I want to live in Los Angeles!
Yeah, the one in South California. Well, Culver City to be more specific. Why?
Because it has this museum:
THE MUSEUM OF JURASSIC TECHNOLOGY

BLT, floop, darwin etc.: any of you been there or heard of it?
The museum's philosophy, according to the proprietor, is somewhat like the life cycle of the Cameroonian stink ant. They are floor-dwelling creatures, but sometimes one of the ants will inhale a certain type of fungus spore, begin to act irrationally, climbing up and up until it dies. Then a horn-type fungus grows from its head, and spores errupt out onto the forest floor....
The whole museum is dedicated to oddities and things of wonder, like old superstitions, strange facts of the natural world, or these beautiful little micro-sculptures made out of human hair that you can only see through a microscope. Or real human "horns".

This a a serious road trip find. I like wacky stuff like this. The Corn Palace qualifies too. And Frog in the Sand's Magnetic Hills. Or Holy Island. Or this really neat little pub I visited on the North Sea shore that's carved into a cliff. Wish I could remember the name of that pub or what town it was in.

I hope you can go, if only so I can live vicariously. If you get a chance, try to meet with one of the proprietors, David -he seems like a *really* cool cat. And he plays a mean accordian.

my favorite part of roadtrips is something my friends and i always do. every time we fill up gas or stop for some food, we chip in some $ and buy a cassette from the truck stop store. it has ranged from "wrestlemania the album" to "charlie daniels super hits" to "the monkees live! 1987." after purchasing we have to see how long we can take the $4 tape before giving it a unanimous veto. i have a strong will so it sucks to have me holding out through a 2nd or 3rd listening of "the best of .38 special" but its worth it just to piss off my friends

i used to live 3 blocks from the Museum Of Jurassic Technology. indeed, i've been there. it's one of those rare LA gems that everyone should check out once. it's fucking crazy.
the last time i was there (over a year ago) they said they were doing a major rennovation on the museum, so hopefully it's all up to speed now.

Have barely planned a thing and it's just under 2 months away. I'm kind of enjoying the freedom of it all - leaving the husband behind and running off with my old art school buddy and partner in crime to do the holiday we've been promising each other for years now. |

Jennifer, next time you're in London (ahem), you should visit the Garret museum next to Guy's Hospital. I haven't been, but my brother lives down there and he tell's me there's freaks in jars!

| argh, I lived in LA for seven years and never visited the musuem of jurassic technology. It's a block away from danny's warehouse, where I would go once in a while to stock up on dance clothes. If you visit the museum be sure to eat at Versailles while you're over there on Venice Blvd. Legendarily cheap and plentiful cuban food. |

You're onto something. It is important, but not for the pancakes. I had a revelation about the International House of Pancakes and their restaurant architecture several years ago. I've only told one other person.
I think IHOP is part of an international (surprise surprise) Illuminati-Octopus ring. Think about it...every one of those damn restaurants has these huge A-frame roofs, right? And is there a big cathedral ceiling once you get inside? NO! It's all closed up and normal as you could expect. Once you get in and before you can begin to wonder what they're doing with all that extra space (I mean, you only need so many extra boxes of straws and non-dairy creamer), they ply you with all these different flavors of syrup and mountains of whipped cream til you're so doped up on sugar you can't see straight.
And they have all these foreign names for the items on their menus, like "Belgian Waffles" and "French Toast". Why? I mean, they're not even really imported! I'll tell you why. That's them having a laugh at your ignorance - the Belgian and French Illuminati tentacle delegates are laughing their asses off having a meeting, on Exit 112 outside of Knoxville Tennessee, about ruling the world, right under your nose! Well, over it anyway. No one would ever suspect. Not those church buses full of doddering old people, not the truckers with tunnel-vision coming down off the meth either. I'm telling you, they have their meetings in the ROOF. |

i strongly second Slavish's Versailles recommendation. probably one of my favorite restaurants in LA.
get the garlic roasted chicken, or the pork. oh my lord.. my mouth is watering thinking about it.

there is always a shortage of affordable dance clothes except at danny's, where the leotards are $10 and the tights are something like 3 for $5. the place is INSANE. the owner buys up surplus, and he can't seem to stop. he wouldn't sell that inventory if he had three lifetimes.
oh yeah, also if you want cheap, cheap, cheap, good lunch and you don't mind eating from styrofoam trays amidst overflowing trashcans and the humm of passing by motor vehicles, check out India Sweets and Spices. Man, can you believe I now live in New York and I miss the food in L.A.? That city is way underrated as a food city. |
