. However they charged the trekkers 1,000 Rupees each (and gave them a receipt) which ensured a safe passage on their journey. 1,000 Nepalese Rupees is about 8 quid.

Also, the majority of the trouble has been occurring in the country, not in the cities.... mind you I'd want to visit the country as often as I could. Hmm.... maybe if I go I will take my red book of communism, just in case. My mates who went about 3 years ago reckoned it wasn't that dangerous, but might need to find out more info before I make a decision.
