Does anyone know why when they played Trompe le Monde, Frank played acoustic guitar, Kim played guitar, David played the shackers, and members of the late show band played bass and drums?? This has been bothering me for some time now. I NEED ANWSERS. |

Yeah, in fact, I've got the tape. It was of course, their touring for Trompe le Monde, and unfortunately I didn't write down the date on the tape. A few days, or even the next day, I'm not really sure, but soon thereafter they appeared on the Dennis Miller Show and I've got that on the same tape. On Dennis' show, he speaks to them about their upcoming tour with U-2. So, that pins down the date pretty good. As you recall, they played Trompe le Monde on Letterman. And you are correct about the lineup, Frank on accoustic, Kim on Accoustic, David on the shakers, one light colored and the other dark and slightly smaller (he is really shaking the hell out of them), Joey on electric guitar, and the Latenight band with Paul Shaffer on Keyboards, Anton Fig on Drums, Will _____ on bass, and ________ on guitar (I can't remember their names). Toward the end of the song, Paul plays a bluesy organ solo, followed by ________ with a guitar solo, and then Joey with a guitar solo that includes playing with both hands on the neck of the guitar similar to Eddie Van Halen. It's really quite a performance. Then, they do two songs on Dennis Miller. The first is Head On, which was written by William Reid and Jim Reid and is Trompe, and after the next guest they finish with Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons. Both really rock out. David is great on Head On. And Black Francis' voice on Bird Dream is the Bomb, "Spead leaving without warning, i need som place to sleep tonight, blowing in the rocking of the pines,...." Absolutely some of my favorite vocals by Charles. So deep and resonate. Wow, great flashback. You know, I got in a lot of trouble for making that tape. I used a tape that belonged to my wife and it had some important golf lesson on it. It really could have been anything, the point was it was important to her and I thoughtlessly recoreded over it. Oh well, I can always get her some new golf lessons and video them, however the tape is pricless. |

I really really need those recordings. Did you ever transfer them to tape? .wav? <If not, maybe it's time to do it?

I have the tape as well. It has brixton 91 on it along with the letterman, 120 minutes, and dennis miller performances. I was wondering why they didnt play their respected instruments on letterman. Oh yeah, in "Trompe Le Monde" Joey always plays with both hands on the neck during the "of another night..." part because he does finger taping there which makes the rapid notes that you hear during that part. |

This was the NBC Letterman show correct?
the reason would be that back then, the "World's Most Dangerous Band" (Paul Shaffer and the boys) always played with the musical guests. I imagine that Charles thought that it would be overkill to dupicate rhythm instruments so Kim joined in on guitar, and David, well you know, at least they didn't hand him a triangle. |

Will Lee and Sid McGuiness were/are the bassist and guitarist back on NBC and now on CBS. I wished I could have seen that performance. They play re-runs of old Late Night's on Trio.... so maybe I'll get lucky. |

I also have a copy of the tape, that Trompe performance on Letterman is great (especially Paul's organ solo, it's a shame that he didn't play on the album version!) As for the Dennis Miller performances, they were also great, although Dennis Miller is an annoying prick, and Kim's bass was a tad bit out of tune during Bird Dream (I'm not sure if that's the reason she's grimacing during most of the song, and shoots Charles a sheepish grin at the end of it). In any case, she looks great in that purple dress! :) |

I was trying to work out with someone to send me their tape and me send it back but it didn't work out. Are any of you who have this willing to do it? I set up a page on my webspace with a few rare clip of the pixies playing that I captured with my tv card and would love to get the dennis miller and letterman stuff. If you'd be willing to do it me and other fans would love it. If you aren't up for that a copy would be ok but the generation loss would kind of suck. Email me if you're willing to do it.

Body Massage Machine,
I can transfer this tape to DVD if you would like and return it to you with a DVD. At the same time I could make duplicates for any else out there who would like a copy. If anyone else has some rare TV or concert stuff they would like to have transferred to DVD, let me know. I used to have music video show and am in the process of transferring tons a stuff to DVD at the moment. Thanks.
