Hmmmmmmmm interesting! One of my favorite films, but I've always thought it could have been that little bit better????
The atmoshere is spot on......I just always have been left wanting that tiny bit more.
On the whole I detest remakes!! |

I am not sure about this either. It's one of my favourite horror movies. Who is making the new one? The link has expired.
Help me! He keeps making me post!

I haven't seen a director name yet - Revolution Studios bought the rights and JC will produce. Some guy named Cooper Layne is writing (or rewriting) the script.
While looking this up I found something interesting: Frank Darabont is going to direct a "miniseries sequel" to The Thing for the SciFi Channel. Info here: http://www.geocities.com/j_nada/carp/

Nope, the "remake" story morphed into the "miniseries sequel" story.
After all, "The Thing" was already a remake (or a new adaptation from the same short story).

Yeah that's what I thought. I don't think anyone could better it with a remake. Thanks for the info.

Carpenter wants to do a sequel to The Thing, I beleve. I watched Christine again recently..."Here's to all the shitters of the world!", or whatever he says. Actually, the video for Radiohead's Karma Police seems in part to pay homage to the scene where the car is on fire and chasing the guy down the road.Hmmmmm. |

Agreed, Mike - you can't better "The Thing". I hope I'll get to see that miniseries, though.
On a side note, I recently played a "survival horror" video game named Obscure, and it was obvious that the creature designs drew heavily from Rob Bottin's work on that film.

The Thing game was pretty good. A lot of movies/comics/games etc. were probably inspired by the movie. Its funny, it came out a couple of years after Alien, which kinda kick-started the horror-science fiction-crossover thing. Although of course Carpenter's movie is a remake of an old film. Rob Bottin's effects work is great-he did the exploding head effect for Fight Club, actually. Although I think there was some CGI enhancement to that. |

I'd say the horror-science-fiction crossover thing was pretty much kick-started in the nineteen-thirties by one Howard Phillips Lovecraft :)
I believe both Alien and The Thing have quite a strong Lovecraftian flavour, inasmuch as they carry the sense of the futility of human endeavours in an infinite, cold, indifferent universe. And the indescribable horrors Bottin created for The Thing are probably the first example of a convincing visual version of HPL's "unspeakable" slimey beings from outer space.

The Stuart Gordon adaptation Dagon is pretty good, actually. I've never read any of his books, but I'm familiar with some his themes.Speaking of influences, someone in Metallica must have had a bit of a Lovecraft obsession-the instrumental entitled Call Of Ctulu, and Thing That Should Not Be(with it's references to the great old ones, etc.)There was also a Call Of Ctulu role-playing game. |
