Just curious for those of you that record your own shows (or even others' shows), what method would you prefer?
We have a show tomorrow and we could either attempt a direct soundboard recording (we tried this once and it was a dismal failure) or with a stereo mic of some sort just laying on a table or taped to a wall.
Our bassist has a mini-disc recorder and we have a show tomorrow that I'd like to get a good recording of. Up until now he's been recording through his headphones (which, though better sounding than I would've thought, is still pretty awful).
Comments? Experience? Etc?

What I just did last weekend (for a practice, not a gig, so may not be as usable) was use my Tascam 8-track analog multi-track recorder. It can only record 4 tracks at a time, so we miced the drums, guitar, bass, and vocals on separate tracks. That way I didn't have to be so finicky at the time about getting proper levels for recording, because I could always adjust them after the fact. I thought it turned out really well.
I've used the one central mic method a few times, and am just not happy with it.
So, if you could get your hands on a multi-track recorder, and somehow run that into the mini-disc recorder, either at the time, or at a later time...maybe that would work well.
I dunno.

Well, I have a 424, so that would be possible, but I don't think I could mic up everything for the live show especially since it will likely already be mic'd to the soundboard. But definitely having a multi-track recording to mix later would be preferable to a live-to-two, it's just not feasible.

Hmmmm....
If you used extra mics, and kept the recording unit completely separate of the mixing system, wouldn't you be able to mic the instruments/amps just for the recording unit, and adjust the levels however you wanted? Maybe put a recording mic on the monitors to get the vocals or something?

I just liked the way it turned out for us....
Actually, we ran out of the mixer, into the recorder, so we had it mixed well going into the recorder too.
We had a lot of time to fiddle with it though, it being a practice.

Yeah, that's what my concern is, we're not going to have time nor ambition to get it all set up for something like that. Unless someone has a better idea, I think I'll just rent a stereo-mic so we're not recording through his earbuds when we go to rent a few other pieces of equipment we'll be needing.

what i'd do is take lines from your desks outputs into the inputs of mini-disc recorder and that means the mix your getting live is recorded on to the mini disc,as long as you get a decent recording level on the mini disc it should be quite good quality.
