Ok, I'm not really sure what I think so far except that I think the Beatles influence is showing more on this album than ever and a lot of it is just plain haunting(maybe just because of his death). There's a part in "Kings Crossing" where he sings the line "Give me one good reason not to do it." and a barely audible voice responds "Because we love you." I'd heard a lot of these songs in live acoustic versions and so far they just aren't holding up with the full arrangements he has on this album, but then again it might just be a grower, I know I'm going to be listening to it for awhile anyway. So anyone else have any thoughts?

I think Elliott Smith is a 'grower artist' if there is such a term. The Henry Fonda Theater acoustic shows do show the songs in a more intimate, person and fragile way but I'm sure even though FABOTH wasn't finished at the time of his death, production was carried out based on notes and prodution ideas Elliott left behind and are as Elliott Intended.
There is a fantastic show that I have recorded at the Black Cat in 97 and that shows a lot of the Either/Or tracks in a alternative way. I think the first way in which you hear Elliott's (any many artists) songs you like you warm too and it becomes hard to hear them in any other light.
I think the album is more like Big Star with Mem lane, Fond Farewell, Lets Get Lost, Somebodys baby. |

I like the album, but it's more ''normal'' than I expected being used to either/or and roman candle

It's a natural progression from XO to Figure 8 I think, Almost a mixture of both. |

I'd agree with that zfast. It's also a much punchier album everything is more out front and less subtle than things seemed on XO. Then again with each listen I'm noticing more things with this album. It is much noisier than you'd expect I think, or at least that was my first impression. I don't understand what you mean by "normal" though billgoodman, it seems pretty idiosynchratic to me, think I fucked up that word, especially the juxtaposition of the really soft acoustic songs to some of the louder ones.

normal well the songs aren't normal you know as in bad they are great but to me some of the soundeffects and the way that it's recorded are more normal than roman candle and either/or it's all prety hi-fi you see
to make myself clear: I don't think the songs are normal or too normal or the lyrics or the chordprogession
but just the way it was recorded it's almost pop
normal and pop are good things I'm not against it hell no

I just ordered a copy, and I'm so looking forward to it. I lurve all his other albums, and seems like this one won't be a disappointment.

I think that this album is pretty good, but have only listened to it once or twice. Elliott is definately like FB in the way that you'll never get his albums on a first time listen.. Was listening to Figure 8 last night (this is the album that got me into ES), superb album!
This is a high class bureau de change, not some Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Margate! |

I've listened to it quite a lot now, and I'm happy to say this is a beautiful album. I just love 'Kings Crossing', the melody combined with the words is just brilliant.

If he was alive to make more albums, this would've been viewed as "transitional". He seems to be trying new things and avoiding his songwriting habits, but overall it's pretty lackluster compared to his other albums. I also think a lot of the tracks would've been B-sided if he hadn't died.

i don't think the album is perfect, but some of the tracks are. i think some are among his all-time best in fact. A Fond Farewell, A Distorted Reality, in particular
i also really like Memory Lane, Kings Crossing, Shooting Star, Twilight..
i think this album is better than "X/O"

I was completely apprehensive when I heard about this album, Having been (still am) a big Elliott Smith fan, I couldn't imagine how they could complete the album without him, but I was completely and pleasantly surprised. A Fond Farewell, and A Distorted Reality are just brilliantly written. His ability to paint pictures of emotion just blow me away. |

I like Elliot's stuff...like almost every band I dig, i found it too late. I had heard several tunes played on the iTunes radio station I listen to and the night they found him post-suicide, the radio station played all of his released stuff. tough to listen to at the time but good, lasting tunes... |

I've been trying to read as many articles as I can about his death and this one really spooks me. I don't know why I read these articles because it just makes me want to go get as fucked up as I possibly can and kill myself.
I guess no one started a RIP Elliot Smith topic? I searched RIP and R.I.P. and Elliot Smith and didn't find one.
I miss the guy.

Wow LBF that last line gave me chills.
I am always a little skeptical of those kind of things, but to me I am convinced the girl friend killed him in a fit of rage. She produced that "sucide note" from some other sorry note he wrote her at some time.
What makes me so convinced, if you are going to kill yourself like that, you would take your shirt off. The defensive marks on the wrists also are prof of this.
Also the fact he was off illegal drugs and had something he was looking forward towards helping-- his charity for abused kids.
I know nothing of the gf, but it really sounds like she did it. The fact that she refused to talk to authorties and lied on MTV that the parents sided w/ her when she didn't. Sounds like from this article she was a publicity crazed musician and Smith was in her eyes holding her back.
Very sad story. Almost wish I hadn't read it to know that he was probably sadder than his songs. Very sad. |

I think I started an article when he died but it was just called Elliott Smith, could be wrong though. I tend to think that his girlfriend killed him, but it doesn't matter in the end I guess. Irregardless I have a couple full length movies of concerts if anyone wants to check them out they're really good just look me up on soulseek.

"In a way, you cannot really blame them for believing that Smith is trying to reach them in death: intimate, wracked with sorrow and personal details, his music certainly tried to reach people when he was alive. The website's news pages report that Smith's family will release his final album later this year. One of its tracks is called See You In Heaven."

I'm pretty sure there was a thread at the time of his death, in the vein of 'is this for real?' That was a weird time.
