| to drive from LA to Atlanta in 4 days - over 3500kms? Toying with the idea of seeing a new years eve gig that is just slightly out of my way. C'mon lovely American FB.netters, you've got a better idea if this is possible than my european counterparts. |

Though I haven't done the trip, I've done a similar one in three days (LONG days), so 4 days is doable, but you will be driving a LOT. Like the whole time. It won't be all that enjoyable, and for the gas money/miles on your rent-a-car, you might be better off to hop a cheap flight (though that could be a trick at that time of year). But then you get to see the American countryside on the ground at least. Which, probably, will mostly be desert.

| Of course a long drive can be great but it's a pity you'll have to rely on the interstate highways to make time. I almost always avoid those if at all possible. The wonder lies mostly on the back roads and state highways. If you find any time at all, take the longer way when you can, especially in the southwest to cruise through regions featuring national parks. |

i've done LA to Baltimore (twice) and did it in 4 days. but we're talking 10-12 hour days, driving fast.
if you're on vacation, i wouldn't recommend it because you'll have no time to stop and do stuff. which you should if you're on vacation. don't ruin a good road trip just to make a show.

| We've got 3 weeks - so at the moment it looks like week one = drive like the devil and then next two weeks take a lazy way back to LA, giving us time to check out Savannah and various National Parks. |

There's not a whole lot of National Parks between Atlanta and LA until you get to Arizona and there's a whole lot of boring miles (especially on the Interstates, like erebus said). And, I hope your not doing this with a rental car. That might be pretty expensive, since you are likely to exceed the miles limit.
Forget driving to Atlanta and spend a two weeks driving up the Pacific coast (spend a few days in the Bay Area). Or throw caution to the wind and head for Baja.

I think we are all saying the same thing. I'm all about the road trip, but this sounds like it might be too much road and not enough trip. Or something like that. Dean, *who is not even American*, put it best. So yeah, listen to the Canadian. For reals.

darwin makes a good point.
don't get me wrong, a Southwest Santa Fe trip would be excellent. but driving up the coast is beautiful. and you can not go wrong with checking out San Francisco (and all the cool cities along the way).. whereas "Scatlanta" (as my friends call it) is possibly less of a must-see city.
going down to Mexico would make more sense since it'll be december. but you have to be careful down there.
if you do go the Southwest National Park route, i can not recommend Zion National Park enough. sooooooooooooo cool. one of the best camping trips i've ever been on. the most amazing edge-of-cliff hikes you'll ever take. it's like the Grand Canyon only cliffs.
they do have motels around there too.

| I don't know...if you're going to do the lazy trip on the way back, I say go for it. When I moved to L.A., from Richmond, Va, I took the Greyhound. They were running a $39 special. Even if parts of the trip are dull as hell, there's something about spanning the continent by ground. You'll make fun of the boredom, I'm sure- listening to bad C&W stations, keeping yourself wired on diner coffee, playing car games like snug bug. The Greyhound ran straight through and it took two days. |

Thanks for all the suggestions - I've already done a Pacific coast trip a couple of years ago - my best holiday ever! I am not ashamed to say I bawled my eyes out when I had to leave and spent the following year trying to figure out a way to move to San Francisco.
Floop - Zion is one of the reasons we first decided on LA to Sante Fe. I think one of the problems is that my buddy and I are completely over excited about so many things that trying to narrow it all down into 3 weeks is going to be really difficult. I think we're going to try find some more gig listings and hopefully find more gigs along our original intended route that will keep us happy. |

Hey, some folk will take the dirt road from Koffiefontein to Bloemfontein for a Beeskraal gig. Just you make sure the band you're planning to see isn't into concertina punk too.

On old teacher of mine told a story of a couple of brit friends of his that had a tradition of driving across the country (GB) every year as a vacation sort of thing - just something they did every year for fun.
They came to the US and decided that they would do the same here. The teacher warned them against it, but the brits stood their ground.
It was not the UK 'pub crawl' that they had anticipated...I don't remember if they made it or not.

| I did the Atlanta to La trip with 2 other friends in the car and we drove straight through only stopping for gas and did the trip in 30.5 hours. So I say go for it. |

I've driven across the US maybe 10 times and there's not much romantic about the truck stops, gas stations, and McDonald's that you will see on the Interstates. Especially when you spend a whole day trying to get across Texas. |

you can always improvise, but if you get your plans laid out soon, you should make reservations for Zion. the place we stayed (i think it's the main one) is one of the nicest campgrounds i've ever stayed in. and, if you don't want to camp, there are cabins and hotels nearby.
