JOHN PEEL has died of a heart attack aged 65.
The broadcasting legend, who had a career spanning over 40 years, was on holiday in Peru when he was taken ill.
A statement has been issued by the BBC which reads: "It has been confirmed that BBC radio broadcaster John Peel died from a heart attack last night whilst on holiday in Peru. He leaves behind his wife Sheila and four children."
Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said "John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death as are all who work at Radio 1. John’s influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades and his contribution to modern music and music culture is immeasurable.
"Hopeful bands all over the world sent their demo tapes to John knowing that he really cared. His commitment and passion for new music only grew stronger over the years. In fact, when I last saw him he was engaged in a lively debate with his fellow DJs over the state of new music today. He will be hugely missed. "
BBC Director of Radio & Music Jenny Abramsky added "John Peel was a unique broadcaster whose influence on Radio 1 could be felt from its very first days. He nurtured musicians and listeners alike introducing them to new sounds. His open minded approach to music was mirrored by his equally generous approach to his audience when he went to Radio 4 to present Home Truths.
"He had a remarkable rapport with all his listeners. Everyone at BBC Radio is devastated by the news. John is simply irreplaceable. Our hearts go out to Sheila and his children."
Peel was born in Heswall near Chester and started his radio career in Dallas, Texas.
Throughout the 1960s he worked at a number of radio stations across the US, before returning to Radio London in 1967.
Over a career spanning 40 years Peel consistently championed new music, and in 1994 was given the NME Godlike Genius award for his services to music.
I cant believe it, I think i am in shock. You just think he's going to be around forever dont you. Its sorta like a whole era has ended.
My thoughts are with his family.

so very very sad indeed. Peelie was a great great man. I remember back in the late 80's when I was doing my fanzine, and sent him copies to plug on air. He wrote back to me on one occasion, asking which track was which.. on the back of a Steve Wright Radio 1 pic.

This is sad. I never listened to his program (except maybe a few times on internet) and yet I feel he did a lot to help me build my musical culture.

I dont think there will be another man so greatly influential and prominant in moving the music industry, and opening it up to new things.
I say man, because when im all famous and running the entire industry, I will do so by Peels ethics.

i only know him from artists i like doing peel sessions - i don't believe beyond the little snippets before some tracks i'd ever heard him speak. that doesn't make it any less sad - the world has too few great broadcasters. R.I.P. Mr. Peel

Wow what sad news. It was amazing how much I learned from him about good bands due to the Peel Session Recordings of various artists. No one can take his place.

Looks like very new broadcasts only, but I'm not picky. What station was he on around 94? pretty sure I listened to him when I was living there then. |

It's very sad indeed. Peel really stood as one of those few islands of musical openness in a time when the radio was more a squelch box than anything. Many groups gained much-needed exposure through Peel and otherwise would've been shut out by the rest of radio. His contribution was great.

When I was a kid he was on the radio, as I got through those horrbile teenage years I listened in, when I moved home for the first time the guy I lived with and I would listen in, in bed, we got shellac that way and numerous others, I used to study to the session as an undergrad, when I worked friday nights I'd get back home in time for him on radio 4 - home truths, when I lived alone last year the radio was always on and now there's not going t be any more.
He was warm, he loved music none of this fucking dj playing what they're told bollocks, he battled jack white for obscure references, every band wanted to work with him, every one wanted to know him, he was funny he was passionate and he can never be replaced.
Just listening to the Radio1 news, oh god set me off again

I'm devastated.
I grew up listening to Peel. If it wasn't for him I'd never have heard 99% of the bands that I love so much, including the Pixies.

Isn't it scary that John Peel seemed to be one of the only DJ's in the business actually doing it for the love of music, and putting the effort in to find and play good new stuff.
The man was in a league of his own, 65 is too young.
I think a dedicatory 'Teenage Kicks' is in order - I hear they played it on Radio 1 when his death was announced.

John Peel played a big role in so many bands breaking through. allmusic.com has a few listed in Peel's bio: "This willingness to explore new directions and artists helped Peel break the careers of David Bowie, the Fall and the Smiths among others." Pavement is another band Peel played a huge role in setting into motion. Who knows if they would have ever done anything but Slay Tracks if Peel hadn't gotten his hands on a copy.

So true - I heard bands on his show that I'd never have heard anywhere else, some good, some bad, but at least he gave them their shot. |

on one hand i'm sad. on the other, he was very happy, he said he couldn't have hoped to have had such a good life, and visting a place he always wanted to go to when he passed away...
i raise my glass to him for living a great life and doing so much for music!

Peel is HUGE over here in the UK, and it's easy to see why/
even though he never directly influenced me when i was growing us, as i didn't grow up in the UK, he is a man of rare passion and integrity in the dire music industry.

it's scary to start thinking about the bands who wouldn't have made it if it weren't for him... of course you could never be sure, but he championed so many 'indie' (as in small unsigned) bands and gave so many their big breaks... a true music enthusiast right until the end apparently.

As a friend of mine said earlier today "John Peel is one of the few things I liked about the UK, now I'm just a homesick foreigner."
I'm shocked, tired and emotional. I feel truly sorry for any talented young band out there right now - there are so many he discovered. I wonder/dread who will possibly try and fill the gaping void he is going to leave in the music scene in the UK.
I also think it is a crying shame the BBC shifted his schedule to a later slot. One of his colleagues/old buddies was interviewed earlier today quoting him as saying working the late slot was killing him and he felt that he'd been marginalised by the BBC.

never threw away a demo, never not listened to a tape he got sent, had his house expanded to accomodate his expanding music collection, the man cared, the last media persona who did care about the music and not the bullshit around it. He was a happy man.
